````````````````````````` Page 1 of 100 A I S C FROM THE HELM Commodore Charlie Hayes Spring is around the corner. Keep saying it! I ve cleaned the bottom of the boat, polished the fuel, repaired the sails, electronics still need some work. And yep, I m about to get her off the hard. Fortunately, I didn t have to brush any snow away. At this point, am I supposed to say pontoon boat? Hey, my pontoon boat goes on the water and I try and keep the shiny side down. I did clean the bottom of the boat.with a water hose; Polished the fuel by using the last of it in the lawn mower (smokes a bit, but); Sail..well that was the Bimini cover to keep everyone out of the sun; Electronics.still have to buy batteries at the store; Gotta fix the depth gauge.lost the rock and rope I had been using; The hard.i bought a NEW AL++ trailer in Panama City. So.all in all, I m ready to go play this year. Are you? As I mentioned at the first meeting. I m a Native Floridian. We re hard to spot among all the invaders coming in and taking over from up North. So, on a somber and educational note, water is critical to our lives, our hobbies, and our futures. Please take 30 minutes to view this video. It s entertaining, informative and scary. What we don t know may well kill us. How and where we dispose of our waste is an eyeopener. Water's Journey: The River Returns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diakmrtncaa See you at March s meeting! 1
Vice Commodore Tom Maguire JAXPORT Tours. We were able to gain a little insight into the products moving into and out of JAXPORT during one of their monthly tours on 16 February. Several club members (and, some new recruits!) went on the tour that is available on the third Thursday of each month. As with most large scale industrial activities, the size of the equipment used and quantity of goods were impressive. Their new 100 gage cranes (100 feet between uprights) that just started operating in December can reach 22 containers across a ship s deck, minimizing (or, maybe eliminating?) the need to turn the ship around at the dock for unloading. Currently three of these behemoths are installed and operating and plans are to add seven more over the next ten years. There are lots of interesting facts, pictures and videos of the port facility and operations there at their website: https://www.jaxport.com/ Everybody know what the term breakbulk refers to? Me neither, until I looked at this website. Not sure these answers will help while watching Jeopardy but the port handled over 600,000 vehicles last year, imported over 28 million pounds of playing cards and, oh yeah, exported the equivalent of 17 million 12-packs of beer! Rear Commodore Ed Spang The web site is currently under construction and is being built on software from Wild Apricot Membership Software. And in fact, it is currently being hosted at: //ameliaislandsailingclub.wildapricot.org by Wild Apricot. Wild Apricot is a proven software base for membership management. 2
It is somewhat like a 'Legos' approach for our club in that Wild Apricot provides and maintains the software base and then we as a club tie the blocks together to meet our needs. Long term the software is maintained for easier transition among members with software support/help available from Wild Apricot. Landside Darlene Spang The theme for March will be Irish for St. Patrick's Day. A big thank you to Charlie for having the club provide last month's food and to Janet Maguire for taking care of all the details for a great meal. There were some very happy fire fighters later that night when they accepted the leftovers. The socials this year will follow along with the way food was assigned last year by dividing the member list in half. This month: Ballard through Mooney please bring a main dish. Murphy through Zachary please bring a side dish or a dessert. If you bring a dish that needs serving utensils, please bring the utensils. Here are a few examples of dishes for this month's theme, but remember that these are only examples: Main dishes: corn beef, meat shepherd s pie or Irish stew Side dishes: any potato dish, broccoli or stuffed cabbage, Irish soda bread, vegetable shepherd s pie, or any green dishes you have in your recipe box Desserts: cakes, cupcakes or cookies with green frosting Hope to see everyone at the March meeting. Christmas/Holiday Party Leslie Ritter Please mark your calendars for Friday, December 8, 2017. Tentatively, same time and same place - Fernandina Beach Golf Club. I am still percolating a couple of the PHRF ratings, but these will be ready by race day. My boat may not be racing due to some shaft repairs and my upcoming foot surgery, but we expect a good turnout. If you wish to volunteer for crew duty, give me a call at 904-556-3988, and I will try to get you aboard a boat, Let s be Safe and have fun. 2017 Amelia Island Sailing Race Schedule: March-June; First Saturdays of each Month 1) March 4 th Start time 1200 2) April 1 st Start time 1200 3) May 6 th Start time 1000 4) June 3 rd Start time 1000 6
Past Commodore Steve Ritter I would like to thank everyone for all of your hard work and participation last year that made 2016 so fun for the club. I know that 2017 will be amazing with Charlie as Commodore and such a great slate of officers and committee chairs! We have much to be thankful about 2016. We still have our island, all of our boats are relatively unscathed, and none of us harmed by Hurricane Mathew. Looking forward to the next year with all of you guys!!
