The Happenings Around the Club Winter Movie Night February 26 th 6:30 P.M. The Greens Report It s February, so hopefully that means the end of winter is in sight. February is also a signal to us to make sure all winter projects are complete, because the growing season is right around the corner. The wet winter that we have had so far has slowed us down. Our first pre-emergent application this spring will be at the first of February. We are moving up the normal application date this year because of all of the rain we have received this winter. The efficacy/longevity of the fall application has been affected by the weather. So moving up the application date is our best option against weed germination the spring. The two weeds that we target are Goosegrass and Crabgrass. The Crabgrass germinates around the soil temperature of 50 degrees. Goose grass germinates when the soil temperature reach 60 degrees. A good visual indication of when to apply pre-emergent is when the Forsythia s bloom. This can be the time for home owners to apply a pre-emergent to their yards if you so desire. The key to having a weed free yard/golf course (or as close to weed free as possible-nothing will prevent 100% of the weeds) is to prevent them from developing. If you ever have any questions or concerns about the golf course or grass in general, please ask. See you on the course! Alex Tolbert Greens Superintendent Currents
Golf Announcements The rules of the game CGA Rules of Golf Seminar - Wednesday, February 6 th 2019 Valentines Sweetheart Scramble Date: Saturday, February 16 th Entry Deadline: Sunday, February 10 th Time: 3 P.M. Shotgun start Cost: $10 per couple, plus cart fees Format: 2-person Scramble MGA Winter Fourball By now, most of you have already been discussing some of the changes to the Rules of Golf. Representatives from the Carolinas Golf Association will be here to conduct a free seminar regarding these changes. The 2- hour seminar begins at 5:30. Please register for this event at cga.golfgenius.com/ pages/1762112 or visit the CGA website at carolinasgolf.org. The deadline to register is February 5 at 5:00. While there are many changes to the rules, here are just a couple of the changes that will affect our daily play at OCC: 1) Local Rule for Ball Lost Outside of Penalty Area / Out-ofbounds - per the USGA... This option allows the player to drop in a large area between the point where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds and the edge of the fairway of the hole being played that is not nearer the hole. The player gets two penalty strokes when using this relief option. This means that the relief is comparable to what could have been achieved if the player had taken stroke-and-distance relief. The main purpose of this rule change is to promote faster play. ***Please note that this local rule is for DAILY play ONLY. This option will NOT be allowed during our events. Date: Saturday, February 23 rd Entry Deadline: Sunday, February 17 th Time: 8 A.M. Breakfast Shotgun start Cost: $30 per team, plus cart fees Format: 2-person Better Ball Taylor Made Fitting Day Saturday, March 2 nd Come out and test the newest offerings from Taylor Made Golf. Representatives will be on site with launch monitors from 11:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. conducting personalized fittings of the new M5 / M6 line of equipment that has been Engineered to make everybody faster with Injected Twist Face. Fitting appointments are in 30-minute blocks so please register in advance to guarantee the best service. 2) Loose impediments - under the new rules, a player may remove loose impediments when playing from a bunker or penalty area. Previously, we had adopted a Local Rule that permitted the removal of stones and rocks from bunkers only. Reminders With the spring golf season quickly approaching, here are a few reminders to enhance your golf experience: Guest Play Policy: OCC guests may play up to 6 times per calendar year, whether it s 9-holes or 18. If you have a friend who enjoys the club, please encourage him / her to join our membership and enjoy all that the club has to offer, without limitations. Tee Times: Spring is also our busiest time of year. While we try to accommodate everyone who wants to play, we also have to manage the tee sheet in the most efficient way possible too. If call you call the golf shop or book online to reserve a tee time as either a single or party of 2, at the discretion of the golf shop staff you will be paired with another group of 2 as close as possible to time that you ve requested. Managing a golf course filled with groups of 4 is not only more profitable, it is more enjoyable for everyone involved.
