That s the best 22 game start to a seaosn in progrma history, eclipsing the 20-1 run to open the 2009-10 campaign. - It was another terrific effort in Thursday night s win by National Player of the Year candidate Jalen Brunson. The product of Lincolnshire, Ill., notched 17 first half points depsite being hounded by 2017 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Khyri Thomas. In the second half Brunson s presence helped spring his teammates for open looks. The Wildcats matched a program record set earlier this season at Saint Joseph s by draining 19 3-pointers including two or more by six different players. All five Wildcats starters finished the night in double figures, led by redshirt junior Mikal Bridges with 21 points. National player of the year candidate Jalen Brunson added 19 points while Donte DiVincenzo contributed 17 points. Yet it was the Wildcats primary bench players, freshmen reserves Collin Gillespie and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree who impacted the game in an important way. Gillespie came off the bench to add eight points and five assists in 23 minutes. Cosby-Roundtree added six points and six rebounds in 14 minutes. Toss in a 14 point effort from redshirt freshman Omari Spellman and it was a good night for Villanova s newest Wildcats. I thought our three freshmen really helped us, stated VU head coach Jay Wright. Every game we can play without Phil Booth and those three freshmen play, is going to help us down the road. I was really pleased with all three of our freshmen. When Collin came into the game in the first half, he really sparked us. He got people shots, he took a charge. They are really intelligent offensively. They get mismatches and go at him. I thought he defended his man well and that really inspired our guys. Marcus Foster led Creighton with 20 points. That s an incredibly explosive offensive team, stated VU head coach Jay Wright. Our league is so good offensively. You look at a (Creighton) team that shot 49 percent and 33 percent from three and you feel like you did a pretty good job. We need to keep getting better defensively. Two of the BIG EAST s most polished offensive teams flashed their skill in the game s first nine minutes. The Wildcats drained four 3-pointers including the 7,000th in program history by Bridges while Creighton dropped in a pair to forge an 18-18 tie after 9:13 of action in South Philadelphia. A 10-4 spurt helped build a 28-22 lead for Villanova and one of its architects was Gillespie. The native of Huntingdon, Pa., found a cutting Brunson for a bucket and then fed a sharp pass to Cosby-Roundtree for a pair of assists. Then he NEWS AND NOTES sank a 3-pointer as the shot clock was winding down and promptly drew a charge at the defensive end to give VU its six point edge with just under seven minutes to play in the first half. Gillespie s ball movement helped to push that run to 22-4 before the Bluejays struck back with 10-0 run to shave the deficit to 40-30. But VU ended the period on a surge and took a 49-34 lead into the locker room at the half. The offensive firepower of both units was evident in the early stages of the second half. Creighton connected on 6-of-10 of its field goal attempts over the first 8:22 of the period and added five free throws to that mix. But Villanova kept its margin through its own skill in front of the basket and held a 73-54 advantage. DiVincenzo led the second half wave along with Spellman. VU dropped in nine 3-pointers in the second stanza after dropping in 10 over the first 20 minutes. It all added up to a 98-78 triumph with the final Villanova points of the night scored by walk-on Matt Kennedy. The 2017-18 Villanova Basketball season is prevented by KeyBank. Must See JB As Villanova heads deeper into the month of February, it is clear that junior guard Jalen Brunson has established himself as a major contender for national player of the year honors. Stated Creighton coach Greg McDermott: Jalen Brunson, I think is getting more national attention and if I was in the NBA I would certainly want him on my team. He impacts winning in so many ways. If you need him to score he scores, if you need him to distribute he distributes, he s got toughness, he s got moxie and his leadership skills are just off the charts. That offense with the ball in his hands is truly hard to guard. CBS Sports contributor Jon Rothstein noted on Twitter: Jalen Brunson is a computer generated PG. No flaws and no emotion. Just one turnover in 34 minutes at Marquette. National Player of the Year candidate. In November, Brunson earned the Most Valuable Player honor at the Battle 4 Atlantis. He is included on the Midseason Top 25 Wooden Award Watch List and the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List. The junior ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in scoring at 19.4 ppg; third in assists (4.9 apg); fifth in field goal percentage (.558); second in 3-point FG percentage (.489) and first in assist-to-turnover ratio (#.2).

