SPORTS LESSON PLAN TITLE/AIM: Help students identify sports with the season the sport is played. LEVEL: Intermediate OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to describe favorite sports. MATERIALS: Pictures of sports and seasons, individual sheets with list of seasons VOCABULARY: Choose sports from the following list. Do NOT attempt to teach all of them. You may ask class to name their favorite sports and teach the lesson from that list or select sports that you will be playing during camp. Be sure you have sports that are played during different seasons. basketball tennis sledding baseball dancing skating bowling boxing biking golf gymnastics volleyball soccer/football American football ice hokey badminton Ping-Pong/table tennis jogging skiing hiking sledding biking snowboarding swimming track and field karate/martial arts archery yoga/tai chi PROCEDURES Lesson 1 INTRODUCTION: Show pictures of sports (try to select pictures of those sports that you are going to use in the lesson). Sport pages from American newspaper, pictures of famous players (NBA). NBA Playoffs, NFL Playoffs, etc. TEACH AND MODEL: Review sports vocabulary. Have words on the board or pasted around the room. Call out each word and have them repeat. Ask if they know the word. Then ask one student to say what it means. Help if necessary. Have students act out a sport and the class guesses. Explain a sport while you act it out. For example, this sport is played on a field, with a home plate and 3 bases at the corners of a diamond, and a pitcher s mound in the center. The pitcher throws the ball from the pitcher s mound over home plate. (Demonstrate). The batter stands beside home plate and swings the bat at the ball, and hits the ball (demonstrate. The Fielder catches the ball, and throws it to first base (demonstrate), while the batter runs to first base (demonstrate). The First Baseman catches the ball, keeping a foot on first base to get the runner out (demonstrate). The next batter waits for the pitch, swings bit, and hits the ball over the wall for a home run! (Demonstrate). The batter runs around the bases while the crowd cheers! (Demonstrate).
PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT: in pairs have them come up with a description of three sports. They are to write the explanation without the name of the sport. Then have them share with the class and guess the sport. Lesson 2 TEACHER INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Using the pictures talk about the season the sport is played. (You will be reviewing the four seasons, Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.) Put the seasons on the board and put the picture of the sport played during that season under the name of the season. GUIDED PRACTICE: Take all the pictures down but leave seasons up with name and pictures if you have some. Calling on the students, ask them to come to the front and place the picture under the correct season. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Divide students into pairs or small groups. Give each group a sheet with the four seasons. Have the students list all the sports they know that are played in that season. Part 2 TEACHER INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Write these sentences on the board. Using pictures, tell what your favorite sport is for the various season. My favorite FALL sport is. My favorite WINTER sport is. My favorite SPRING sport is. My favorite SUMMER sport is. GUIDED PRACTICE: Have assistants complete the sentences and tell why. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: In groups students finish the sentences going around the group. Have them try to tell why they like that sport. OR A student describes his favorite FALL sport and the group has to guess the sport. Move from season to season around the group with students describing their favorite sport for that season and the other members of the group guessing the sport.

One team is up and the other outfield at the bases and a few out field. The rest of the class watches for demonstration purposes. The first batter tosses a whiffle ball (or foam ball, rolled up sock) a pretend hit and runs to first base while the outfield team tries to make the out. This is to clarify the game and rules before they are spread out on a field. Go outside and play a game. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES Ranking Sports: List 10 sports on the board. Rank the sports in order of your favorite to least favorite. Ask the students to name 10 sports. Read through the list of the names of the sports together. Have a student come to the front of the room and rank the list from their favorite to their least favorite. Have another student rank the same sports by the number of players required for a team - most players to least players. Using the same list of sports, divide the students into groups and as a group, have one group rank the sports from favorite to least favorite, another group - most people to least people, another group - hardest to easiest, another group - most popular to least popular, etc. When they are finished, share with the class how they have categorized the sports. Teamwork maze: Part of being a team is team work. Now you will work on that. Divide into teams of 4. They will choose a name, sporty nicknames for each. Need to intro their team and why we should cheer for them. Make maze. Each team has maze walker, a person who can only say, turn right, one who says, turn left, and one who says, go straight. At first, one team at a time, blindfold the walker and see if they can direct him through. Then do all teams at once.
