UPCOMING MILESTONES AND CURRENT NOTES With the 2015 season underway for the Dallas Cowboys, the following information pertains to the most current notes and page location in the release for the remainder of the information, as well as upcoming milestones: 2015 DALLAS COWBOYS UPCOMING MILESTONES: Team * A win at New Orleans (10/4) would be Dallas 11th consecutive win on the road dating back to the 2013 season at Washington (12/22), to establish a team record and tie for the third-longest streak in NFL history. The 1968-69 and 2006-07 Dallas teams previously tied for the longest streak in team history (page 1). Jason Garrett - Head Coach * With a victory in this week s game, Head Coach Jason Garrett (currently at 43-32) will earn his 44th career regular season win. He needs two wins to surpass Jimmy Johnson (44) for the second-most regular season head coaching wins in team history (page 4). Sean Lee - LB * By playing at New Orleans (10/4), Sean Lee will be participating in his 50th career game. Jason Witten - TE * By starting at New Orleans (10/4), Jason Witten will be making his 135th consecutive start (12/16/06-10/4/15) to tie Bob Lilly (1965-74) and D.D. Lewis (1972-81) for the third-longest streak in team history (page 16). * Witten (10,683) needs 34 yards to surpass Stanley Morgan (10,716) for 33rd on the NFL s all-time receiving yards list. * Witten (59) needs two touchdown receptions to pass Jerry Smith (60) for fourth on the league s all-time receiving touchdowns list amongst tight ends. 2015 DALLAS COWBOYS MOST RECENT NOTES - TEAM: * The Dallas Cowboys rushing attack accumulated 131 rush yards in the first half against Atlanta (9/27) to mark the ninth-most rushing yards in a first half by a Cowboys team since 1991 (page 21). * The Cowboys rushing attack produced four rushing touchdowns (three by Joseph Randle; one by Darren McFadden) in the first half against Atlanta (9/27/15) to mark the second time in franchise history that has happened in the first half. In total, it is only the second time in team history the team has rushed for four touchdowns in either the first or second half as it was also done in the first half on 12/1/63 vs. N.Y. Giants (page 21). * The Cowboys offense also tallied nine rushing first downs in the first half to tie the most in team history in a first half (page 21). 2015 DALLAS COWBOYS MOST RECENT NOTES - INDIVIDUAL: Lance Dunbar - RB * Lance Dunbar led the team with a career-high 10 catches for a career-high 100 receiving yards against Atlanta (9/27). He became the 14th running back in team history to post 100 receiving yards - the 14th-highest team total all-time at the position - and it was the first time since Marion Barber had 128 at Arizona (10/12/08) (page 22). * Through the first three games of the 2015 NFL season, Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar leads the offense with 215 receiving yards and is tied for the team lead with 21 receptions. It is only the third time in team history that a running back has led or tied for the lead in receiving yards after the first three games of a season (page 22). * Dunbar leads all NFL running backs in receptions and receiving yards early in 2015 (page 22). Sean Lee - LB * Sean Lee had a team-high 11 tackles against Atlanta (9/27) to surpass 400 tackles (410) for his career while also notching his first career sack (page 24). He also became the 10th player in team history to score three touchdowns in a game, the 19th time overall that has happened (page 22). * Randle s three scores came in the first half to mark the third player in team history to total three rushing touchdowns in a first half in team history, joining Don Perkins (vs. N.Y. Giants, 12/1/63) and Ron Springs (vs. St. Louis, 9/13/81) (page 22). * Randle s three rushing touchdowns in the first half marked the first time this has happened in the NFL since Russell Wilson had three at Buffalo (12/16/12) (page 22). * Randle had five rushing first downs in the first quarter, the second-most rushing first downs in a first quarter in team history, since 1991 (page 22). Brandon Weeden - QB * Brandon Weeden was perfect on each of his first nine passes against Atlanta (9/27) before his 10th attempt was intercepted to establish a team record with 21 consecutive completions, surpassing Tony Romo s previous record of 17. JASON GARRETT (44-33, 5th Year) Jason Garrett was named the eighth head coach in Dallas Cowboys history on January 5, 2011. Garrett became the first former