INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #115 / Road Game #62 Indianapolis Indians (58-56) at Durham Bulls (69-43) Saturday, August 7, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 7:05 p.m. EDT Durham Bulls Athletic Park -- Durham, N.C. Indians RHP Charlie Morton (3-4, 4.50 ERA) vs. Bulls LHP Heath Phillips (8-6, 3.88 ERA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Charlie Morton, looks to earn his second victory over his last three starts when he takes on the Bulls in tonight s contest... The right hander hopes to duplicate his last outing against the Bulls, as on June 24 at Victory Field, Morton tossed a complete game two-hitter against Durham, striking out four and allowing just one run in a 9-1 Indians victory... Despite struggling with his control in his last start (six walks), Morton still held the Norfolk Tides to just one earned run on three hits on August 1... This came after the right hander earned the victory over Syracuse on July 27, when he held the Chiefs to four runs on seven hits, while striking out five over 6.2 innings... Morton has struggled with left handers this season as they have hit.311 (37-for-119) against him, while he has held right handers to a.246 average (32-for-130) on the season... Morton has also posted notable home and road splits this season, as the right-hander has gone 1-2 with a 3.42 ERA (9 ER in 23.2 IP) in four starts at home, while he has posted a 2-2 record and a 5.17 ERA (22 ER in 38.1 IP) in seven starts away from Victory Field. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Morton in tonight s contest is Bulls starter and Evansville, Indiana native, Heath Phillips Phillips last lost of the season came against the Tribe on June 22, when he was roughed up for a season high eight runs on 10 hits, including four home runs in a 9-1 Tribe victory... However since that start, Phillips has not lost a contest, posting a 2-0 record and 3.29 ERA (15 ER in 41.0 IP ) with 28 strikeouts and just 12 walks over seven starts... Phillips downfall this season has been giving up the longball as he has surrendered the second most home runs in the International League this season (20) including having served up multiple homers on five separate occasions... The southpaw was also on a roll before his rough outing against the Tribe as he had turned in a 3-1 record and a 1.38 ERA over his last 26.0 IP (4 ER on 13 hits in four starts) before his June 22 outing in Indianapolis Phillips, who owns a.243 batting average against this season (121-for-497) has been able to shut down opponents in key situations as he has held opposing batters to a.205 average (15-for-73) with runners on and two outs and a.171 batting average (7-for-41) with runners in scoring position with two outs Left-handed batters are hitting.271 (51-for-188) against Phillips, while right-handers are batting.227 (70-for-309) against the Durham starter Phillips, who attended Evansville Central High School and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox organization, made his professional baseball debut with the Single-A Kannapolis (N.C.) Intimidators in 2001 Phillips remained in the White Sox organization through the 2007 season when he made his Major League debut on September 5 The left-hander posted a 3.68 ERA in 7.1 IP (3 ER) over six appearances with the White Sox Phillips split the 2008 campaign with the Scranton/Wilkes- Barre Yankees and the Durham Bulls before spending the entire 2009 season with the Omaha Royals and the Kansas City organization. LOVIN THE LEFTIES: Although the Tribe has only hit a modest.268 (257-for-960) against left-handed pitchers this season, numerous Indians batters have enjoyed considerable success against southpaw pitchers this year Against lefties, INF Doug Bernier has batted.325 (13-for-40) with five runs, one home run, five RBI and eight walks, C Luke Carlin has hit.333 (17-for-51) with eight runs scored, three doubles, nine RBI and nine walks, OF Alex Presley has slugged his way to a.361 average (13-for-36) with six runs, one home run and four RBI, 2B Jim Negyrch has hit an even.400 (16-for-40) with seven runs, two doubles, two triples, one home run and nine RBI and OF Mitch Jones has hit a combined.345 (29-for-84) with 14 runs, seven home runs and 14 RBI against southpaws between his time with Triple-A Gwinnett and the Tribe. NEW FACES OFF TO THE RACES: The Indians have added several players to their roster over the last week and they all have made a significant impact already in their short time in an Indians uniform... INF Pedro Ciriaco, who was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks, has hit.267 (4-for-15) with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base in four games, OF Mitch Jones has batted an even.400 (4-for-10) with a run and a stolen base in four games and INF/OF John Bowker has hit an even.500 (5-for-10) with three doubles and two RBI in three games with the Tribe. MOSS ON FIRE: After driving in a run with a first inning double against Norfolk on August 3 Tribe OF Brandon Moss improved his team-best RBI total to 77, which ranks as the second-highest tally in the International League this season... The Indians left-handed slugger has recently moved past both Toledo Mud Hens INF Jeff Frazier and Norfolk Tides INF Robert Andino - who have collected 68 RBI and 66 RBI, respectively and trails only Durham Bulls INF Dan Johnson s astounding total of 95 RBI... Since Moss recent hot streak began on July 6, during which time he has reached base safely via a hit or a walk in 23 of 27 contests, the Georgia native ranks tied for third in all of professional baseball with 34 RBI, behind only Triple-A Iowa Cubs OF Brad Snyder s 38 RBI and Single-A High Desert Mavericks OF Johermyn Chavez s 37 RBI... The Indians outfielder has also been one of the most consistent contributors for the Tribe offense this season, and, among current players, he leads the team in games played (106), at-bats (389), runs scored (59), hits (104), doubles (25), home runs (19), RBI (77) and total bases (188). ADD MARTINEZ TO THE MIX: RHP Joe Martinez, who was acquired from the San Francisco Giants organization along with OF John Bowker for Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Javier Lopez, tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the save in the Tribe s 5-3 victory over Norfolk on August 3 in what was his first action in an Indians uniform this season. The right hander posted a 5-3 record and a 3.32 ERA (30 ER), while allowing 78 hits and 26 walks to go along with 65 strikeouts in 81.1 IP over 14 games (13 starts) for Triple-A Fresno earlier this season... Before being traded to Pittsburgh, the right-handed pitcher appeared in four games at the Major League level with San Francisco, turning in a 0-1 record in a 4.91 ERA (6 ER on 15 hits) in 11.0 innings of work... Martinez, who made his Major League Baseball debut with the Giants on April 7, 2009, allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work against the Milwaukee Brewers and earned a win in relief of RHP Tim Lincecum in San Francisco s 2009 Opening Day 10-6 victory... Martinez, who was born in South Orange, New Jersey, spent the 2006-2008 off-seasons working as a substitute teacher at Columbia High School in South Orange, teaching a number of classes... The right-hander pitcher was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 44th round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, but elected not to sign and was later drafted by the Giants in the 12th round in 2005.
