Four different Storm players had at least 14 points on the night, including rookie forward Breanna Stewart, who finished just shy of a triple-double with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Stewart, who was named WNBA Rookie of the Month for May, recorded her third double-double of the season. Seattle, the No. 7 seed, was in control in the first half against the sixth-seeded Dream. But the hosts would overcome the Storm thanks to a 37-point night from star forward Angel McCoughtry, the seventh-highest scoring output in playoff history. In their postseason debuts, the Storm s Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart scored 24 and 19 points, respectively. Sue Bird added 12 points and seven assists for Seattle. Atlanta shot 53.1 percent for the game, while Seattle finished at just 38.9 percent. In addition to McCoughtry s 37 points on 14-of-21 shooting, Bria Holmes scored 21 points for the Dream. After a bit of a slow start for both teams, a Stewart three-pointer cut Seattle s early deficit to 9-8 midway through the first quarter. Stewart and McCoughtry went back and forth in the opening frame, with the Storm rookie scoring nine of her team s first 15 points, and McCoughtry notching seven straight points for the hosts. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis hit a three-pointer to give Seattle a one-point edge, and another McCoughtry bucket put Atlanta in front 19-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Storm scored from the free throw line often early in the second frame, with Stewart, Loyd and Mosqueda-Lewis contributing. Seattle would go on a 9-0 run, capped off when Loyd found Stewart for a fast-break layup that made it 30-23. McCoughtry ended the run with a jumper and continued to score, but the Storm s lead was increased to double digits late in the quarter after a Loyd layup in transition. It was just a two-point game heading into the fourth quarter, but the Storm went on a huge run and led by as many as 20 down the stretch. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 10 of her season-high 16 points in the fourth quarter, finishing the night with four three-pointers off the bench. Ramu Tokashiki, another reserve, led the way with nine points in the first half and finished with 14. Seattle s Breanna Stewart had game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds, recording her 12th double-double of the season. Stewart set a number of records in her rookie year, including the all-time mark for defensive rebounds in a season (277). Veteran point guard Sue Bird had 14 points and five assists on Sunday, finishing the season at a career-high 44.4 percent from three-point range. Bird also led the WNBA in assists (5.8 per game). Chicago was without reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne, who had thumb surgery last week. In addition, guards Cappie Pondexter and Courtney Vandersloot did not see action. The Storm had five turnovers in the opening frame, and the contest was tied at 18 heading into the second. Three-pointers by Mosqueda-Lewis and Alysha Clark helped Seattle build a advantage early in the second frame, but Chicago once again came from behind to take the lead after struggling to open the quarter. Tokashiki continued to contribute, and Bird knocked down a shot from long distance in the final seconds of the half to make it 39-34 heading into the break. Seattle scored the first eight points of the second half, six of which came from the foul line. The Storm s edge was increased to as many as 14 in the third quarter, but Chicago chipped away at the lead and closed the frame with a 7-0 run to pull within two. TONIGHT S OPPONENT Seattle 62, Phoenix 86 - Talking Stick Resort Arena (9/15/16) The Seattle Storm fell 86-62 to the Phoenix Mercury at Talking Stick Resort Arena. The Storm s four-game winning streak was snapped, and with the loss, Seattle now knows it couldn t host a playoff game until the Semifinals. Having already secured its postseason berth, Seattle remains in the seventh spot with one game remaining. The Storm (15-18) holds the edge over Phoenix (15-18) due to its two head-to-head wins earlier this season. Phoenix became the eighth and final team to reach the playoffs when Washington lost earlier on Thursday. Rookie forward Breanna Stewart paced the Storm with team highs of 14 points and nine rebounds, and frontcourt partner Crystal Langhorne finished with 10 points and eight boards. Second-year guard Jewell Loyd added 11 for the Storm, which shot just 35.0 percent from the field compared to 47.8 percent for the Mercury. