This season he returns five national qualifiers to a team that finished 15th at the 2005 NCAA Championships. A former University of Iowa all-american and national champion, Penrith was named head coach on June 21, 2000, becoming only the ninth wrestling coach in the program s history. In his sixth season at the helm, he has a record of 53-43-2 and has sent 39 wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships. Last season, he guided his team to a record of 8-7 and qualified eight for the national tournament. Senior Sean Stender became the first UNI wrestler since Justin Greenlee in 1995 to three-peat at the National Tournament, placing second at 197 pounds. Eric Hauan made his fourth and final trip to the NCAAs, earning all- America honors for the second consecutive season at 174 pounds. Having been affiliated with the Panther program since 1997, three of those years as an assistant coach, Penrith has been instrumental in securing five Top 25 recruiting classes. Last year, the UNI recruiting class was ranked 13th in the nation and was fourth in the 2003-04 season. In all of Penrith s six seasons, UNI has been ranked in the top 15. Athletically, Penrith s credentials are outstanding. He won the 126-pound national championship at Iowa in 1986 as a sophomore, then placed second at 126 in 1987 and 1988. He was a three-time Big Ten champ for the Hawkeyes and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the conference meet in 1986. A 1988 Iowa graduate, Penrith also made his mark at the international level before retiring in 1996. He captured a Silver Medal at the 1991 World Championships, was the Gold Medalist at the Pan American Games in 1991 and won the title at the Pan American Games Championship in 1989. Closer to home, he placed third at the 1996 Olympic Team Trials, won the U.S. Nationals three times--1989, 91 and 93--and was second at the 92 Final Olympic Wrestle-Off. As a coach, Penrith is renowned as an excellent technician and recruiter. He has been involved with USA Wrestling at several levels of coaching and in the summer of 1999, he was the head coach of the United States team that competed at the Junior World Freestyle Championships in Sydney, Australia, which took the Bronze Medal in the team competition. A native of Windsor, N.Y, Penrith was a fourtime state placewinner in high school, including winning the state title as a sophomore in 1981. He was named the Outstanding Greco-Roman Wrestler at the 1983 Junior Nationals. He and his wife, Laura, have two sons, Gabriel (7) and Jacob (5), and a daughter, Grace Marie (2).

Division II to Division I. UNC currently competes as an Independent. Currently in his 19th year at Northern Colorado, head coach Jack Maughan will continue a new era as the Bears re-enter the Division I ranks after a more than 30-year absence. Maughan has been instrumental in helping to establish a possible new wrestling conference with UNI, Eastern Illinois, Fresno State, Air Force, Wyoming, Utah Valley State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. UNC s lineup will feature 19th-ranked Reece Hopkin at 197 pounds. SCOUTING THE BISON NDSU, located in Fargo, N.D., has an enrollment of 12,099. The Bison wrestling squad is under the direction of legendary head coach Bucky Maughan. Maughan, the father of UNC s head coach, is in his 42nd year at the helm of the Bison. He has a 424-119-11 record to date in dual meets and has guided the Bison to 17 North Central Conference titles, four NCAA Division II championships, and 26 top-five national finishes. The Bison won nine straight NCC titles from 1982 to 1990 under his direction. He is a member of five halls of fame after his 2003 induction to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. PRESS LUNCHEONS UNI head coach Brad Penrith or one of his assistants will be available at the weekly Press Luncheons held each Monday beginning at 12 noon in the back room of Pepper s Grill and Sports Pub located on 18th Street in Cedar Falls. #10 MISSOURI KNOCKS OFF #25 UNI IN WEST GYM, 26-10 The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team dropped its eighth decision of the year to a nationally-ranked squad as the No. 10-ranked Missouri Tigers won in the West gym, 26-10. Despite the dual loss, UNI did provide some highlights with No. 6-ranked Nick Baima knocking off No. 5-ranked Matt Pell at 165 pounds. Baima trailed 3-0 early in the second period but was able to knot the match at 4-4 with a takedown at the 43-second mark of the second period. Baima was able to ride out the period and wipe away the riding time advantage Pell had gained earlier in the second stanza. Baima was able to wear down Pell in the third period with an escape and takedown to take control of the match. Baima added a final takedown with 16 seconds left to finish off the higher-ranked