Check this out!!!! Yahoooo - After plenty of hard work our club has just received this grant money to purchase 32 jump for joy showjump poles (the ones you don t have to paint) along with putting $600 towards new games equipment. In return we do have to do some in-kind help to match the grant. Like we did once before extremely successfully, we plan on having a working bee day where the kids come along and have a ride, maybe a lesson or 2 and we all paint a few of the older poles and bring them back to life. The last time we did this most of the club turned up, we had around 30 to 35 riders on the day, the kids had cross country lessons and trail rides and we had a BBQ tea and had a great time and all got home around 9pm or 10pm and had a wonderful day. We have even had requests to do this day again, everyone from the youngest children to grandparents got to do some painting on the day and all our dazzle boards came from that day. Let s paint up all our 44 gallon drums in all colours for the games kids and let s repaint some of our old poles and spark everything up for our rallies and events. 3

Hello Pony Clubbers, Wow, what a week of weather. Thank-you to everyone who has contributed to the newsletter this month, it makes for great reading and also getting more information across. Looks like our 3 C certificate riders were extremely lucky last weekend in that it did not rain at all for their important day. A big congratulations to Amy Lodge, Tori Wilson and Mikaela Lawrence who all did a brilliant job completing their C certificates, 6 hours of ridden and horsemanship theory. A big reminder that all our ponies and horses are wet and cold at the moment, make sure you look after them and ensure they are dry and well rugged. When you come to pony club please pay extra attention to making sure they are well warmed up before doing anything. Walk a lap of the trotting track before even thinking about trotting, then trot a lap and then have a canter somewhere if it is safe to do so. Take special care and notice what the ground is like where you are riding and take it careful, don t turn sharp or suddenly and don t take off or stop suddenly. Imagine it is you taking that slippery corner and let your horse take it just as carefully. It is very slippery everywhere. Also, warm down at the end of the day in the same way as warming up, do a lap or 2 of the trotting track at a walk while watching all the parents pack up the showjump equipment. Please remember, all the roads and tracks at pony club will be slippery, please walk your horse. You will see that we received a grant for just over $4000 which is to purchase 32 jump for joy showjump poles and also $600 worth of games equipment. Not to be sneezed at and it is a great result for the club, we all like new equipment around the club. Well done to Jordan Almond, Maddison Lonie, Charlie Gibson and Mikaela Lawrence who recently competed grades 3 and 4 at the Interzone Horse Trials, this is considered a state event and all the kids should be proud of what they achieved and will remember the experience for years to come. Well done from everyone at the club. There has been a few cases of strangles reported around the area recently, please read up on this condition that can impact greatly on your horse and be aware of the warning signs. We did have a member s horse with early signs of this condition and it was treated immediately which no doubt helped achieve a very positive outcome for the horse and family. This family have done the absolute correct thing and treated their horse early and quarantined the horse for around 12 weeks. All is good and we commend them for seeing it early and acting immediately. Please check it out on google. Check this website http://www.cyberhorse.net.au/csl/strangles.htm Once again we have many committed members in the club doing an amazing amount of work in the background to ensure the kids have a great club to be a part of. In the past 6 months the workload is being spread across more people and the outcome of that is that things end up being done better and more efficiently. The more people and families that take on just another small important role, the better it is for our club and kids. If you would like to help with something small and ongoing, please talk with any one of us on committee. Every little bit helps. Look out for the Gymkhana coming up in October, it is a changed and more exciting program this year. Looking forward to Sunday s rally and hoping the weather looks after us for the weekend. Cheers Shane 7

Presidents Report Hi there Pony Clubbers, I trust you are all well and enjoying your last month of winter? What a wet and muddy winter it has been which has made it very difficult to get out and enjoy riding our horses. How fantastic was it to have our last rally at the indoor sheltered from the elements including the bitter wind that was blowing on that day. I always feel very privileged to ride in such a beautiful environment it feels very posh and very European. Well done to our DC for accommodating all riding groups at the indoor arena I m sure it s like running a three ringed circus to fit all groups and keep them involved on the day! If your horses have been standing around in wet/muddy paddocks I strongly suggest applying a water proof seal/dressing to their hooves like Kohnke s Own to prevent water seeping in and causing abscesses. It is also recommended applying this dressing especially after the farrier has trimmed or shod your horse during wet periods particularly around the nail holes. The good news is Spring is just around the corner so now is the time to get yourself and horse fit for riding in the better weather ahead. I m sure we have all been spurred on by our Aussie riders competing at the Olympics although they didn t snag a handful of gold their riding was truly inspirational to watch. Hopefully we may be watching one of our own instructors competing for gold in four years time - we wish Simon all the best for his pursuit for the Olympics and congratulate him on his decision. Looking forward to seeing many new and old faces at our August rally and remember to make sure your membership is fully paid up so you can ride. Don t forget we have our Fair Day Fun Day Gymkhana coming up on Saturday 27 th October so start planning your pair of riders, fancy dress comp etc. now. Perhaps if we all start wishing for better weather we may be lucky at our next rally and Gymkhana the power of positive thinking. Happy riding.. Mary Drendel Out and About, From Sandra Almond Yarrambat Interzone Horse Trials: Maddison Lonie Jordan Almond Mikaela Lawrence Charlie Gibson All our riders did a great job at Yarrambat, Barwon Zone. You all represented Smythesdale in a very professional manner. Well done to you all. C Certificate Congratulations to our 3 members who have just completed, and past, their certificate C ridden and theory. Amy Lodge Tori Wilson Mikaela Lawrence Congratulations from us all. 8

Important Notice! If anyone has a fall from a horse at any of our rallies YOU MUST NOT mount your horse again until you have been cleared by our first aid people PHOTOS & Pictures Website contributions from SPC members are welcome! Send your results and photos to Shane after each event you attend. If you have any photos to update our clubrooms, of you being out and about competing, riding or just at home with your horse - please send the photos in and provide some detail for each graphic - place date people mounts event etc. CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE! Have a look at how it is coming along and please forward any ideas and suggestions for things you would like to see on the website. www.smythesdale.ponyclubvic.org.au NOT COMING TO RALLY? ALWAYS let Shane know if you won t be attending a Rally so he can organise instructors and juggle groups if necessary. Text or Ph Shane 0429 204432 5342 4411 email to ssimpson@netconnect.com.au Remember PACK UP - TIME Everybody to help please It is great to have many hands to get this done asap It would be greatly appreciated if at the end of a Pony Club Rally all parents and children stay behind for a short while to help with the packing up of the equipment. We understand that everyone is keen to get going but if everyone helped out it would only take a few minutes to complete this task and then everyone could go home at a reasonable time. It is not a fun job when it has to be done with only a couple of helpers. This also includes all club members, including Riders. Please pick up all horse manure! Please do not leave early without helping to pack up and clean up something. All members are reminded that it is everyone s responsibility to clean up after their horses. 14

She has been very lucky to obtain accounts with equine merchandise suppliers along the lines of veterinary, western, English, pony club etc. She would like to donate a $25.00 gift certificate to our pony club to use. She hopes that with this our riders would like to come and visit her store. As you would be aware, having the business on her property gives her the opportunity to sell items at a fantastic price as she does not have the overheads like the larger equine equipment suppliers.
