THE SHOOTAROUND UTA continues its season opening stretch of 3 games in 5 days when it hosts Oral Roberts on Monday night at College Park Center. The matchup is the 1st between the programs since 2012. The Lady Mavs are 3-7 against ORU and 1-2 at home. The Lady Mavs opened the campaign with a 61-48 win over Incarnate Word on Saturday as part of UTA s Homecoming doubleheader. UTA outscored the Cardinals 20-12 in the 4th. Rebekah VanDijk led UTA with 11 points and 9 rebounds, she was the lone player in the game in double figures. The Lady Mavs were picked No. 1 in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, while Rebekah VanDijk was named the Preseason Player of the Year for the 2nd year in a row. VanDijk joined Cierra Johnson as 1st-team selections, while Crystal Allen was a 3rd-team selection. VanDijk enters her senior season in search of several all-time records. The 2016-17 1st-Team All- SBC member is within reach of becoming the 1st player in Lady Mav history to record both 1,000 pts and 1,000 rebounds, she needs just 144 rebounds to achieve the feat. She is also approaching Lori Cottington s all-time rebound record of 1,078. VanDijk s 1,249 points (8th all-time) are 502 short of tying Terra Wallace s all-time mark. Her 144 blocks are 3rd in program history, trailing Tanya Strong (166) and Linda Wright (242). Johnson, the 2016-17 SBC Defensive Player of the Year, has 248 career steals, needing just 37 to tie Allison Gray s all-time mark of 285. She is also 116 points away from becoming the 19th member of UTA s 1,000-pt club. Allen shattered the single-season 3-point percentage mark in 2016-17, knocking down 46.9%. The Lady Mavs took a preseason foreign tour in prep of the campaign. UTA went to Costa Rica for an 8-day, 4-game trek that saw UTA play a pair against both the Univ. of Ottawa and the CR National Team. UTA welcomes 6 that will take the court for the first time this season. New Mexico JC transfers Laurynn McGowen and Daiane Machado join Brooke Alexander (RS SO), Jennifer Parker (FR), Kelsey Johnson (RS FR) and Michaela Wright (FR). Alexander joined from Liberty University, while Johnson was out with an injury last season. Alexander, Parker, Johnson and McGowen debuted against UIW on Saturday. Looking ahead, the Lady Mavs stay at CPC with a matchup vs. Oral Roberts on Monday night. Oral Roberts leads the all-time series 7-3 with the last meeting taking place in 2012. In nonconference UTA has home matchups vs. SMU, Fresno State, Houston and San Francisco, while UTA visits UTSA, Utah, Kansas State, Georgia Tech and Arkansas. UTA COACH KRISTA GERLICH Krista Gerlich has guided a resurgence for the Lady Mavericks since being named head coach on April 11, 2013. From her first season into the second, the Lady Mavs increased their win total by 14, the second largest turnaround in Division I between the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. She guided UTA into the postseason in 2016-17 as UTA went to the WNIT. Prior to UTA, Gerlich was a standout coach at West Texas A&M, making 4 NCAA DII Tournaments and won 3 conference titles. In her playing career, Gerlich was a national champion at Texas Tech in 1993 and a part of 2 Southwest Conference titles. She finished as the all-time leader in 3-pointers (220) and still ranks amongst the top of Texas Tech 3-point and assist leaders. She was inducted in to the SWC Hall of Fame in 2004. 2017-18 SUN BELT STANDINGS LSC SOUTH DIVISION COACH OF THE YEAR AWARDS (2006-07, 2009-10) YEAR RECORD 2006-07 28-5 2007-08 26-5 2008-09 28-6 2009-10 30-4 2010-11 17-11 2011-12 19-10 226 CAREER WINS 4 NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) 3 LSC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2008, 2009, 2010) YEAR RECORD 2012-13 20-12 2013-14 4-25 2014-15 17-13 2015-16 15-16 2016-17 22-9 2017-18 1-0 SCHOOL CONFERENCE CONF. The arena features 4,055 lower bowl seats, in addition to a 2,800-square-foot hospitality suite. A distinctive feature is a centerhung 4-sided Daktronics LED scoreboard with an additional end zone LED display, ribbon displays and scorer s table. The lower concourse contains sports medicine facilities, two full-sized practice courts, a 2,500-sqft weight room, a press center, an academic support study center and coaches office suites. In addition to Mavericks basketball and volleyball events, the facility hosts a variety of concerts, speaking engagements and other events.
