U.S. OPEN PICKLERS Page 1 Later this month a lot of Palatine Picklers will be headed to Naples, FL to play in the largest pickleball tournament on Earth. Others are going down to support them. In alphabetical order here are those I know are going. Apologies to those I ve missed. Picklers who are attending but not playing are in italics. Bear Shatwell, Bill Myers, Chuck Feinstein, Dana Joseph, Don Kaplan, Gail Rohlfing, Greg Woodsum, Holly Goldsmith, Howard Weisbart, Jose Sosa, Kathy McWhorter, Larry Goldsmith, Laurie Jones, Linda Mihel, Lynn Weisbart, Melody Woodsum, Patty Eagleton, Peggy Whitlow, Sol Shatz, Stan Jones, Sue Shatz, Susie Layton, Terry Layton, Thea Froehling, Tim Mottl, and Trevor Weisbart. Next month s newsletter will surely have considerable coverage of this gathering of some 1600 players from around the world. NAPLES, FL PICKLEBALL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD Knowing I would soon be playing in the U.S. Open, Holly Goldsmith gave me this link for the story behind this event landing in Naples. I thought, Great. Then I saw it was 14 minutes. I thought, Great. Then I watched it. Yeah, GREAT. See for yourself http://www.pickleballchannel.com/iheartpickleball_naples You ll be glad you did.-. OUR 2018 SPRING-FALL OUTDOOR SCHEDULE Page 5 Here are the times regular times Picklers will hit the courts at Sycamore and Locust courts. There is no official starting date. If the weather seems to your liking, just show up. Surely others will be of like mind. Over the years Sycamore has been our primary venueand the one preferred for recreational play. It has the benefits of a drinking fountain and a PortaPotty. Stronger (upper intermediate and above) Picklers traditionally gravitate to Locust. There will be balls in the bin by Sycamore courts. Small donations may be put in the Crown Royal bag that hangs from my chair when needed. At Locust you supply your own balls. Whichever court you attend, be sure to bring a chair and a beverage. Sunscreen is a good idea too. MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY 8:30-Noon 4:00-6:30 8:30-10:30 Noon-3:00 8:30-Noon Noon-3:00 4:00-6:30 10:30-Noon.. Mentoring Session Each venue features two pickleball-specific courts and one tennis court with yellow lines for pickleball. These are our set times. Groups of Picklers have always added their own, additional times to meet and play. Holly Goldsmith and Sue Cameron teamed up again. This time they captured Silver in the 3.5 ladies division at the Pekin Spring Swing tournament.. Bill Terri 2-legged Steve Thea

AND AN AGING KING If you re a guy and at least 65, be among the first eight to reply, and you ll compete for King of the Court. This one will take place at Canlan on Thursday, May 24 th at 9:30.. Whether beginner or just one who wants a little drilling to sharpen his/her game, all Palatine Picklers are welcome in this free program. Those who would like to help others develop or refine their skills, please let me know. Last summer our regular Mentors were Mike O Connor, Glen Woodsum, Melody Woodsum, Dennis Bourgoin, Liz Berry, and me (Bear Shatwell). I hope to welcome all back again this summer and more to our coaching staff. If we get more Mentors, I can create a rotating schedule for those of us who would appreciate an occasional week off. This is a great way to give back to the sport that s given you so much joy and satisfaction. CURIOUS AS TO HOW MANY PICKLERS ARE PICTURED IN APRIL? I was so I tallied the results. 139 Palatine Picklers appear within the 152 photos in this month s newsletter. Both those numbers set records, edging the December issue. HOWEVER, this won t be the norm. Thanks to volunteers, I ve had a little more time to spend on the newsletter this month, but I ll be gone for nine days later this month so think of this month s excess as making up for next month s shortage of Pickler pics.

Page 13. Lee Lynne Becky Geri. Peter Joan Ken Dennis PALATINE PARK DISTRICT PICKLERS NEED TO ATTEND On Tuesday, April 17 th, we need a presence at a PPD meeting. It s at the Community Center on Wood Street, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. It will include consideration of constructing pickleball courts at the Hamilton Reservoir east of Smith Street, between Dundee Road and Northwest Highway. Needless to say, we NEED a lot more, local courts so PLEASE show up for this meeting. The PPD is looking for resident input. Hopefully, we can celebrate at Emmett s after this meeting. STILL ROOM FOR MORE AT DINK FOR HOPE TOURNEY Find a partner (3.0 to 4.5+ men s, women s, or mixed) and get in this charity tournament. It s on Saturday & Sunday, April 14 th and 15 th in Wheeling.