wrestler, 9-5. Baima s victory gave the Panthers a 6-3 lead in the dual. UNI had gotten on the board early in dramatic fashion from Ryan Osgood at 149 pounds. Osgood barely reached the overtime period as Missouri s Michael Chandler appeared to score a takedown at the third period buzzer, but referee Mike Exline ruled the takedown came after the horn. Osgood was able to use his good fortune to notch a reversal with eight seconds in the second sudden victory period to earn the win, 3-2. Heavyweight Tyler Rhodes scored the only other Panther victory of the night with a dominating 16-5 major decision over the Tigers Sean Connole. I thought we had a chance to win seven of the matches but we just couldn t win the swing matches, UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. UNI, NIU SETTLE FOR 16-16 TIE The No. 25-ranked University of Northern Iowa wrestling team had to settle for a 16-16 tie against the No. 24- ranked Northern Illinois Huskies. UNI held a 10-3 lead after four matches, but saw the lead disappear as NIU won four of the final six matches. The Panthers gained an early bonus point from an 11-1 major decision from senior Chris Bitetto at 157 pounds. Junior Nick Baima increased the Panther lead to 7-3 with a 2-0 win at 165 pounds. Redshirt freshman Moza Fay, wrestling up two weights for an injured Curt Zinnel, notched an 8-3 win at 174 pounds. But Northern Illinois rallied and took advantage of a bonus point of its own at 125 pounds from No. 11-ranked Pat Castillo. Castillo scored a 16-7 major decision over UNI s Seth Wright. UNI senior Chris Helgeson gave the Panthers a 16-13 lead with one dual remaining, but NIU s No. 11-ranked Josh Wooton scored a 5-3 decision over UNI s No. 20-ranked C.J. Ettelson. UNI ROPES WYOMING, 23-19 UNI captured six of the 10 matches contested against the Wyoming Cowboys and used a pin from C.J. Ettelson to nab a 23-19 dual win. However, Wyoming countered with two wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight to take a 15-8 dual lead with five matches remaining. UNI responsed with three straight wins from Seth Wright (125 lbs.), Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.) and C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.) to turn the deficit into a 20-15 advantage. Ettelson s victory came via fall at the 4:07 mark of the match and it was his second pin of the day. But UNI redshirt freshman Moza Fay came through in the clutch with a 12-8 victory at 157 pounds over Wyoming s Dan Clum. Fay s decision gave UNI the 23-19 dual win. UNI DOMINATES EIU, 38-15 The UNI overcame an early 15-5 deficit to storm past Eastern Illinois, 38-15. Junior Nick Baima scored another dominating win at 165 pounds with a 23-6 technical fall over EIU s Tyler Brucker. UNI trailed 15-5, but scored six straight wins to close out the comeback. Junior Tyler Rhodes began the comeback with a pin at heavyweight and junior Seth Wright tallied a forfeit win at 125 pounds. UNI continued the rout with three straight pins from Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.), C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.) and Justin Swafford (149 lbs.). Senior Chris Bitetto finished off the dual with a 13-8 victory at 157 pounds over EIU s Thomas Johnson. UNI SCORES 19-18 WIN AT UTC The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team secured its third win of the season with a 19-18 victory over the University of Tennesee at Chattanooga in the Maclellan Gym. UNI (3-7-1) won six of the 10 matches to take the dual and please head coach Brad Penrith. It was a good win for us, Penrith said. Chattanooga is hard-nosed and we knew it was going to be tough to win down here. We knew we were going to have to fight hard because they would battle us. 9TH-RANKED CYCLONES SCORE 24-15 WIN OVER UNI The No. 24-ranked University of Northern Iowa wrestling team could not quite overcome the No. 9-ranked Iowa State Cyclones in the West Gym. UNI won four matches in the dual, including a pin from 165-pounder Nick Baima. But Iowa State (9-4) recorded six match victories, including three major decisions and a pin. UNI got on the board at 133 pounds as senior Chris Helgeson notched an 8-5 victory over ISU s Jesse Sundell. Helgeson turned the tide in his match when he scored a takedown with only nine seconds left in the second period to take a 4-2 advantage. UNI got back on the board with a thirdperiod pin from junior Nick Baima. Baima worked over his Cyclones opponent Dane Kuper and had a 19-5 lead when he scored the pin at the 6:22 mark of the match. The Panthers were able to close out the dual on a high note with two wins. Andrew Anderson gutted out a 4-2 decision over ISU s Joe Curran at 197 pounds. Anderson scored the only points in the first two periods with an escape to begin the second stanza. Anderson clinched