Triples Talley Of the 1348 field goals attempted this season by Villanova, 624 have been from beyond the 3-point arc. That s a bit more than 46 percent. In the win over Creighton, Villanova s first 10 attempts from the field were from distance. It was definitely not the plan, stated Wright upon being informed of that fact by the Philadelphia Inquirer s Joe Juliano after Thursday night s game. We have good shooters. We want our guys to shoot them. I don t think we took bad shots but we do have to mix it up. The results from deep though have been some of the best in program history. After convertaing 8-of-24 in Sunday s win at Marquette, VU bounced back to drop in 19-of-39 (.439) against Creighton. The Wildcats have drained 12 or more 3-pointers in 10 of their last 12 outings, a run that begin in a win at Temple on Dec. 13. Away From Home With the Finneran Pavilion currently undergoing a renovation, the Wildcats have grown used to being away from campus. This marks Game No. 23 for the Wildcats and they have been on a home court just eight times. In fact the tidy numbers show the Wildcats are 8-0 at home (1.000); 6-0 on neutral courts (1.000); and 7-1 (.857) as a road team. Building Bridges Villanova s second member of the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 - alongside Brunson - is redshirt junior forward Mikal Bridges. The versatility of the product of Malvern, Pa., was on display against Creighton. He connected on 8-of-14 field goal attempts, handed out four assists and grabbed three rebounds. Bridges is 10th in the BIG EAST in scoring at 16.9 ppg; fourth in blocked shots (1.2 bpg); eighth in 3-point field percentage (.429); and 12th in free throw percentage (.824). Inside the Numbers At 21-1, Virigina and Villanova began the week atop the NCAA in winning percentage (.955). VU also sits atop the kenpom.com advanced metrics rating at +33.55. Its Adjusted Offensive Efficiency ranking also leads the country (129.6 points per 100 possessions). It is hard to imagine that they could be more of perfect offensive team than they were a year ago, but they are, said Creighton coach Greg McDermott. It s like a video game with their offence. Its fun to watch, hard to prepare for, and it s difficult plan to stop. Villanova is No. 2 in the NCAA RPI, trailing only Virginia. It owns nine victories over teams ranked in the RPI Top 100, including Xavier (No. 3); Tennessee (12); Creighton (26); Providence (36); Temple (37); Gonzaga (50); Marquette (55) twice; and UConn (87); NEWS AND NOTES SERIES STUFF vs. Seton Hall Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018/Noon TV: Fox Radio: 610 Sports Radio All-time: VU leads 71-40 Last Meeting: VU 55, SHU 53 (Mar. 10, 2017) Last SHU victory: SHU 69, VU 67 (Mar. 12, 2016) Jay Wright vs. Seton Hall: 18-6 Notes: The Wildcats swept all three meetings in 2016-17, including a 55-53 triumph in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinal that was decided by a Josh Hart basket on the Wildcats final possession... Donte DiVincenzo continued his torrid play against the Red Storm, tying his career high with 25 points. In four career games against St. John s DiVincenzo has averaged 22.3 ppg. Hands Down In the span of just more than seven weks, three different Wildcats suffered fractured bones in a hand. Freshman guard Collin Gillespie injured his left hand in practice prior a 77-68 victory over La Salle on Dec. 10. He missed seven games covering five weeks before returning in an 88-56 win over Georgetown on Jan. 17. Freshman forward Jermaine Samuels scored a season high 11 points in a Dec. 27 win at DePaul but also fractured a bone in his left hand in the second half. Samuels remains sidelined. On Jan. 23, redshirt juniot guard Phil Booth injured his hand. The Baltimore native started all 20 games for the Wildcats prior to his injury, averaging 11.6 points per game. His assists to turnover ratio (64 assists, 26 turnvoers) ranked second in the BIG EAST to his teammate Jalen Brunson. D Tales The Wildcats are 32-1 (.970) when holding opponents to 65 or fewer points since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. They are 8-0 (1.000) in that circumstance to date in 2017-18. Donte D Redshirt sophomore Donte DiVincenzo played starters minutes before moving into the first five after the injury to Phil Booth. In the two games since he has averaged 20.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg.

NEWS AND NOTES It s Worth Noting Since the start of 2013-14, Villanova is 150-18 (.892). In that stretch VU is 71-10 (.877) in BIG EAST Conference regular season play. Villanova is 29-2 (.935) in games in which Donte DiVincenzo scores in double figures over the last two seasons. A total of six student-athletes remain from the 2016 NCAA national championship roster: Phil Booth, Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Tim Delaney, Donte DiVincenzo, and Eric Paschall. Five Straight Big Five Titles Villanova extended its record shattering streak of victories in the Philadelphia Big Five to 22 in 2017-18, posting its fifth consecutive 4-0 campaign against its City Series rivals Penn, La Salle, Saint Joseph s and Temple. Two For Tomorrow A pair of versatile and highly-regarded wing players have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova in the fall of 2018, it was announced on Nov. 10. Brandon Slater, 6-6, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole Swider, 6-8, of Portsmouth, R.I. are set to become Wildcats next fall. As a junior in 2016-17, Slater averaged 15.2 ppg at Paul VI High School, where he played both guard and forward. Slater, who played his summer basketball for Team Takeover, is ranked at No. 70 in ESPN s Top 100 Class of 2018 Prospects. Brandon is a high-character young man from an awesome family, stated Wright. I think he has tremendous potential to become an outstanding Villanova guard. Swider attends St. Andrews School and emerged as one of the nation s top prospects over the last two seasons. As a junior he averaged 26.5 points per game at St. Andrews while displaying exceptional skill from long distance. He was ranked at No. 35 in the ESPN list of Top 100 players in the class of 2018. The passion Cole has for the game fits our culture perfectly, Wright stated. He s a highly skilled player from a great family who understands the game. Finneran Pavilion on the Horizon On Feb. 14, Villanova University s Board of Trustees formally approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion creating a high-quality, gameday experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. The renovation of the Pavilion began in June 2017. Upon its projected reopening in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Progress on the renovation may be tracked for the official web site of the transition, finneranpavilion.com. Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in 2016-17. The Cats posted a lifetime record of 293-62 (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue. In 2017-18, the Wildcats will host 12 games at the Wells Fargo Center, where they are 6-0 thus far.
