EIU opened the season at No. 15 Indiana on Friday in the toughest season opening game in school history. Eastern Illinois has started the season with a 1-1 record in two of head coach Jay Spoonhour s three seasons and in three of the last four years. This marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that EIU has opened with its first two games on the road. That year EIU opened with three games at the Iowa State Tournament. ONE OF THE NEWEST ROSTERS IN THE NCAA Eastern Illinois opened the season with one of the newest rosters in the NCAA. The Panthers are tied for seventh in the nation with the most newcomers on the roster entering year. EIU has nine new faces with six freshmen, two junior college transfers and one four-year transfer. Portland State, Tennessee State and Bradley lead the nation with 11 newcomers on their rosters for this season. EIU MAKES THIRD POSTSEASON NCAA DIVISION I APPEARANCE Eastern Illinois played in the 2015 CollegeInsiders.com Tournament to end the season as the Panthers lost to eventual champion Evansville in the second round. It was EIU s first postseason appearance since the 2001 NCAA Tournament and third ever as an NCAA Division I school. EIU beat Oakland in the opening round to post the school s first NCAA Division I postseason victory. PANTHERS SIGN KANSAS ALL-STATE GUARD Eastern Illinois men s basketball signed one player during the early signing period last Wednesday with Kansas All-State guard Logan Koch. Koch averaged 14.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists last year at Mill Valley HS in Shawnee, Kan. Spoonhour was previously the head coach at Moberly Area Community College where he coached for three seasons. He is a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in 1994. He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is 146-88; 46-60 at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is 40-56 with an OVC mark of 22-26. Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a 97-91 win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Eastern Illinois played its toughest season opening game in school history as the Panthers played at No. 15 Indiana on Friday night. The Panthers took a 3-2 lead before the Hoosiers pulled away over the final eight minutes of the first half. Indiana used its size advantage finishing with a 51-17 advantage on the glass limiting EIU to only six first half rebounds. Indiana won 88-49. A.J. Riley and Trae Anderson scored in double figures for EIU. SCOUTING BALL STATE Ball State is coached by James Whitford in his third season. The Cardinals lost their season opener on Friday, dropping a 54-53 game at Bradley. Naiel Smith, Jeremiah Davis and Bo Calhoun all finished with a team high eight points as BSU shot 36 percent from the floor. Calhoun led Ball State with nine rebounds. Sophomore wing Sean Sellers is the team s top returning scorer from last season earning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 averaging 12 points per game. BSU leads the all-time series 16-5. The Panthers snapped a long losing streak to Ball State that dated back to 1966 with a win last season in Lantz Arena. Riley led the Panthers in scoring with 13 points during the season opener at Indiana. Riley also led EIU in rebounding pulling down five with one on the offensive glass. In the Panthers lone exhibition game Riley scored 13 points with seven rebounds and six assists in a win over Saint Francis (Ill.). Casey Teson knocked down a school record 224 3-pointers at St. Charles HS. In his first collegiate game Teson started his own Eastern Illinois total as he was 2-of-7 from 3-point range with six points, one rebound and two assists. Senior Trae Anderson finished with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting in the season opener at Indiana. Last season Anderson led EIU in scoring at 13.2 points per game shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. It was Anderson s 22nd career double figure scoring game and seventh straight double figure game dating back to last season. Cornell Johnston set the EIU single season 3-point field goal percentage record last season knocking down 55-of-106 for 51.9 percent. Johnston opened the season at Indiana going 1-of-2 from behind the arc finishing with five points and two assists. Johnston was the OVC Freshman of the Year last season averaging 9.1 points and 4.7 assists per game. EIU was limited to just six rebounds in the first half and 17 for the game in the opener at Indiana. Last season EIU was 11th in the OVC in rebounding margin with a -5.5 rebound margin for the season. Trae Anderson is the Panthers top returning rebounder from last season at 4.9 rebounds per game. Head coach Jay Spoonhour used the Panthers bench during the season opener at No. 15 Indiana as 14 of the 15 players in uniform saw action. The Panthers finished with nine points off the bench with Marshawn Blackmon scoring four, Luke Piotrowski three and Joe Kuligoski adding two. Last season EIU averaged 26.2 points per game off the bench. EIU has six freshmen on its 2015-16 roster with All-State players Marshawn Blackmon, Lucas Jones, Patrick Muldoon and Casey Teson. EIU is ranked 10th in the nation for most freshmen on a roster opening the season. UTEP, Cornell and Wisconsin are tied for first with eight freshmen players. Teson and Muldoon started the season opener at Indiana. Eastern Illinois was held without a blocked shot in the season opener at Indiana on Friday. It ended a streak of 37 straight games with at least one block by an EIU player. The last time EIU did not block a shot in a game was Feb. 15, 2014 at Murray State. EIU averaged 4.3 blocks per game last season ranking third in the OVC. Luke Piotrowski is the Panthers top returning shot blocker with 31 last season.
