HUNTERS & JUMPERS JUMPING IN EXERCISE & SCHOOLING AREAS JANUARY 2019 1

SCHOOLING AREA STEWARD/SUPERVISOR Steward/Schooling Supervisors should be visible in the warm-up arena, but most importantly need to see the entire area well! 2

SCHOOLING AREAS All exercise areas are different in size, type of footing and jump material provided. The ground must be in good condition. The jumping area should be large enough to provide sufficient room for the training. 3

SCHOOLING AREAS The ability of horse and rider must always be taken into consideration Sufficient obstacle materials must be provided A minimum of one vertical, one spread fence and one trot fence must be provided. 4

SCHOOLING AREAS No one may hold a rail or touch a standard while it is being jumped. There may never be more than two rails on the back of an oxer, with the lower rail equal in height to the lowest rail on the front of the oxer. If an oxer is flagged so that it may only be jumped in one direction, there may only be one rail on the back. 5

SCHOOLING AREAS Flagging is optional. Flagged fences must be jumped accordingly. The Steward and/or Supervisor should decide if the flags may be interchanged. All rails must be either in cups or totally on the ground (one end of a cross rail may rest on the ground). 6

SCHOOLING AREAS Rails must be able to fall easily when hit. Standards, jump cups, and safety cups must also be made available. 7

SCHOOLING AREAS Rails must be able to fall easily when hit (this one is jammed in with the standard twisted sideways). 8

SAFETY CUPS FEI approved safety cup requirements in schooling rings Jumper The use of FEI Approved Safety Cups to support the back rails of all spread obstacles and all warm-up and schooling areas is mandatory. Hunter Required for the back rail of all spread obstacles at Premier competitions Strongly recommended at National and below (cups with breakable pins may be substituted) Equitation Strongly recommended for the back rail of all spread obstacles (cups with breakable pins may be substituted) Beginning 12/1/2019, with be mandatory in all schooling 9

SAFETY CUPS FEI approved safety cup requirements in competition rings Jumper Five Year Old classes - When using a Liverpool, the rails must be centered over the Liverpool and on Safety Cups The Liverpool must be used as an option All Jumper Classes - Any licensed competition must use FEI-approved Safety Release Cups for the back rails of all spread obstacles Liverpools - The rails may not exceed 1.50m in height and must be placed in safety cups Hunter/Equitation FEI approved safety mechanisms must be used in conjunction with a cup that is at least 1 ½ inches deep and at least 3 inches wide for the back rail of all oxers in the competition ring 10

SAFETY CUPS Cup must detach from key holes or pin portion to be considered a safety cup 11

HUNTER/JUMPING SEAT EQUITATION Schooling Rules for all equitation classes will follow USEF Jumper Schooling Rules (see JP Appendix A) EXCEPT: Swedish Oxers (maximum 12 difference), ground lines on both sides of an oxer, tarps, coolers and liverpools are acceptable. 12

RAIL PLACEMENT IN CUPS If placed on the lip of a cup it must be placed on the far side of the cup, and is only allowed at an oxer if it does not cause the front rail to be higher than the back rail (i.e. offset). 13

GROUND LINES Not mandatory, however when used they must be placed either directly below the front of the obstacle or up to 3 3 (1m) out. If a ground line is used on the landing side of an obstacle there must be one on the take off side, and it may not be any further out than the one on the take off side. If an oxer is flagged so it may only be jumped in one direction, the ground line is only permitted on the front of the oxer (except in equitation). If a jump is flagged in a hunter/jumping seat equitation schooling ring a ground line is permitted on both sides of the oxer so that the flag may simply be switched to change direction. 19

GROUND LINES JUMPING FROM RIGHT TO LEFT 20

WALK RAILS Walk rails are not permitted in the Jumper Schooling Area. In the Hunter Schooling Area: Cross rails are not permitted. Ground rails are not permitted. Walk rails may not exceed 12 (30cm) at the highest point, and may be built with one end of the rail resting on the ground. While using a walk rail, the competitor must approach and depart in a direct straight line. At no time may the horse be turned while walking over the rail. 21

WALK RAILS 22

WALK RAILS The rule for placement rails at a walk rail is the same as for obstacles to be jumped. It may be no closer than 8 2 on the approach side. No closer than 9 10 on the departure side. 23

WALK RAILS Horses are not permitted to walk over cross or slant rails. A slant rail is defined as a rail with one end resting on the ground and the other end higher than 12 (30cm). 24

PLACEMENT RAILS For Jumpers, if a trot/canter/placement rail is used it may only be used at a vertical which may not exceed 1.30 m (4 3 ) in height. For Hunters, if a trot/canter/placement rail is used, the jump may not be higher or wider than 4 3 (1.30 meters). If the rail is used on the take off side of an obstacle it may be no closer than 8 2 (2.50 meters). If the rail is used on the landing side of a vertical it may be no closer than 9 10 (3 meters). For Jumpers, any rail placed 6m (19 8 ) or further from the take off or landing side of a jump is not to be considered a placement rail and is allowed. For Hunters, if used on the landing side of an oxer it must not be closer than 20 from the back rail of the oxer. 25

TROT/CANTER PLACEMENT RAILS 26

TROT/CANTER PLACEMENT RAILS 27

GUIDE RAILS If guide rails are used on the landing side of an obstacle the closest part of the rail must be a minimum of 9 10 (3 meters) from the obstacle. 28

CROSS RAILS A cross rail may be made either by itself, in which case the height at which the cups are set may not exceed 4 3 (1.30 meters) in height, or below a rail at a vertical or the front rail of an oxer. 29

CROSS RAILS YES YES YES YES 30

CROSS RAILS 31

SWEDISH OXERS HUNTERS & HUNTER/ JUMPER SEAT EQUITATION No more than a 6 height difference (low to high point) for ponies No more than an 18 height difference (low to high point) for horses No more than an 12 height difference (low to high point) for Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation schooling rings 32

SWEDISH OXERS - JUMPERS SWEDISH OXERS are NOT permitted 33

COMBINATIONS If space and fence material allow and safety conditions permit, combinations may be built using correct distances. Bounce jumps may only be used with verticals and may consist of a maximum of three (3) obstacles not exceeding 29.5 (75cm) in height for Jumpers. For hunters, bounce jumps may only be used with verticals and may not exceed 1.10m (3 7 ) in height. 34

JUMPERS Jumps in the schooling area may not exceed 5 3 (1.60 meters) in height, 5 11 (1.80 meters) in width. Any obstacles 4 3 (1.30 meters) or higher must have a minimum of two rails, in cups, on the take off side of the obstacle, regardless of whether or not a ground line is used. The lower rail must always be below 4 3 (1.30 meters). 35

JUMPERS When schooling for a 5, 6, and 7 year old class in progress, jumps in the schooling area may not exceed the height or width by more than 10cm of the jumps in the class. For scheduled Five, Six or Seven Year Old classes, any schooling jump 1 m or over must have a minimum of two rails, in cups, on the take-off side of the jump, regardless of whether a ground line is used. The lower rail must always be below 1m. 36

37

JUMPERS Fences should be taped at two points. At the 4 3 (1.30 meters) mark, so when a rail is placed above the tape the competitor knows that he/she needs a second rail. At the 5 3 (1.60 meters) mark, so competitors know that they are not permitted to build higher than that point. 38
