EXECUTIVE SUMMARY MARINE AGGREGATE DREDGER (MAD) 5600
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Damen offers a range of trailing suction hopper dredgers, dedicated for aggregate dredging. The innovative standard designs are future proof, well-suited for offshore aggregate dredging and can be customized with a large number of standardized options. The complete concept has been designed to dredge sand and gravel efficiently for the lowest cost per ton.

INNOVATIVE HULL DESIGN The hull has been designed to optimize seakeeping behavior, minimize trim sensitivity and reduce resistance as much as possible. In the overall design process the hydrodynamic parameters and hull shape were leading in many design considerations. This innovative approach resulted in a bow that easily pierces through waves reducing bow slamming and minimizing green water ingress. Furthermore, the vessel does not require a ballast system because of its trim neutral characteristics.
DAMEN DREDGING SYSTEM The entire dredging system is designed and built by Damen. During the complete design process there is a focus on efficiency, wear resistance and practical maintenance for maximizing uptime. The drag head is of a modern short and wide design to optimize flow and efficiency. The latest CFD software is used to validate the design. The in-house designed submersible dredge pump is directly driven by a 1.600 kw electrical motor. The Damen dredge pumps are specifically designed for pumping highly abrasive mixtures of water and solids. The heavy-duty dredge pump is of the single inlet, single stage centrifugal type with an axial inlet and a tangential outlet.
EFFICIENT POWER TRAIN An efficient power train is provided by a hybrid solution. The controllable pitch propellers are directly driven through two medium speed engines. All other heavy consumers are electrically driven from a 690V main switchboard. During regular operations, the complete vessel is powered by the two main engines. This reliable system is the perfect trade-off between efficiency and maintainability.
SCREENING TOWERS The dredged material can be classified on board by sieving, delivering only the desired grain size into the hopper. Two rotating screening towers are located on port side of the vessel. The towers can be rotated by a slewing bearing to evenly spread the material within the hopper space. Built of Hardox construction material and with a large screening area, these screening towers ensure efficient material classification with minimum wear. The design and manufacturing of the screening towers is done in-house. Feedback from operators, as well as experiences from Damen Shiprepair, are incorporated in the design.
DRY UNLOADING SYSTEM As the cargo is dewatered onboard and the dry unloading system can deliver sand and gravel to shore via its conveyer belt system, the vessel can operate autonomously without requiring shore facilities. Type Make Capacity self-driving unloader with clamshell grab Coops & Nieborg 1500m 3 /hr of dewatered cargo Shore conveyor boom length 27m with a radius of 270 Standard reach 7m outside hull at SB, 25m outside hull at PS The dry unloading system can be operated fully automatic, semi automatic or manually.
MODERN AND COMFORTABLE INTERIOR The interior strives for maximum comfort by using modern and durable materials, balanced colors and minimizing sound levels. The standard design complies with the Maritime Labour Convention by having single cabins, and separate mess- and dayrooms. Furthermore, the vessel is provided with a laundry room, change room, conference room, office and gymnasium. Upon client request we are flexible in the arrangement of certain spaces and their purpose. Our philosophy is that crew comfort is essential to safeguard their well-being, and also enable the crew to operate and maintain the vessel excellently.
