WELCOME! Welcme t NJTL! It s great t have yu n the team. NJTL is a place yu can make many new friends and have lts f fun learning t play the exciting sprt f tennis. NJTL was funded in 1969 by tennis champin and humanitarian Arthur Ashe wh wanted t prvide a place fr children t play tennis but als t learn life skills and t build character. The First Serve Life Skills Curriculum will help yu achieve n the tennis curt, at hme, and in the classrm. As yu learn t play tennis, yu ll practice many physical skills like yur frehand, backhand, serve, and vlley, which all help yu win pints n the curt. Yu ll als learn the rules f tennis, hw t keep scre, and hw t play in turnaments. At the same time, yu ll be learning life skills that give yu pwer ff the curt skills like teamwrk, psitive thinking, and hw t achieve gals yu really want in life. Once yu ve mastered these skills, yu ll be n yur way t d better in schl, be a mre valuable member f yur cmmunity, and, as yu get lder, find a jb r g t cllege. Match: Made up f at least tw sets, which in turn are made up f at least six games each. Sme turnament matches require 2 ut f 3 sets t win; thers require 3 ut f 5 sets t win. Net: The net that runs between the tw halves f the curt. Out: A ball landing utside the lines. Overhead: A strke used by players when the ball is high ver their head. Rally: When players hit the ball back and frth ver the net successfully. Receiver: The player wh must hit back (return) the ball after it has been served. Return: A tennis sht that returns the ball t the ther player wh has just served. Serve r service: The beginning sht f every pint in tennis. The persn serving must hit frm a particular place (behind the baseline) diagnally t a particular place n the ppsite curt (within the ppsite service bx). Server: The persn serving the ball. Service bx: The fur sides f the service bx are defined by the side line, the center line, the net, and the service line. Set: Made up f at least six games. It takes 2 t 5 sets t win a match. Singles: A game played by tw players, ne n either side f the net. In singles, the curt is 27 feet wide. Vlley: A strke hit by the player befre the ball tuches the grund. Baseline: The line at the end f a tennis curt. Break f serve: Where the serving player lses the game. Deuce: The scre in a game where bth players are tied, with 40 pints apiece. Duble fault: When the serving player misses bth the first and secnd serves and lses the pint. Dubles: A game with fur players n the curt, tw n each team. Drp sht: A sht where the ball stps very quickly and hardly bunces. Fault: A serve that lands utside the crrect service bx. Fllw-thrugh: Where a player cntinues t swing the racket in the directin f the strke after the ball has been hit. (Gd fllw-thrugh affects the length, directin, and speed f the ball.)
