Staying Safe Around Trains

Trains are fun to watch but walking and playing near them can be dangerous. Kids have been hurt when they have been hit by trains. Don t play on the tracks or walk on or beside them. Trains do not always come at the same time every day. Trains are big and look like they are going slower than they really are. Trains cannot swerve like cars. Trains cannot stop quickly. Trains can come from either direction on any of the tracks at any time. Trains do not always blow a whistle to let you know they are coming.

WORD SEARCH LOOK CROSSING SIGN GATES BELLS TRACK RAILS WHISTLES TRAIN Railway crossings have different kinds of signs and signals The X-shaped sign is called a crossbuck. Some crossings also have a bell and fl ashing red lights to warn people that a train is coming. Other crossings also have a gate. The gate comes down to keep people from driving or walking on the track. Another sign at the crossing is a rectangle with a number and a picture of a track. This one tells you how many sets of tracks there are at the crossing. If you see a fl ashing light or hear a bell, wait! You do not have time to get across safely.

To Stay Safe: ALWAYS CROSS AT A RAILWAY CROSSING. A crossing has a sign or gates. Just like crossing the street STOP AND LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING train tracks. Listen for warning bells and watch for the fl ashing lights. Sometimes, engineers also blow the train s whistle to warn people. DON T COUNT ON HEARING A WHISTLE TO WARN YOU THAT A TRAIN IS COMING. If a train is going by, STAND AT LEAST 5 METRES OR 16 FEET (that s about 10 giant steps) back from the tracks when a train is passing. NEVER TRY TO GET ACROSS THE TRACKS IF A TRAIN IS COMING, it is too dangerous. If one train goes by, look both ways again before crossing. MAKE SURE ANOTHER TRAIN IS NOT COMING ON ANOTHER TRACK. Many crossings have more than one track for trains to ride on. When you cross the tracks, ALWAYS STEP OVER THE RAILS (the metal parts). Stepping on the rail can make you slip and fall. ALWAYS WALK YOUR BIKE ACROSS THE TRACKS to make sure your tires don t get caught.

Did You Know? 1 2 3 4 5 6 A train with 8 cars going at 100 km/h needs 1 kilometre to stop! Can you picture how far that is? If it takes you 15 minutes to walk to school, that distance is about 1 kilometre. A train can come from either direction on any track and at any time. Trains do not always run on a schedule. Trains only run on tracks. The engineer cannot swerve to avoid a crash like a car driver can. Railway bridges and tunnels do not have room for you to stay safe when a train goes by. Do not play on railway bridges or explore train tunnels. Trains that are standing still look quiet but they can move at any time. Never play around or climb on train cars. Headphones hide the sound of a train. Take them off when you are walking near traffi c and railway crossings. MATCH THE PICTURES TO THE WORDS A. Crossbuck B. Gate C. Bell D. Sign with the 2 tracks

Spot The Dangers (there are three) hint: The mother and kids are obeying the rules. The girl walking her dog is obeying the rules. 1. 2. 3. ANSWERS 1. WRONG: Boy and girl are crossing the tracks while a train is coming. RIGHT: Obey the signals and always cross the tracks at a railway crossing. 2. WRONG: Girl is sitting on her bicycle. RIGHT: Make sure you always walk your bike across the tracks. 3. WRONG: Boy is walking beside the tracks while wearing headphones. RIGHT: Never walk on or beside train tracks. Always remove your headphones.
