Coreen had a superb year going through the season undefeated to capture the club s 12th premiership. Under new coach Graeme Hansen, the side was dominated throughout the home and away winning by an average of 52 points before going onto collect the premiership against Corowa/Rutherglen by 19 points. In the first season of the Reserves under coach Graeme Hansen the team struggle all season and fail to register a win for the year. Congratulations to our Best & Fairest winners in Les Payne (Seniors) and Barry Bruce (Reserves). The club also had successful at the league vote count with Neville Tait winning the Archie Dennis Medal for the Senior Best & Fairest. Richard Sargood also won the league goal kicking. A big thanks to the hard working ladies auxiliary, our sponsors and trophy donors for their continual support.

CLASSY COREEN Coreen 15.16.106 defeated Cor/R glen 13.9.87 Super Swans down Roos Coreen won its 12 th Coreen League grand final at Oaklands on Saturday but the favourites did not have it all their own way. For three quarters the Coreen players were rushed and bustled off their normal game by a determined Corowa- Rutherglen. But as so often happened this year the talented Coreen was given the chance when the Roos eased the pressure and they took full advantage. This was the second term when the Swans slammed on 8.4 to a solitary behind by Corowa-Rutherglen. This was real grand finals football. Coreen moved the ball around to perfection as they ran rings around the Roos. The man to set Coreen alight was Billy Phibbs. His raking pass to Sargood which brought up the first goal of the term was a gem, and minutes later another pass went straight to Sid Bedford who made no mistake. From here on it was a procession, and the Roos had no answer. At half time Coreen led 10.7 to 2.6, and the game looked like being a mere formality. However, Roger Mathews and his charges had other ideas. It was as if a different team had come into the ground for the Roos in the third term. As in the first term the Roos used their pace to advantage, and their hard tackling kept Coreen from getting a run on. A quick goal to Greg Hennessy, who had taken over at full forward, lifted the Roos as they banged on five goals to Coreen s one. Not to be denied Coreen went forward where Neville Tait booted home a beautiful 50 yard goal. Another to Sargood seconds later and Coreen had regained their composure. At the last change Coreen still led comfortably 13.9 to 8.8, but the Roos had shown the unbeaten side could be tamed. The final term saw Corowa-Rutherglen throw everything at Coreen in a last ditch attempt for glory. Hennessy at the spearhead kicked his fifth, followed quickly by his sixth, and then his seventh, and the Roos supporters sensed the chance of an upset. With time running out the Roos tried everything, but Coreen held firm and finally ran out winners 15.16 to 13.9. The win was well deserved by Coreen. They have set the pace this year, being unbeaten in all matches. The fact they were outscored in three of the four terms of the grand final is of little consequence. While the Roos tackled hard, and kept on running, Coreen always seemed to have the class players to answer the challenge. The award for man of the match went to Corowa-Rutherglen s Mick Lloyd, with Roger Mathews being judged second best. The irony of this was not lost on Mathews who said it was significant that the Roos had the two best players on the ground, but the Coreen team had the premiership.
