DOGS HEAD TO JAX STATE FOR MIDWEEK MATCHUP The Samford University softball team will take its three-game winning streak on the road Thursday as the Bulldogs square off against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a midweek Ohio Valley Conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m., at University Field. The contest will be the deciding factor of an annual three-game series between the in-state rivals. The yearly competition between the teams typically features two games played at the home field of one team, followed by a final game taking place at the other team's home stadium. Earlier this season, they split a doubleheader held at Bulldog Field. On March 23 in Birmingham, Ala., Samford (17-34, 7-12 OVC) posted a hard-fought 1-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader before Jacksonville State (34-12, 14-5 OVC) rallied for a 5-0 win in the nightcap. The win was the Bulldogs' first conference victory of the season, while the Gamecocks' loss was their first OVC defeat of the year. Samford heads into Thursday's rubber game riding the positive momentum of a three-game winning streak. Over the weekend, the Bulldogs hosted second-place Southeast Missouri in OVC play and earned their first three-game sweep of the 2006 season. In game one, Samford's Stephanie Royall hurled the first no-hitter of her career in a 1-0 victory. In game one, Samford (17-34, 7-12 OVC) used a stellar pitching performance from Stephanie Royall and a two-run homer from Shelley Stanley to defeat the Redhawks. In the second game, the teams needed 10 innings before the Bulldogs used a suicide squeeze bunt from Rachael Reeves to score Jenna Dempski for the extra-inning win. Earlier in the contest, sophomore Meghan Wagner blasted her first home run of the 2006 season. With its pair of defeats, Southeast Missouri (27-15, 14-6 OVC) suffered its first three-game sweep of the season. The Redhawks entered the weekend as the 21st-ranked team in the nation in batting average (.304), but only tallied eight hits and two runs in three games against Samford. Southeast Missouri was no-hit by Royall on Friday, was held to three hits in game one on Saturday and then totaled five hits in 10 innings in game two. In the bottom of the first inning of game one, Samford received all of the scoring it would need as Stanley drilled a line-drive home run to center field. With Bethany Weisser on first base and two outs, Stanley received the green light on a 3-0 count and hit a laser over the center field fence for her team-leading eighth homer of the season. She is the Bulldogs' all-time home run leader with 23 career round-trippers. Samford's Jeslyn Metcalf, Erin Hall, Stanley and Weisser all went 1-for-3 in game one on Saturday. Southeast Missouri scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as shortstop Megan McDonald singled up the middle to score Katie Otterness from third base. Otterness started off the inning with a double to left center and later moved to third with her first stolen base of the season. The hit was the Redhawks' first of the series. Meyer, a native of Davie, Fla., started in the circle for the Bulldogs in game two and only allowed five hits in 10 innings. She limited the Redhawks to one run on five hits and picked up her third win of the season. OVC PITCHER OF THE WEEK - - STEPHANIE ROYALL, FR. Samford's Stephanie Royall was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week on Monday as she helped guide Samford to a three-game sweep of Southeast Missouri over the weekend. Royall pitched the first no-hitter of her career in a 1-0 victory on Friday and then held Southeast Missouri hitless for the first five innings of her next start on Saturday. She went 10 2/3 innings before allowing a hit and struck out a school record 13 batters in a 2-1 complete-game victory on Saturday. SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT The Samford Sports Information Department is headed up by second-year director Joey Mullins and assistant director Zac Schrieber. Intern Jennifer Reid also plays an instrumental role in the day-to-day operations of the department and handles volleyball, track and field, cross country and both men s and women s tennis. Schrieber serves as the primary contact for men s basketball, women s soccer and softball, while Mullins handles football, women s basketball and baseball. All members of the media working Samford softball games must request credentials from Schrieber. Early requests are helpful, enabling media to receive parking passes prior to the game. A year ago, the Bulldogs finished the season with a total of 32 stolen bases on 44 attempts. Samford s stolen base per game average in 2005 was 0.60. The Bulldogs pair of speedy freshmen, Jessica Owens and Rachel Reeves, currently lead the team with 13 stolen bases apiece, while Erin Hall and Liz Pearse are tied for third place with eight each. On March 26, Samford set a schoolrecord with seven stolen bases in a single game against Tennessee State. STANLEY BECOMES SAMFORD S ALL-TIME HR LEADER Shelley Stanley, Samford s junior slugger from Decatur, Ala., became the school's all-time home run leader on April 15, as she hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning against Austin Peay. With the homer, she surpassed former Bulldog-great Angela Bednark for the top spot on Samford s all-time list with 22 career home runs. Stanley has already hit eight home runs this season and is only one deep fly short of tying the Bulldogs all-time single-season mark. She now has 23 in her career. SAMFORD IN THE CONFERENCE RANKINGS As a team, Samford is ranked seventh in the OVC in team pitching with a 2.76 earned run average. The Bulldogs freshman pitcher Stephanie Royall currently leads the team with a 1.99 ERA and has been a workhorse for Samford this season. She is ranked first in the conference in appearances (40) and is third in innings pitched (172.2). Royall is also third in shutouts (6) and is ranked fourth in both complete games (16) and games started (23). She also comes in as the seventh-ranked player in the conference in both ERA (1.99) and strikeouts (125), and is No. 10 in opponent s batting average (.234). Offensively, junior Shelley Stanley is tied for sixth place in the conference in home runs with eight, and is ranked seventh in the OVC in walks (18). KETCHAM ONE VICTORY SHY OF 100-WIN MILESTONE Samford s head coach Beanie Ketcham is one victory shy of reaching the 100-win plateau in her career. Ketcham, the all-time winningest coach in school history, is in her fourth season at Samford and owns a 99-110-1 record. With her next win, she will be the first Samford coach to reach 100 victories.