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 11 points off the bench, hitting a trio of three-pointers. Brittney Griner scored a game-high 21 points for Phoenix, while Diana Taurasi poured in 15 and Candice Dupree added 14. After a slow start, Phoenix scored 12 unanswered points to build a commanding lead early in the first quarter, including a trio of jumpers from Penny Taylor. Stewart stopped the run with a pair of free throws that cut it to 12-6 midway through the frame. But after Mosqueda-Lewis knocked down her second three-pointer, the Mercury went on another huge run, notching 12 straight points to push its lead to 28-12. Mosqueda-Lewis hit another outside jumper early in the second, but the Mercury would only increase its edge as the rest of the Storm struggled from the field. The lead was up to 20 points with four minutes to go in the half, and Seattle faced a 50-29 deficit at halftime. Stewart hit a pair of jumpers in the opening minutes of the second half to help Seattle cut into the lead, and the Storm would go on to outscore Phoenix 21-17 in the third quarter. The deficit was trimmed to as little as 15, as Loyd scored a pair of buckets late in the frame to keep Seattle within striking distance.after Phoenix was ahead 67-50 heading into the fourth, Dupree and Taurasi were the catalysts down the stretch, helping the Mercury put the game out of reach. The all-time assist leader at Syracuse and reigning ACC Player of the Year, Peterson served as the floor general for the Orange, totaling 1,978 points and 590 assists to cap her career. The Storm traded its sixth and 18th picks in the 2017 WNBA Draft with Washington to get the Boston College graduate out to Seattle. The Mystics, as part of the three-way swap, sent Kia Vaughn and Bria Hartley to New York. In her final season with the Liberty, Swords averaged a career-best 5.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 57 percent from the floor. A SHINY, NEW JEWELL Jewell Loyd s jump from her rookie campaign to year two in the WNBA paid dividends in Seattle s late-season push for its 11th playoff appearance in franchise history. Loyd s points-per-game average jumped 5.8 points (from 10.7 to 16.5), and she also nearly doubled her assist average to 3.4 per contest in 2016. TEAM NOTES LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: SEATTLE HEADED FOR PRIMETIME IN HOLLYWOOD Seattle s season opener at Los Angeles on Saturday, May 13 will air on ESPN at 2 p.m. PDT. The Storm took two of three from the Sparks last season and has won six of the last seven meetings. The Storm-Sparks matchup will kickoff a 16-game regular season schedule of the 2017 WNBA slate on ESPN. In addition, ESPN will televise each game of the WNBA postseason from the first round to the finals. ROAD WARRIORS Although five of Seattle s first six games in 2017 will take place inside the friendly confines of KeyArena, the Storm will face a brutal road slate in August that covers 21,374 miles across six road contests in five different states. Last season, the Storm dropped 10 of 13 road games before fighting back to win three of its last five. HOT FINISH TO 2016 The Storm won five of its last six to cap the regular season in 2016 and earn the No. 7 seed in the WNBA Playoffs. Three of those triumphs came on the road, and Seattle won those five games by an average of 13.8 points. JENNY BOUCEK BIOGRAPHY WNBA Head Coaching Record: 65-83 Seattle Storm Head Coaching Record: 25-42 Seasons in the WNBA: 18th Season Seasons with the Storm: 11th Season (3rd as Head Coach) JENNY BOUCEK On Jan. 20, 2015, Jenny Boucek was named the fourth head coach in the history of the Seattle Storm and immediately set about rebuilding the team. In her two seasons at the helm, she coached consecutive WNBA Rookie of the Year winners in Jewell Loyd (2015) and Breanna Stewart (2016). Following a 10-24 campaign in 2015 with a roster that featured three rookies, Boucek s 2016 Storm improved to 16-18 for the franchises s first 15+ win season and playoff berth since 2013. Immediately prior to becoming the team s head coach, she spent four seasons with the Storm under then-head coach Brian Agler, rejoining the defending WNBA champions in 2010 as Dir. of Player Development and Scouting. She was promoted to associate head coach in 2014 Boucek has been involved in the WNBA since it s inaugural season, suiting up for the Cleveland Rockers in 1997. Following a careerending injury in 1998, she began her WNBA coaching career as an assistant with the Washington Mystics in 1999. She then spent three seasons, 2000-02, in the same capacity with the Miami Sol. Boucek enjoyed her first stint in Seattle on Anne Donovan s staff from 2003-05, a span which included the franchise s first WNBA Championship in 2004. Her first stop as a WNBA head coach came in Sacramento, leading the now-defunct Sacramento Monarchs to a 40-41 clip over two-plus seasons, spanning 2007-09. Notably respected as one of the top coaches in the league, Boucek has spent much of her career as a student of the game. She served as an advanced scout with the Seattle SuperSonics, and more recently, had full access to Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle s training camp in September and October of 2014. She was involved in all coaches meetings, film and practice sessions and player meetings. Boucek also played in Iceland in 1998 and was voted the country s best player after averaging 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists. She returned to Cleveland for the 1998 season but was forced to retire due to a career-ending back injury. A four-year starter at the University of Virginia (1992-96), Boucek helped lead the Cavaliers to four regular-season ACC Championships and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances. She was a two-time GTE Academic All-American team member and two-time ACC selection. Boucek twice earned team Defensive Player of the Year honors and finished her career at Virginia as a member of the 1,000-point club. She also competed in the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1993.
