The Bruins played the No. 4-ranked strength of schedule, as rated by Boyd s World (boydsworld.com). UCLA had four players selected in the 2014 MLB Draft, including two draftees in the first 10 rounds. UCLA finished fourth in ERA (3.35), third in strikeouts (412) and allowed the fewest walks (154) in the Pac-12. Sophomore James Kaprielian led the Pac-12 Conference with 108 strikeouts on the season. Junior Max Schuh logged the most relief appearances in the conference with 37. Junior catcher Shane Zeile was named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award. UCLA was represented on the All-Pac-12 team by Shane Zeile, David Berg and James Kaprielian. SEASON IN REVIEW UCLA fought through an injury-plagued season and finished ninth in the Pac-12 Conference with a 12-18 record. The Bruins finished the regular season with a 25-30-1 overall record. Sophomore James Kaprielian led the Pac-12 Conference with 108 strikeouts on the season while UCLA as a staff allowed the fewest walks in the Pac-12 with 154. The Bruins played a tough schedule in 2014, playing the fourth-toughest schedule in the nation. This marks the ninth consecutive year that UCLA has played a schedule that is ranked among the top-five most difficult in the country. Finally, the Bruins capped off the season with four players being selected in the 2014 MLB Draft (Shane Zeile, Max Schuh, Jake Ehret and David Berg). NATIONAL EXPOSURE This season, UCLA enjoyed more national exposure than ever with 19 televised games between the Pac-12 Networks and ESPN. UCLA made 17 total appearances on the Pac-12 Networks this season and two appearances on ESPNU as well. In total, eight of the 19 TV appearances came at Jackie Robinson Stadium. NO. 1 STARTER Sophomore right-hander James Kaprielian served as UCLA s Friday night starter all season and flourished in his newfound role. After earning freshman All-America honors from Perfect Game USA and Collegiate Baseball in 2013, Kaprielian continued that success into 2014, posting a 7-6 record with a 2.29 ERA (seventh-lowest in the Pac-12) and a conference-leading 108 strikeouts. His 108 strikeouts were also good for 17th-most in the nation. In addition, Kaprielian s 2.29 ERA was the lowest among all UCLA starting pitchers and his 106 innings pitched led all UCLA pitchers (sixth-most in the Pac-12). Kaprielian also held opposing hitters to a.201 batting average against him, the fifth-lowest opposing average in the Pac-12, and allowed two runs or less in 11 of his 15 starts. In addition, Kaprielian pitched at least six innings in 13 of his 15 starts (including the last 11) and logged double-digit strikeouts five times this season. Finally, Kaprielian was particularly effective down the stretch, posting a 1.72 ERA and 32 strikeouts in his final four starts. SATURDAY STARTER Junior left-hander Grant Watson moved up from being UCLA s Sunday starter in 2013 to the team s Saturday starter in 2014. Watson went 4-9 in 17 appearances (15 starts) this season, striking out 71 batters in 97 innings pitched while posting a 3.80 ERA. He also led all Pac-12 pitchers with five pickoffs this season. In his career, Watson has logged a 21-14 record as a starter and pitched at least six innings in 12 of his 15 starts this season. In addition, Watson posted 10 quality starts this year (6 IP, 3 ER or less). ROUNDING OUT THE ROTATION Sophomore right-hander Cody Poteet rounded out the Bruins rotation in 2014, serving as the team s Sunday starter. After playing with the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League this past summer and being selected as one of the league s All-Stars, Poteet went 3-5 in 17 appearances (15 starts) for the Bruins, logging an ERA of 4.46 while striking out 49 batters in 78.2 innings pitched. He also surrendered just 16 walks all season, the fifth-fewest in the conference. Additionally, Poteet logged quality starts in five of his last six starts of the season. His best start of the year came on March 2 vs. Michigan at the Notre Dame Classic, where he pitched a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 13 batters and walking none. PLAYING FROM AHEAD In the last two seasons, UCLA has done a tremendous job of getting an early lead and then not relinquishing that lead. The Bruins are a combined 45-17-1 when they score first in the last two seasons and since the start of 2013 are 61-2 when leading after the seventh inning. Additionally, UCLA has a record of 28-9 in the last two seasons when scoring in the first inning. ALL-PAC-12 TEAM UCLA landed three players on the All-Pac-12 team in 2014 in pitchers David Berg and James Kaprielian and catcher/infielder Shane Zeile. Berg served as UCLA s closer during the year, going 3-2 with a team-leading 1.50 ERA and 11 saves in 31 relief appearances. He also struck out 35 batters in 48 innings pitched, allowing just eight earned runs all year and walking only eight. Berg earned All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year, making him just the fifth UCLA player all-time to receive All-Pac-12 acclaim in three different seasons (Garrett Atkins (1998-2000), Trevor Bauer (2009-11), Dennis Delany (1976-78) and Adam Plutko (2011-13). Zeile started all 56 games for the Bruins, leading the team in batting average (.324), hits (70), slugging percentage (.421) and RBI (28). As mentioned above, Kaprielian led the Pac-12 with 108 strikeouts and went 7-6 with a 2.29 ERA. Both Zeile and Kaprielian earned All-Conference honors for the first time in their careers.