Dallas Cowboys player to become the team s head coach. As a backup quarterback during his playing career in Dallas, he started nine-of-23 games played and was a member of teams that won six division titles and three Super Bowl championships. Garrett guided the 2014 squad to an NFLbest tying 12-4 record, the club s 22nd Division title - 18th NFC East title - 31st postseason appearance and 34th playoff win. Along the way, the team had three players lead the league and establish single-season club records as DeMarco Murray rushed for 1,845 yards, Dez Bryant caught 16 touchdown passes and Tony Romo completed 69.9% of his passes and had a 113.2 quarterback rating. The Dallas offense as a whole was second in the league in rushing yards (2,354), it s highest finish since placing second in 2008. For the season, the Dallas offense totaled 6,138 yards for the second-highest figure in franchise history. The club also had eight players selected to the Pro Bowl, and following the season, Garrett was rewarded for the team s accomplishments with a five-year contract extension. Garrett was elevated to the Cowboys top job after taking over as the team s interim head coach midway through 2010. He guided the club to a 5-3 mark to finish the season after the team started 1-7. He led Dallas to an 8-8 record, narrowly missing the playoffs and an NFC East Division title in each his first three full seasons as head coach (2011-13). Since the 2007 season, when Garrett was brought on board as the Cowboys offensive coordinator, the unit finished among the NFL s top-10 in total offense in five of his seven years at the helm: 2013 (10th), 2012 (6th), 2010 (10th), 2009 (2nd) and 2007 (2nd). The team has set single-season records in a handful of categories, including topping 6,000 net yards for the first times in franchise history (2009-6,390 and 2011-6,008). Since his arrival in 2007, not only has the team set single-season records in numerous offensive categories, but the club s cumulative numbers for gross passing yards (33,247) and total points (3,250) represent the best totals over a eight-year span in the history of the organization while the club s 47,615 total net yards are second. He earned unanimous NFL Coach of the Year honors in his first season in 2006 and received the same honors from several outlets in 2009. Considered one of the NFL s brightest offensive minds, the Saints have ranked among the league s top-10 offenses each season since his arrival, including finishing first in the NFL in 2014, 2011, 2009, 2008 and 2006, putting up an NFL-record 7,474 net yards in 2011. Defensively, the Saints ranked fourth in the league in 2010 and 2013. With the Dallas Cowboys (2003-05), he served as the assistant head coach/passing game coordinator in 2005 after spending his first two seasons as assistant head coach/quarterbacks. Payton coached four years with the New York Giants (1999-2002), the last three seasons as offensive coordinator, and was quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles (1997-98). He earned a degree in communications at Eastern Illinois, where he departed with a school-record 10,665 passing yards, then the third-highest total in NCAA Division I-AA history. A three-time All-American, Payton had brief playing stops with Chicago of the Arena League, the CFL s Ottawa Rough Riders and the Chicago Bears in 1987. Payton coached collegiately at San Diego State (1988-89, 1992-93), Indiana State (1990-91), Miami (Ohio) in 1994-95, and Illinois (1996). A WINNING TREND The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2015 season as one-of-12 teams in the league with at least 475 regular season wins. At the end of Week 16 in 2014, Dallas became just the 12th team with 475 all-time wins with the win against Indianapolis (12/21). WINNING HEAD COACH Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett had his best season as a head coach by wrapping up the 2014 regular season with a record of 12-4 - the fifth coach to reach 12 wins-or-better in a season in team history. He also secured his first NFC East Division title as the head coach. Against the N.Y. Giants (10/19/14), Garrett passed former head coaches Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips (both with 34) with his 35th regular season win as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys to place fourth in team history. He passed Barry Switzer (40) for third with his 41st victory at Washington (12/28/14). After starting 2-1 in 2015, Garrett s current regular season record as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys stands at 43-32, good for third all-time in team history: Most Regular Season Wins by a Cowboys Head Coach Coach Years Won Loss Tied Pct Tom Landry... 