IF THE IU WINS FRIDAY NIGHT... the winning streak extends to seven straight it will be the best start (10-2) since 2002, the last time Indiana qualified for the NCAA Tournament the Hoosiers will have defeated a team that reached the Sweet 16 last season IF THE IU SWEEPS THE WEEKEND... the winning streak extends to nine straight it will be the best start (12-2) since 1997 (15-0) Indiana will finish the non-conference schedule with five wins over 08 NCAA Qualifiers BLOCK BRIGADE Coach Dunbar and Coach Gustin, both middle blockers during their collegiate careers, have the 2009 Hoosiers amongst the nation s elite in terms of blocking through the first three weeks of the season. Indiana s 2.91 stuffs per set average is the 10th highest in the country. SATURDAY = PHATURDAY Take note Alabama A&M and North Carolina A&T: the Hoosiers are red-hot on Saturdays, remaining undefeated with a 6-0 record. IU has won a pair of Saturday matches in each of the first three weekends. THE NUMBERS DON T LIE Four different Hoosiers can be found in the Big Ten s statistical rankings. Ashley Benson s.408 hitting efficiency is the third best in the conference (26th in the nation) and ranks sixth with 1.25 blocks per set. Taylor Wittmer is slotted fourth (22nd nationally) with her 1.40 blocks/set pace. Jordan Haverly paces the Hoosiers with 3.72 kills per set, which places her sixth in the Big Ten rankings. Caitlin Cox s MVP showing at the Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend propelled her into the Digs Top-10, raising her season average to 3.90 digs a set. TEAM TITLE #2 The Hoosiers marched into Athens, Ohio for the Hampton Inn Invitational and walked out with their second tournament title of the season and four wins, including three victories over teams that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Caitlin Cox and her 88 digs during that weekend earned MVP honors. Ashley Benson, Kelsey Hall and Jordan Haverly joined Cox on the all-tourney team. I AM THE GREATEST Benson can currently say she is the greatest attacker ever at IU in terms of hitting effieincy. She entered the season just.02 percentage points behind Diane Hoereth (1989-90) for the all-time mark, but her hot start has pushed her to the top spot with a career clip of.306. 2009 STATISTICAL LEADERS Kills... The Hoosiers cruised through the weekend, dropping just one set in three matches. LISTEN UP Live audio broadcasts of all IU Volleball matches are back for the 2009 season. Jeremy Gray and Dave Leno are set to provide all the play-by-play duties for the Hoosier Volleyball action. NON-CONFERENCE CHALLENGES The Hoosiers quest for postseason play begins with four preseason tournaments, pitting IU against 14 non-conference opponents. Indiana will face some quality competition during the first four weeks with six NCAA qualifiers from a year ago the docket. In addition, four of the nonconference foes are either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. TWO-SPORT STAR Whitney Thomas will return to the court for a fifth year this upcoming season... the volleyball court that is. Thomas is taking advantage of an NCAA rule which affords student-athletes a fifth year of eligibility to play one season of a different sport. On the basketball court, Thomas put together one of the finest careers in Indiana Women s Basketball history. The Bloomington, Ind., native became just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds; and the only player to ever hit the double millennium mark while also compiling 200 steals. Her 237 career swipes rank second all-time in IU lore. Thomas graduated from IU in May, but has enrolled in graduate school and will pursue her master s degree while playing right-side hitter for the volleyball team this fall. As a two-sport standout at Bloomington North High School, Thomas was heavily recruited by several bigtime volleyball programs coming out of high school before ultimately choosing to play hoops for the Hoosiers. Last season, IU Volleyball entertained the Hoosier faithful packed into Assembly Hall with a 3-1 win over Ohio State. In 2007, a crowd of 11,000+ showed up to watch Indiana take on Michigan State, the fourth largest volleyball crowd in the country that season. YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS A study by the UT Martin sports information office shows that Indiana is one of the youngest teams in D-I Volleyball in terms of collegiate playing experience. The Hoosiers return just 10 years of collegiate playing experience, the fourth lowest in the country among schools which have been D-I for four or more years. HERE S SOMETHING FROM MARY Sophomore setter Mary Chaudoin will be the host of her very own weekly video blog during the 2009 season. The Here s Something From Mary video blog will run throughout the season with a new episode posted every Monday, taking IU fans inside the world of IU Volleyball. ALWAYS IN THE KNOW Hoosier fans can follow their volleyball team like never before by logging on to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The volleyball team has their very own Twitter account (IUVolleyball) while information on all of IU Athletics can be found on Facebook (Indiana University Athletics) and YouTube (IUAthletics).
