FEDERAL FUNDING FOR SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL 2005-2012 (SAFETEA-LU) Separate Safe Routes to School Program created with $1 billion available for all 50 states. 2012-2015 (MAP-21) SRTS program folded into Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) with several other programs. 2016-present (FAST) TAP folded into Surface Transportation Program as a Set- Aside Block Grant. SRTS remains eligible funding category.

STATE & LOCAL FUNDING FOR SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL Most states allocate SRTS through federal funding (now the Surface Transportation Block Grants). Some states like California supplement federal funding with state transportation funding. Some MPOs (i.e. MTC) have created regional SRTS funding programs Many local communities fund SRTS through municipal funding sources (i.e. transportation funding, sales taxes, school bonds, etc.)
