Commodore John Hearne The Yacht Club season is in full swing! To prepare for duties as Commodore, I spent time at the San Diego Yacht Club in May and practiced my sailing skills on the II Moro Di Venezia IV (an America's Cup yacht) in San Diego Harbor! So far this spring and early summer, we've had great participation at the Dining Out at Duck Woods Country Club, the Cinco De Mayo and Independence Day parties at the pavilion. We've also enjoyed great turnouts for the model sailboats and the kayak events, with new and returning members. For those few that participated in the Dare Days boating event, we had a great time on a perfect boating weather day. There are still plenty of opportunities to participate in this year's events, so please keep an eye on your emails for upcoming events. Thank you to all that are working hard to make this a fun group. See you on the water and in the neighborhood. John Heame Commodore, Martin's Point Yacht Club 2018

Appetizers were served outside by the fire pit so guests could enjoy the beautiful evening weather. The dinner followed inside in the banquet room. In honor of our 20-year anniversary, a slide show with pictures from over the years was on display. Cinco De Mayo was our first party in the Martin's Point Marina Pavilion. It was well attended and guests enjoyed south of the border favorites in a festive atmosphere. The traditional margaritas, made by our excellent in-house bartenders, were a big hit.
We celebrated our country and our Freedom on Sunday, July 1 st with an Independence Day Fish Fry at the Pavilion. It was a beautiful evening, Stacey's decorations were beautiful as usual and BJ's provided the delicious dinner. Mike Davis made one of his very special artistic cakes for us. Lots of happy people having a good time!
RC Sailing Report: The RC Sailing Demo Day went off as scheduled on Sunday May 20'^. Susan Smith, Scott Starsman, Tim Baker, Mike Davis and I all sailed. Ralph Deger also showed up toward the end and gave it a try. Dave Rhoads was there providing some coaching and Tom Franchi brought his RC Tugboat to perform patrol duties. Conditions were just right for practicing. We did two practice races. I don't remember the finishing order except for the fact that Tim Baker won the second race in a very close finish. This was remarkable for his second time out. Scott Starsman was also in the hunt the whole time and very close at the finish of race two. I'm excited to see that we are going to have some tough competition this season! In recognition of Fathers Day, the next event was delayed and was held on Sunday June 24^ at 2:00P on the Middle Pond. The heat and other factors kept participation down, but it turned out to be a great practice session for Susan Smith and me. It was also a great surprise that we were joined by Vikki Thompson and her son Josh. They brought a very cool new RC sailboat called a Dragon Force 65 that had been given to them as a house warming gift by Vikki's father. Josh joined right in and we soon found that the new boat had some racing potential. Hopefully, the Thompsons will join us in future events. July is clearly the hottest month and I recall that we had to postpone our July event a few times last year until conditions were bearable and there was some wind. It appears that most of us are in agreement to cancel the July date and create a new date in October to fill out our schedule. The overall 2018 Season sailing schedule has been adjusted and is now: July 15 Sailboat Races Middle Pond Is Cancelled August 19 Sailboat Races Middle Pond September 16 Doc Waters Sailboat Championship Middle Pond October date to be confirmed based on sailor feedback All races start at 2:00 PM weather permitting Here is a website with more information about the boats and RC sailing: http://www.rcvachts.com/cr914home.htm Please contact me directly if you would like to give sailing RC boats a try. We have a club boat available. Rob Beadling RBEADL@Gharter.net / 757-342-8051 Josh Thompson (on the right) sailing piloting the Dragon Force 65 (on the left).

Kayaks Barb Withycombe ; Our scheduled June paddle had to be moved to Sun, 24th. It was a beautiful day on the water. We launched from the Marina and paddled thru the canals of Southern Shores. There were 9 of us and it was a very fun and relaxing time w/ friends. Our next one is on July 17th. If you would like more info about this paddle, please email bbwithy@aoi.com. We had a novice join us in June and she did great. No experience needed to enjoy kayaking. Hope to have more of you join our group in future paddles. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is still willing to do safety checks on the kayaks for anyone who is interested. Contact Tim Baker for details.