the victory with a takedown with only 48 seconds left in the match. At heavyweight, UNI s Tyler Rhodes dominated ISU s Richard Schopf with 4:02 riding time in an 8-2 victory. CORNELL ELIMINATES UNI FROM NATIONAL DUALS, 19-15 The UNI wrestling squad was eliminated from the 2006 National Duals by the Cornell Big Red, 19-15, in the consolation round. Cornell, the 12th-ranked team in the country, withstood a UNI rally in the middle of the dual by taking three of the final four matches. Cornell opened up a 6-0 lead after two matches, but UNI stormed back with wins in three of the next four. C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.) began the charge with an 8-3 victory over Matt Easter. Then after Colby Goetsch (149 lbs.) suffered a 3-2 loss to Mike Reish, the Panthers Moza Fay (157 lbs.) continued his torrid season with a fall at 4:10 over the Big Red s Curtis Roddy. Nick Baima (165 lbs.) won his second match of the day with a 10-7 triumph over Cornell s Steve Anceravage. BAIMA NAMED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER AT MIDLANDS University of Northern Iowa junior Nick Baima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) made the most of his two days at the 43rd Annual Midlands Wrestling Championships by being named the tournament s Most Outstanding Wrestler after claiming the 165-pound title. Although Baima was dominant in the tournament, he was far from the entire story as a total of four Panthers found their way onto the medal stand and fourth others missed out on the medal stand by one victory. Head coach Brad Penrith said after the tournament that he could not be happier with his team s performance after the Panthers tied for sixth place in the team standings with Northern Illinois as each team scored 79.0 points. I really thought we wrestled the best we have this season as a team, Penrith said. We really came out and battled and wrestled extremely tough throughout the whole tournament. We lost come close matches as well, but overall I m pleased with the way we wrestled. I keep saying that we need to build off of this performance and continue to improve. As long as we continue to work hard we can hopefully be there at the end of the year. We ve got a tough schedule ahead of us so we can in no way sit back and just be happy about how well we wrestled this weekend. Baima became the first UNI wrestler to win an individual title at one of the nation s most prestigious events since Dylan Long finished off back-to-back titles at 141 pounds at the 2003 Midlands. Baima was able to score a 6-5 doubleovertime win over Mike Poeta (Illinois) in the 165-pound title match. At 125 lbs., Seth Wright (Payson, Utah) placed sixth after posting a 5-3 record over the two-day tournament. Wright entered Midlands as an unseeded competitor. At 141 lbs., C.J. Ettelson (Hudson, Iowa) came into Midlands as the No. 7 seed but battled his way to third-place finish with a 5-1 record. At 197 lbs., Andrew Anderson (Sioux City, Iowa) finished up strong with a fifthplace finish after notching a 4-3 win over No. 6 seed Nathan Moore (Purdue) in his final match of the tournament. Anderson posted a 4-2 mark at the event. Penrith also commended the efforts of Colby Goetsch (149 lbs.), Chris Bitetto (157 lbs.), Moza Fay (157 lbs.) and Tyler Rhodes (HWT) as the foursome missed out on the medal round by only one win. PANTHERS NAB FIRST DUAL WIN The UNI wrestling squad registered its first dual win of the season it rolled to a 34-6 victory over Old Dominion. The Panthers won eight of the 10 matches contested, including tallying bonus points in seven of the eight victories. UNI notched three pins on the day as Seth Wright (125 lbs.), Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.) and Nick Baima (165 lbs.) all scored falls. Colby Goetsch (149 lbs.), Chris Bitetto (157 lbs.), Curt Zinnel (174 lbs.) and Dan Dunning (184 lbs.) all netted major decisions to aid the Panthers effort. PANTHERS ROLL PAST HOKIES The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team scored a 37-7 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies. UNI used three forfeit victories to roll to the dual win. UNI s forfeit wins came from Moza Fay (157 lbs.), Curt Zinnel (174 lbs.) and Dan Dunning (184 lbs.) The Panthers got the dual rolling with two early wins from Seth Wright (125 lbs.) and Chris Helgeson (133 lbs.). The two wins gave UNI a 6-0 lead. Ryan Osgood (141 lbs.) suffered a 15-6 loss, but then the Panthers rolled off six straight wins to take control. Included in the six wins were the three forfeits. Nick Baima (165 lbs.) tallied an easy 23-8 technical fall and Jeff Knoll (197 lbs.) closed out the Panther win with a 5-4 decision. 