The Bruins went 11-10-1 on the road this season. TAKING THE HITS UCLA did a remarkable job this season of reaching base via the hit by pitch. Overall, UCLA hitters were hit by a pitch 75 times in 56 games this year, which ranked third in the Pac-12. Sophomore Ty Moore led the Bruins individually with 13 hit by pitches, which was also good for seventh-most in the conference. Sophomore Christoph Bono and senior Brian Carroll finished right behind Moore with 12 and 10 hit by pitches respectively. UCLA had a batter get hit by a pitch in 26 of its last 36 games and had a total of 49 batters get hit by a pitch in those 36 games. Last season, the Bruins drew 82 hit by pitches, the most in the Pac-12 Conference. HOT-HITTING BACKSTOP Junior catcher Shane Zeile was selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award in 2014, handed out to the nation s top collegiate catcher. Overall, Zeile led the Bruins with a.324 batting average while also leading UCLA with 28 RBI. Zeile, who was also named to the Gregg Olson Award Watch List for Breakout Player of the Year, logged a team-high 21 multi-hit games while leading UCLA with 70 total hits (tied for seventh-most in the Pac-12). In addition, Zeile posted a.401 on-base percentage and reached base safely in 35 of his last 40 games. Zeile batted.307 in his last 26 games, logged at least one RBI in six of his last nine games and hit.306 with 15 RBI and 15 runs scored in conference play. Behind the plate, Zeile threw out 18 attempted base stealers, tied for the most in the Pac-12 Conference. SWINGING THE BATS Several Bruins swung the bat well in Pac-12 play this season. Sophomore Trent Chatterton led the team with a.324 average in conference play while junior Shane Zeile and sophomore Ty Moore batted.306 and.297 respectively. Moore scored a team-leading 21 runs in Pac-12 games, logging 11 RBI and a team-high.459 slugging percentage as well, while Chatterton scored 13 runs and drove in seven. Chatterton also led the Bruins with a.419 on-base percentage in conference games only and hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games overall. Additionally, Chatterton batted.345 overall since the start of the Arizona series on April 11 while Moore led the Bruins overall with 14 doubles on the year. Finally, freshman Brett Stephens also hit the ball well in Pac-12 play, batting at a.277 clip with six runs scored. NINE-YEAR COMPOSITE In conference games since 2006, UCLA ranks third in wins (144) and win percentage (.595), trailing only Arizona State and Oregon State. The Bruins are third in total wins (334) and overall win percentage (.611) among Pac-12 teams. UCLA and Arizona split the 2012 Pac-12 title, and UCLA won the 2011 Pac-10 championship in outright fashion for the first time since 1986. In 2013, UCLA won the first NCAA title in program history. In three seasons, Berg has made a school record 132 appearances, breaking the previous mark of 119 set by Bill Wenrick from 1984-87 and leading all active players in Division I baseball. He has also posted a 15-5 record with a 1.26 ERA in his career. Berg also owns the NCAA single-season record for saves with 24 in 2013 and tied the NCAA record for most appearances in a season with 51 last year. Additionally, he became the first reliever in conference history to win Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year last season and was UCLA s first recipient of the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given out to the nation s top relief pitcher. Berg was named to the All- Pac-12 Team for the third time in his career in 2014, making him just the fifth UCLA player all-time to receive all-conference acclaim in three straight years. In addition, he finished second in the country in both WHIP (0.85) and ERA last year. Berg is the only pitcher in UCLA history to lead the conference