1960-88 250 162 6.605 Jimmy Johnson... 1989-93 44 36 0.550 Jason Garrett*... 2010-15 43 32 0.573 Barry Switzer... 1994-97 40 24 0.625 Bill Parcells... 2003-06 34 30 0.531 Wade Phillips... 2007-10 34 22 0.607 Chan Gailey... 1998-99 18 14 0.563 Dave Campo... 2000-02 15 33 0.313 *Record under Coach Garrett includes games as interim head coach in 2010 (5-3). WINNING THE CLOSE ONES The Dallas Cowboys are finding a knack to win in close games under Head Coach Jason Garrett. Dallas opened the 2015 season with a comeback win against the N.Y. Giants (9/13), finishing the Giants off with a 27-26 decision. The Cowboys found ways to finish and win games in 2014, especially the close ones. The team was 4-1 in games decided by seven-or-fewer points and 3-1 in games decided by three-or-fewer points. Overall, the team is 25-19 in games decided by seven points-or-less, and 17-13 in games decided by three points-or-less, since Garrett took over the team: Win-Loss Record by Cowboys In Close Games Since 2010* Year 3-or-Fewer 7-or-Fewer 2015 1-0 1-0 2014 3-1 4-1 2013 3-5 6-5 2012 3-2 7-5 2011 4-2 4-5 2010* 3-3 3-3 Totals 17-13 25-19 The winning trend also extended into overtime games, as the Cowboys are 6-3 in contests that go into extra time under Coach Garrett since 2010. Joseph Randle led the way for the offense, exploding through cratering holes in the Atlanta defensive line on the first drive to the tune of 65 yards on only two carries, finishing with a 37-yard touchdown gallop where he broke multiple tackles. Randle found pay dirt again on the Cowboys next drive, capping off an eight-play, 77-yard drive with a one-yard burst into the endzone. Randle finished with 91 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone. The 91 rushing yards tied for the third-most in the first quarter in team history since 1991. The Falcons answered with a touchdown rush of their own by Devonta Freeman on the ensuing drive, but after punts by both teams, Dallas capped another impressive drive with a Darren McFadden two-yard plunge into the endzone. Earlier in the drive, Brandon Weeden completed his ninth straight pass to start the game, continuing a streak of 21 consecutive completions dating back to 2014. The 21 straight completions marked a Cowboys franchise record. Atlanta capitalized on a Dallas turnover and garnered another Freeman rushing score as a result. After Dallas added Randle s third rushing touchdown of the first half, again from one-yard out, Atlanta drove 66 yards in six plays to end a wild first half with a field goal, making the halftime score 28-17. For all of the Cowboys offensive prowess in the first half, they were not able to get the ground game rolling in the second half, losing four yards across the two periods. Atlanta turned the tables and utilized the ground game against the Dallas defense, and scored 22 unanswered points while eating 20:07 off the game clock and keeping the ball away from the Cowboys offense. Matt Ryan threw two touchdown passes to Julio Jones and DeVonta Freeman scored the go-ahead touchdown on a seven-yard run in the fourth quarter. NEW ORLEANS LAST GAME The New Orleans Saints fell to 0-3 on the season following a 27-22 road loss to the Carolina Panthers. New Orleans took the first lead of the game with a 31-yard Zach Hocker field goal in the first quarter. The Saints followed that up with a five-yard Mark Ingram rushing touchdown in the second quarter that increased their lead to 10-0. However, Carolina tied the game at 10-10 after two scores in the second quarter that included a Greg Olsen 11- yard touchdown catch from Cam Newton and a Graham Gano 20-yard field goal. New Orleans re-took the lead 16-10 in the third quarter on a 74-yard punt return touchdown by Marcus Murphy (kick aborted). The Panthers responded with 17 unanswered points that included another Newton-to-Olsen touchdown connection (11 yards), and a Gano 47-yard field goal in the third quarter and a Newton 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put them ahead 27-16. The Saints attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Khiry Robinson plunged in the endzone for a two-yard rushing score (pass failed) that cut the lead to 27-22, but Carolina was able to hold on for the victory. 4
