Brothers, From the Grand Knight As I sit and look out my window, it s hard to believe that spring is finally here! According to the weather reports, warmer days are ahead and hopefully better weather. Spring is a time of new beginnings, new arrivals and of new life. As we prepare for Easter and the Lords return, take a moment to give thanks for all that you have. This season, there have been so many births for friends and family that I am reminded what a truly joyous season this is. Our annual fish fry was held on Fed 20 th. It was well received and many compliments were given on the fish. Thank you to all the brothers who helped set up, served and helped take down tables for the event. Together, we served roughly 160 people with plenty to go around. Thank you to the scouts for the desserts and Mrs. Pagorick for the prep and help that she does every year. We also hosted the 2 nd round of the Free Throw Contest for the district. Br. Gregg Blocher, once again, did an outstanding job heading up the event. Thanks to all who helped with the Free Throw contest, and above all, congratulations to the winners for District 2. This month also begins 40 Days for Life. Knights from councils in the area will be standing vigil and praying outside Planned Parenthood in Merrillville during this time. Praying for the unborn children and putting a stop to the tragedy of abortion. Our Council has been asked to stand on the hill on March 14 th for a few hours, if you have time available please join us. Recently I received an email from Fr. Mike that went out to all of the ministry leaders in the parish, asking for help with the capital campaign. I am seeking 3 March 2015 volunteers from our council to work with Fr. Mike and the campaign director Joe Smagacz in raising funds for the parish. If you are interested, please contact me via e mail or see me after our regular meeting. I am also seeking ideas from the council to do some sort of fund raiser to aid the parish in the endeavor. As knights, we are pledged to help the priests, and we have been asked to help in some way, shape or form. So please, let s get to work. FACEBOOK Vivat Jesus, Grand Knight, Rich The Indiana has two (2) Facebook pages. Below are links to both. The first is the Official State Council Facebook page. This page will have information directly from the Indiana State Council. The second is a group Facebook page that was established by the Indiana State Council Knights of Columbus as an open forum in sharing information directly related to Indiana and Knights community. If you're asking what now? Here is what you do: Like the Official Facebook Page and become a member of the Official Group Page. It's that simple. PRAYER FOR THE SUCCESS OF OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Loving Father, we recognize that all good things come from You. We know that You have given us an abundance of gifts, not to hoard but to share. As we engage in our capital campaign, we ask You to bless our endeavors. Help us to remember that the reason we exist is to point the way to You. You have blessed us personally, You have blessed our families, You have blessed our parish. Help us to use those many blessings to improve our church and school buildings so that St. Thomas More may continue to make a difference in our lives, in our community, and in our world. Kindly bless our campaign and make it successful for we place our trust in You. As the psalmist of old once wrote, Prosper the work of our hands for us. Prosper the word of our hands. Amen The RESULTS for the 72nd Annual State Bowling Tournament are attached to this month s newsletter. Congratulations to all the winners. I hope everyone had lots of fun! Check our Council Web Site http://www.kofc10596.com/ and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ groups/452286081543848/ for updates. From the Chaplain LENT IS HERE WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Remember, the laws of Fast and Abstinence apply for the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. To refresh your memory, they are as follows: Fast: Allows for only one full meal to be taken during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength according to one's needs. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age through to those who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. Abstinence: The practice of refraining from meat and meat products. Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older. Fridays of Lent are Days of Abstinence Taizé Prayer will take place on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. This prayer takes about a half hour and is a blend of scripture, music, and silence. It is very peaceful and a great way to reflect upon God s love. Stations of the Cross are Fridays at 7:00 p.m. The school students also do Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 2:15 p.m. (except on March 27th. There are no afternoon Stations on March 27th due to Spring Break). Living Stations of the Cross will be done by our parish Youth Group on Friday, March 13th at 7:00 p.m. Our Parish Penance Service will be on Tuesday, March 17th at 7:00 p.m. The school children will have an opportunity to go to confession that morning beginning immediately after the 8:30 a.m. school Mass. Any parishioner is free to come to confession during the morning as well. There will be several Carmelite Fathers helping Fr. Ted and me during the morning confessions.
