INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #106 / Road Game #53 Indianapolis Indians (54-51) at Syracuse Chiefs (54-50) Wednesday, July 28, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 7:00 p.m. EDT Alliance Bank Stadium -- Syracuse, N.Y. Indians RHP Mike Crotta (5-5, 5.00 ERA) vs. Chiefs RHP Jason Marquis (NR) --- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Mike Crotta, snapped a personal seven start winless streak with a victory over the Charlotte Knights in his last outing... On July 23, Crotta allowed five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, but the right-hander was helped out by the Indianapolis offense as the Tribe earned a 17-11 victory... Prior to his five-run appearance against Charlotte, Crotta had pitched well in the month of July, as the right-hander posted a 2.70 ERA (5 ER) in 16.2 innings of work over three starts... On the road, the Fort Lauderdale native has posted a 2-1 record and a respectable 3.73 ERA (17 ER on 50 hits in 41.0 IP) in eight starts, while, when pitching at home this season, the right-hander has gone 3-4 with a 6.15 ERA (31 ER on 62 hits in 45.1 IP) in eight starts... From a batting average against standpoint, the right-hander has limited opposing batters to a.186 average (21-for-113) with five extra-base hits when he s ahead in the count, but has allowed batters to hit.341 (31-for-91) with 15 extra-base hits when he s behind in the count... Crotta has struggled with runners on base this season, allowing a.353 average (55-for-156) with men on, a.339 average (21-for-62) with runners on with two outs, a.311 average (32-for-103) with runners in scoring position and a.304 average (14-for-46) with runners in scoring position with two outs... Crotta has yet to face the Syracuse Chiefs in his professional baseball career. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Crotta in tonight s contest is Chiefs starter Jason Marquis, who has appeared in one game for three different Washington Nationals minor league affiliates and has also pitched at the Major League level for the Nats already this season... In his most recent start, a July 23 outing for Double-A Harrisburg, Marquis allowed three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work against the Portland Sea Dogs in a 7-5 Senators win... In the first start of his current rehabilitation stint (his start on July 23 was the second), a July 18 appearance for the Gulf Coast League Nationals, Marquis held the GCL Astros scoreless over three innings of work and allowed only two hits, while striking out four batters... Marquis started the season with the Nationals, and, in three starts at the Major League level, posted a 0-3 record and a 20.52 ERA (19) while allowed 18 hits and six walks in 8.1 innings of work... The Major League veteran, who has pitched for the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals, was placed on the disabled list on April 19 with a right elbow injury... Marquis signed a two-year deal with Nationals on December 22, 2009... The right-hander last faced the Indianapolis Indians in 2003 when he was a member of the Richmond Braves and posted a 1-1 record and a 7.63 ERA (13 ER in 15.1 IP). ALEX PRESLEY HAS ENTERED THE BUILDING: Following his three hit outing against the Syracuse Chiefs in last night s contest, Indians OF Alex Presley is now tied for the ninth-most hits (127) in all of Minor League Baseball this season... Presley s 127 hits between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis would also put him in a third place tie with Seattle Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki at the Major League level... Presley has also turned in the ninth-best batting average (.349) in all of Minor League Baseball thus far this season... Since joining the Indians on June 25, Presley has hit.347 (41-for-118) with 24 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, four home runs, 14 RBI and a.398 on-base percentage. MOSS CONTINUES TO MASH: With his three RBI effort in last night s contest against the Syracuse Chiefs, Tribe OF Brandon Moss propelled himself into second place in the International League in runs driven in with 66 on the season... The Indians left-handed slugger moved past both Toledo Mud Hens INF Jeff Frazier and Norfolk Tides INF Robert Andino - who both have collected 64 RBI on the season for second in the IL in runs driven in, behind only Durham Bulls INF Dan Johnson s astounding 91 RBI... Since Moss hot streak began on July 6, during which time he has reached base safely via a hit or a walk in 17 of 18 contests, the Georgia native leads the International League with 23 RBI and has hit.370 (27-for-73) with 16 runs scored, seven doubles and six home runs... The Indians outfielder has also been one of the most consistent contributors for the Tribe offense this season, and, among current players, he leads the team in games played (97), at-bats (353), runs scored (53), hits (94), doubles (23), home runs (16), RBI (66), total bases (167) and stolen bases (8). AKI TO SUCCESS: After hitting only.182 (30-for-165) with two home runs and nine RBI in 54 games for Pittsburgh Pirates, Indians INF Akinori Iwamura was designated for assignment by the Pirates on June 16 and was then optioned to Indianapolis on June 23... Since arriving in Indianapolis on June 27, Iwamura has reached base safely via a hit or a walk in 24 of his 26 games played with the Tribe and has recorded at least one base knock in 18 of those contests... One of the two games in which Iwamura did not reach safely came on July 20, when the infielder made a pinch-hit appearance in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs... Overall, Iwamura has posted a.291 batting average (25-for-86) with 15 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, 23 walks and a.445 in-base percentage... Iwamura has also performed well in the clutch in his limited action with the Indians, as the infielder has hit.333 (15-for-45) with runners on,.346 (9-for-26) with runners in scoring position and.375 (3-for-8) with runners in scoring position with two outs. FRESH FACE: With a roster spot available following the promotion of RHP Steven Jackson to the Pittsburgh Pirates, RHP Travis Chick, who began the 2010 season with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League, has been signed to a minor league contract and has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis... In 14 games (12 starts) for the Riversharks this season, Chick posted a 5-4 record and a 4.40 ERA (29 ER on 62 hits) in 59.1 innings of work... Chick was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 14th round of the 2002 draft and, after spending two and a half seasons in the Marlins organization, Chick was traded to the San Diego Padres, who subsequently packaged him and RHP Justin Germano in a deal to the Cincinnati Reds for INF Joe Randa on July 23, 2005... The right-hander was again involved in another trade on July 6, 2006 when he was acquired by the Seattle Mariners organization in exchange for LHP Eddie Guardado and cash considerations... Chick last appeared in a minor league contest in 2009 when he appeared in 23 games (21 starts) and posted an 8-7 record to go along with a 4.22 ERA (53 ER in 113.0 IP) for the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts... Chick made a brief stint at the Major League level for the Seattle Mariners in 2006 and recorded a 12.60 ERA (7 ER on 7 hits in 5.0 IP) in three contests. WORKING 8-TO-5: Each of the last three Indians victories have come by way of an 8-5 score over their opponent... In each those contests July 24 and 26 against the Charlotte Knights and July 27 against the Syracuse Chiefs the Indians have reached double digit hit totals (11, 13, 14), have hit one home run (with two of them coming in the seventh inning) and scored multiple runs in only two innings... The Indians have also faced an early deficit 2-0 on July 24, 1-0 on July 26 and 2-0 on July 27 in each contest as well.