in ERA in back-to-back seasons and is UCLA s all-time record holder for most postseason appearances (17), postseason saves (6) and career saves (36). This season, Berg threw 48 innings in 31 appearances, all while logging a 3-2 record, 11 saves and a team-leading 1.50 ERA. Berg s 11 saves were the fourth-most in the conference and he concluded the season by being selected in the 17th round of the MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. HEAD COACH JOHN SAVAGE Head coach John Savage was named the 2013 National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, the ABCA and Perfect Game USA. By guiding the Bruins to their second straight College World Series last year, Savage became one of just 10 coaches all-time from the Pac-12 to lead their teams to back-to-back College World Series appearances. Additionally, Savage is one of just five coaches in college baseball history to have led his team to one CWS championship, produced a No. 1 MLB Draft pick and coached a Golden Spikes Award winner. Savage helped UCLA post an overall record of 49-17 in 2013, marking the secondhighest single-season win total in school history, and is UCLA s all-time winningest postseason manager with 32 postseason victories. UCLA also matched a school record with 21 conference victories in 2013. Finally, Savage has guided the Bruins to the postseason in seven of the last nine seasons and has a winning percentage of.667 since 2010. STRONG STAFF UCLA s pitching staff picked up right where it left off in 2013 as the Bruins put together great performances on the mound throughout the season. UCLA as a team held opponents to a.242 batting average, the fourth-lowest in the conference. The Bruins also finished the year with the third-most strikeouts (412) in the conference and allowed 154 walks all season, the fewest in the Pac-12. Additionally, UCLA s bullpen posted an ERA of 2.95 this season while holding opponents to a.231 batting average. UCLA s starting pitchers posted an ERA of 3.55. Junior Max Schuh led the Pac-12 conference and finished seventh in the nation with 37 appearances out of the bullpen while freshman Nick Kern was third in the conference with 33. The Bruins also allowed three runs or less to the opposition in 29 of their 56 games this season and in the last two seasons are 63-7 when holding the opposing team to three runs or fewer. 2014 MLB DRAFT SELECTIONS Player Position Class Round Overall Team Shane Zeile C/INF Junior 5th 160 Detroit Tigers Max Schuh LHP RS Junior 7th 211 Baltimore Orioles Jake Ehret RHP RS Sophomore 14th 425 Cincinnati Reds David Berg RHP Junior 17th 516 Texas Rangers This season, UCLA had four players selected in the MLB Draft. Head coach John Savage has seen 69 MLB draft selections at UCLA in his 10 seasons at the helm, including 25 players selected in the first 10 rounds. FINISHING STRONG The Bruins ended their 2014 season on a high note, winning the series at No. 8 Washington by taking two of three games. In the opener on Friday night, UCLA shut out the Huskies by a score of 3-0 behind yet another strong performance on the mound from sophomore James Kaprielian. Kaprielian tossed eight shutout innings while striking 11, giving way to David Berg in the ninth who then earned the save. Sophomore Justin Hazard drove in two of the Bruins three runs in the game while sophomore Trent Chatterton reached base in four of his five plate appearances. Then in game two on Saturday, the Bruins scored five runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 6-3 come-from-behind victory. Hazard once again led the UCLA offense, going 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored while sophomore Ty Moore followed that up with a 2-3 performance that included two runs. UCLA dropped the finale to Washington, 6-1, but was still able to leave Washington with a series win.