8TH-RANKED BADGERS SLIP PAST PANTHERS, 19-16 The UNI wrestling team came up on the short end of an upset bid as the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers rallied for a 19-16 dual win at the West Gym. The Panthers fell behind early 6-0 as the Badgers Justin Peterson (184 lbs.) and Dallas Herbst (197 lbs.) scored wins over Dan Dunning and Andrew Anderson. UNI got on the board with a 14-1 major decision victory from Tyler Rhodes at heavyweight. The Panthers Seth Wright gave the home squad its first lead in the dual at 7-6 with a 13-8 win at 125 pounds. The Badgers answered back with an 8-2 win from No. 2-ranked Tom Clum at 133 pounds over UNI s Chris Helgeson. But UNI s C.J. Ettelson rode out Wisconsin s Ed Gutnik over the final two periods to tally a 3-0 win at 141 pounds. The victory gave UNI a 10-9 dual lead. Wisconsin s Tyler Turner turned the tables in the dual and put the visitor s back on top at 13-9 with a 10-2 major decision over UNI s Justin Swafford. UNI s middle weight strength came though again with a pair of victories from 157-pounder Chris Bitetto and 165- pounder Nick Baima. Bitetto tallied an 8-5 win over the Badgers Craig Henning, who was ranked No. 8 in the nation. Baima overpowered the Badgers Jake Donar with a shutout win, 3-0. But the dual came down to the final match and the Badgers Kelly Flaherty scored a second-period pin over the Panthers Curt Zinnel. The pin allowed the Badgers to take the dual, 19-16. The Panthers fell behind 16-0 after the first five matches of the dual before responding with three victories from Nick Baima (165 lbs.), De Andre Nunn (184 lbs.) and Andrew Anderson (197 lbs.). FAY CAPTURES TWO OPEN TITLES Redshirt freshman Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) captured two individual titles this season. Fay posted a 4-0 mark at the Mike McCready Memorial Open in Fayette, Iowa, on Dec. 10. Fay then went 3-0 at the Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 20 to take first-place honors in the 157-pound weight class. More than 350 wrestlers from across the midwest participated in the event. UNI s C.J. Ettelson (Hudson, Iowa) and Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) both took second-place honors in the event. Ettelson went 4-1 in the 141-pound weight class,

while Fay went 5-1 in the 157-pound category. The Panthers Chris Helgeson, Chris Bitetto, Curt Zinnel, De Andre Nunn and Tyler Rhodes all earned fourth-place finishes in the UNI Open. GOPHERS TOP PANTHERS, 31-6 The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team opened its dual schedule on Dec. 2 in the West Gym against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The sixthranked Gophers came out on top, 31-6. Although not indicated by the final score, most of the matches were hard-fought, close battles. The opening match of the night between UNI s 10th ranked Nick Baima and Minnesota fifth-ranked Matt Nagel at 165 pounds was the highlight for the Panthers. Baima revenged last season s loss to Nagel, defeating the Gopher 6-3. Sophomore C.J. Ettelson had the other win for UNI at 141 pounds. Ettelson slipped past Manuel Rivera by a 19-16 decision. Going into the third period, Ettelson led 12-0 but Rivera fought back scoring 16 points in the closing minutes. PENRITH INKS CONTRACT EXTENSION THRU 2008-09 University of Northern Iowa head wrestling coach Brad Penrith has received a contract extension through the 2008-09 season, UNI director of athletics Rick Hartzell announced Nov. 1. This is a three-year extension, as Penrith s current contract was set to expire at the end of the Panthers 2005-06 campaign. Brad has done a tremendous job for UNI and our wrestling program, said Hartzell. He has done everything that we have asked and more in regards to building a program, maintaining a high level of excellence and being a team player in this department. I am extraordinarily proud of Brad and his personal growth, and the performance of our wrestling student-athletes, both in the classroom, the community and on that mat, is something very special. In Penrith s five-year tenure at UNI, eight wrestlers have been crowned all- Americans and the Panthers have always finished among the top-21 teams at the NCAA tournament, qualifying at least seven wrestlers each season. Penrith holds a career dual record of 48-35, scheduling contests against top-ranked opponents year in and year out. Under Penrith, three Panthers have reached the NCAA Championship match with Tony Davis (149) taking the title in 2000, Dylan Long (141) placing second in 2003 and Sean Stender (197) placing second last season. Stender became the first UNI wrestler to become a three-time all-american since Justin Greenlee. It is extremely flattering and exciting to be able to sign this contract extension, Penrith said. It shows the commitment Rick Hartzell and our UNI administration has in the wrestling program and the belief that we are moving in the right direction.
