Martha's Vineyard Surfcasters Association P.O. Box 3053 Edgartown, MA 02539 www.mvsurfcasters.org March 2019 Newsletter Hello Surfcasters, Can you feel it? Spring! I can almost hear the bass swimming through the waters to our beautiful shores. It just might be time to bring the rods out of storage and start going through my gear. Pure joy! If you need any reminders of why we love fishing, take a look at Dr. Dave s winning photograph on the right. Can t you just feel the summer sun? Hear the ocean? And imagine the fish in the cooler after a fabulous afternoon? Or maybe you ve just landed a keeper bass as the sun was setting? Great picture, Dave! Truly captures a day on Chappy. We had a fun meeting this month, which included a slide show presentation from our own Ken Beebe on his fishing trip to Alaska. Perhaps our next club adventure??? Keep reading to catch up on the events coming up, and be sure to get your dues in NOW! Our next monthly meeting is Monday, April 1. You d be a fool not to be there. Hope to see you there! Lisa

Club Meeting: What You Missed 1. The Banquet raised $3,400 for a total profit. A nice amount, especially as we didn t have as many people there this year. 2. A large part of our money raised comes from our raffle, which Kathi has run like a pro for 10 years. Kathi is retiring as raffle chair, and we NEED a new raffle person! No raffle, no Banquet. 3. April 20 Earth Day Beach Clean-up MVSA will be cleaning at Norton Point/South Beach. Clean-up is from 10 am to noon, then there is a lunch at the Sailing Camp from 12-2. Please plan to be there. We d like a great club representation this year. 4. Edgartown Rod & Gun Club we ve been holding our meetings here for years. In November, our annual fees will increase from $500 a year to $1000 a year. At the moment, we pay $500 in fees and then donate $500 to stock the fish pond. Do we want to stay at the Rod & Gun Club or look for a new location. We ll discuss this further in April. Bring your ideas, please. 5. President Don still has some t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, and tote bags. He won t be lugging them to anymore meetings, so let him know if you want something. We won t be ordering fleece sweatshirts as there wasn t enough interest. 6. Our annual club picnic will be July 13. We ll have people bring appetizers or desserts based on their last names, just as we did for the Banquet. Stay tuned for your food group. 7. Don s friends from Connecticut will be here again this year over Father s Day weekend. We ll hold another BBQ on the beach, sunniest day, if the interest is there. Best ribs ever!! Not kidding. 8. We voted for President Don to buy another ten plugs to give away at meetings for prizes. 9. It s time to pay your annual dues. Bring your money or check to the April meeting or mail it in. 10. President Don needs another propane tank for the grill. Karen offered one of hers. 11. We need lots of fishing gear plugs, lures, weights, -- for our Used Tackle Sale on Memorial Day Weekend. Bring your donations to the monthly meeetings. 12. At our April meeting, Dick Jennings will give a presentation on Ospreys. 13. We discussed speakers for our May meeting: Steve Morris, or Slick.

BE A WINNER IN THE MVSA IN-HOUSE DERBY MVSA In-House Derby - This is a fun and loosely run tournament based solely on the honor system and club members are eligible to win prizes by submitting entries for one or more of the eligible species (striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito). Fish can be kept but catch and release is strongly encouraged. To determine the weight, the fish can be weighed or the weight can be estimated by using the following formula. (length x the girth squared, divided by 800=total weight). It's surprisingly accurate. HOW TO ENTER ----- You must be a paid in full member before catching and weighing in any fish. Use the weigh-in slip on the MVSA website and make as many copies as you need. When you catch a fish you want to enter, use the calculation above or weigh on a digital fishing scale. To be eligible for consideration, your fish must conform to the minimum sizes below: Striped bass 32" Bluefish 22" Bonito 21" False Albacore 25" Boundaries: To be eligible, a fish must be caught in or around the waters of Martha's Vineyard, within MVSB & BF Derby Boundaries. (Fish caught during the trip to Cuttyhunk are not eligible for any prizes) DIVISION AND AWARDS A monthly pin will be awarded to the member that submits an entry for the largest fish in each species. All monthly entries will participate in a "luck of the draw" raffle to win a Ron McKee custom lure. All first, second and third place monthly winners will also be entered into a year-end raffle to win new fishing reels. There will be three raffles, one each for all first, second and third place entries. A special prize will also be awarded to the member who catches and releases the largest striped bass over 20 lbs. The Angler of the Year will be determined by a point system based on monthly entries. Five points will be awarded for a first-place monthly winner, three for second, and one for third. The member who finishes the year with the most points will be declared the Angler of the Year. Entries: Must be received within seven days after the catch and may be submitted by email to Dave Balon at: WeighSlip@mvsurfcasters.org. If you do not have an email account, mail your entry to: MVSA In-House Derby, P.O. Box 3053, Edgartown, MA 02539 Slips must be postmarked within seven days of the date of catch. During the MV Bass & Bluefish Derby, there is no need to fill out our weigh-in slip; simply mail in the official MV Derby weigh-in slip. In-House Derby entry forms may be obtained on the MVSA web-site www.mvsurfcasters.org (Then go to the Club tab, 2018 In-House Derby) The Official Weigh-In Slip link is under the MVSA Derby Info section.
