Breezes AND Blows Ocean Springs Yacht Club April 2019 100 Front Beach Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564 From the Commodore & the OSYC Board Hello there, Members! Well... it s April and it's already been time to spring forward. We hope that you have been able to include some of the time in your longer hours of daylight enjoying your Club! To start, and I hope that I am the first of many people to wave this particular flag, a huge thank you to everyone who came out to help with the Club Work Party. We needed all the help we could get to spruce up and making things nice for the month of April. Activities at the Club for the month Ocean Springs Ice Breaker Regatta (The event formerly known as Mid- Winters East/North) taking place over the weekend of April 5-7, followed by the 1699 Regatta and our Club's fiftieth (50 th!) anniversary the weekend of April 27, 2019. Please save that date and prepared to come celebrate that weekend; all of the plans are being finalized shortly. We had the back steps re-done this past month so it is a lot safer, and the front steps cleaned and painted with a nonskid surface for safety. There have been several people that almost slipped down the stairs recently; we do not want that to happen to anyone. members weren t there, and both times the guests were not the nicest people in the building. We are going to post the guest policies again; please, and we need your help with this policy which clearly states that the member has to be with the guest, and that all guests have to be checked in and signed in. If the individual is an in town guest, then that person is only allowed to visit the Club with a member two times a month total. The official approved policy per the board is included later in this edition of the newsletter. Please do not hesitate if there are any questions regarding our guest policy, or any other aspects of the Club, and feel free to discuss it with me or any of our board members. Everyone wants to enjoy their own Club, and you as members deserve that respect. Thank you very much - Neal Neal Olive, 2019 Commodore On a serious note, we recently had two issues with guests that said that they were with members, but the 1 of 6

From the Vice Commodore, Joe Pocreva Last month, the voyage of the OSYC left us in the backyard of Dr. Kenny Davidson. Because of storm damage and shallow waters, the OSYC was moved to Point Porteaux in Gulf Hills. With that move, the Club now was a registered Sunfish Fleet, and hosted their very first regatta in the Regional Sunfish Championships in 1970. According to the memoirs of Bache Whitlock, they began looking for a permanent location and considered a number of options, including the end of Lover s Lane and two prospective sites on East Beach. Next month we ll describe early life in the harbor. Until then, Cheers!! Vice Commodore Joe Pocreva Tuesdays are Guys Night @ OSYC Eventually, Harry Rehage leased property to the OSYC inside of the Ocean Springs Harbor. The site was at the end of the northwest branch of the harbor. It was located on La Fontaine Street, just before the left turn as you are leaving the harbor. The original building was washed away, but an addition to the original structure still stands. A member, Matt Grace, produced modular homes out of Bay St. Louis. He was contracted to build a clubhouse on pilings and delivered the OSYC in two halves. Yes, the original building was to be a doublewide. Here s where the story really gets interesting though. The newly arrived doublewide was too big for the crane they planned to use, so the final fabrication had to wait a few days. The Club was negotiating with the city on the details of the installation, and found some resistance to their presence by some of the local homeowners. Imagine their surprise when the unfinished building halves 'exploded into flames and was totally destroyed'. Everyone knew it was arson, but no one was ever identified as the culprit. However, out of the ashes (or from down the coast) rose another doublewide that quickly replaced the original crispy OSYC remnants. Bache described the Club in its new location as topsy, partying and racing every weekend. Drive through the harbor now, and imagine trying to host a crowd every weekend. Wings @ 50 cents each 3:00 PM - close! "Per the Board" New OSYC Guest Policy "Guests may join members up to two times per month, regardless of the member he/she visits with; all guests must be checked in. The only exceptions would be Regattas and [the special] Sunday Brunch. At all times, guest charges will be on a member's account with no exception." 2 of 6

From the Fleet Captain, Jay Williams FleetCaptain@OSYC.com Greetings from your Fleet Captain! Sailing season has started! It s exciting to see a growing number of boats on the beach and sailors taking advantage of the warmer days and spring winds. To kick-off the year OSYC is hosting the Ocean Springs Ice Breaker Regatta on April 5 th, 6 th, & 7 th. This regatta is 3 full days of competitive buoy racing right off the beach. This regatta will be a HCA points event and is open to Hobie one design classes including Waves, H16, H17, H18 and H20s. The attendance for this event is strong every year with national and world class sailors competing. On the evening of April 4 th, we are having a regatta race management seminar from 6-8 pm. Mark Santorelli, a former HCA-NA Race Director, US Sailing Regional Race Officer, and 4-time Hobie 16 National/North American Champion will host the seminar. This is an excellent opportunity to learn what it takes to provide a safe, successful, and fun regatta. Please come join us! Adventure Camp dates (1 week) June 17-21, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM July 8-12, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM We always support and welcome your help and involvement. Everyone should receive an e-mail with the time and cost of the crawfish boil. 1699 Regatta: The 1699 Regatta will be on April 27 th & 28 th this year. In conjunction with that Regatta is the 50 th Anniversary of the Ocean Springs Yacht Club. 50 th ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCEAN SPRINGS YACHT CLUB: We hope everyone will attend the party, which is going to be held on Saturday, April 27, from 6 pm until 10 pm. The cost per person is $15.00 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and under. We will have a band for dancing and a photographer to memorialize the party. I would like to take this opportunity to invite ALL PAST COMMODORES and their significant other to the party, free of charge, as the club s way of saying thank you for all you have done for us. I would also like to invite any spouses of those Commodores who have gone on to the great yacht club in the sky to come and enjoy the party as well, free of charge. We are hoping to set up an e-mail address for members to send their old photos so that we can set up a display of memories of days gone by. We hope to make the party fun for all and hope to see you all there. Please check your e-mails for more information as it comes available. Birthday Party: We are going to start having a monthly birthday party to celebrate members birthdays on the second Saturday of every month after the Saturday evening drawing. I hope everybody can come out and celebrate the April birthdays on Saturday, April 13. Kentucky Derby / Thunderbirds / Cinco de Mayo: The Thunderbirds will be here on Saturday, May 4, so we will not be hosting a formal Kentucky Derby party this year. It is still in the planning stages, but we are considering have a Cinco de Mayo party on Sunday, May 5, instead. The Social Committee will be meeting this month on the 16 th of April at 6:00 pm and thereafter will meet on the first (1st) Tuesday of each month. Everyone is invited to join in.
