SAUL BALL BEGINS WITH WIN The Bobcats defeated Appalachian State, 73-47, on Nov. 15 in the 2014-15 season opener at the Convocation Center. The win marked the first under first-year head coach Saul Phillips. NOT BAD, ROOK Freshman guard Ryan Taylor (Gary, Ind.) totaled a game-high 21 points and distributed a game-high four assists in his collegiate debut to help lead Ohio to victory over the Mountaineers. Taylor, who started his first game for the Bobcats, shot 9-of-13 from the field -- including 3-of-5 from three-point land. His outing marked the first time a Bobcat scored at least 20 points in his first career game since Ivo Baltic put up 20 against Ohio Valley in 2009. Taylor garnered College Sports Madness Mid-American Conference Player of the Week recognition for his efforts. Taylor achieved double figures for the second time in his first four collegiate games, scoring 16 points off of 7-of-10 shooting in addition to hauling in five rebounds and distributing two assists against Belmont. Taylor reached double digits in points once again against St. Bonaventure, posting 11 to go along with five rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots to lead the Cats. Taylor, who has started six of the seven games he s played, is averaging 10.4points for the Bobcats in 2014-15. Taylor completed a prep year at St. John s Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wis. The Michigan City, Ind., native averaged 23 points, six rebounds and three assists per game for the Lancers in 2013-14. As a senior at Michigan City High School, Taylor averaged 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.6 steals per game and was selected to participate in Indiana s Northwest All-Star Classic for his efforts. He played his AAU ball for SYF Players in Gary, Ind. THE STEVIE SHOW Senior guard Stevie Taylor (Gahanna, Ohio) added a season-high 17 points and dished out a season-high five assists in addition to grabbing a career-high six rebounds to lead the Cats against Belmont. He reached double figures for the first time this season. Taylor reached double figures for the second time in three games and 17th in his career, scoring 10 points against Alcorn State. Taylor posted double figures for the third time in four games, tallying 10 points to go along with a game-high three steals as well as four rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes off of the bench at Evansville. Taylor, who is the lone holdover from Ohio s 2012 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team, saw action in 36 of 37 games in 2013-14, starting 24. He averaged 7.2 points and ranked second on the team with 2.4 assists per game. Taylor also ranked third on the team with 37 steals. He led Ohio in assists in 12 contests and notched 10-plus points in eight contests. SHUFFLING THE LINEUP Ohio has used five different starting lineup combinations through eight games thus far in 2014-15. The Bobcats three victories have involved three different starting lineup combinations. #SAULBALL The Bobcats enter a new era in 2014-15 under Phillips, who led North Dakota State to 26 wins and a berth in the NCAA Championship last season. NDSU s run was highlighted by the No. 12-seeded Bison knocking off No. 5-seeded Oklahoma in the Second Round. Phillips spent seven seasons as the head men s basketball coach at North Dakota State. He was hired as the 22nd coach in program history on March 26, 2007. Phillips directed North Dakota State to its first Summit League championship and NCAA Championship appearance in 2009. He was one of 10 finalists for the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. During his seven seasons at NDSU, Phillips posted a 134-84 record through his seven seasons as a collegiate head coach, including a 75-45 mark in The Summit League. A native of Reedsburg, Wis., Phillips graduated from Wisconsin- Platteville with a degree in business and psychology in 1996. He played basketball for four seasons at UWP under current Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan and was captain of the Pioneers undefeated national championship team in 1995. championship team in 1995. LIFTING THE LID The Bobcats are now 73-35 (.676) all-time in season openers and have won their last 11, all of which have been played inside the Convocation Center. PROTECT THIS HOUSE Ohio has registered an impressive 440-137 (.763) all-time record at the Convocation Center, which opened in 1968. The Bobcats have led the Mid-American Conference in attendance in seven of the past eight seasons. A LOOK BACK AT 2013-14 Ohio is coming off a 25-17 campaign in 2013-14 in which it reached the 20-win plateau for the third-straight season, tied for the second-most wins in program history and posted two victories in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in the program s fifthconsecutive postseason appearance. Over the past three seasons, the Bobcats have set a program record with 78 combined victories (25 in 2013-14; 24 in 2012-13; 29 in 2011-12). The team also has posted at least 22 wins in three-straight seasons for the first time in program history. GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER Continuity proved to be key is the assembly of Phillips Ohio coaching staff. Assistant coaches Will Ryan and Jason Kemp and director of basketball operations Jared Swanson all served under Phillips at North Dakota State. Two familiar faces to Bobcat fans will be on the sideline for Ohio in 2014-15. Aaron Fuss begins his third season as an assistant coach at Ohio while former two-year team captain David McKinley enters his first season as a graduate assistant. Rounding out the Ohio coaching staff is former Hillsdale College standout Brandon Pritzl, who will serve as a graduate assistant for the Cats. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS Ohio has been picked to finish second in the MAC East Division and received two first-place votes in the conference s 2014-15 preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Oct. 28. The Bobcats garnered 92 points, finishing behind Akron, which received 117 points and 17 first-place votes. Oho earned one vote to win the 2015 MAC Tournament title.
