Pac-10 Women's Basketball Release (December 18, 2000) Page 3 PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK STANFORD freshman guard Susan King has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 11-18. King, from Richfield, Minn, led all scorers with a career-high 21 points in No. 15 Stanford's 63-58 loss to No. 2 Tennessee Dec. 17. Playing point guard against the Lady Vol press, King shot 50.0 percent from the field (7-of-14), notching a career-high three 3- pointers. She added five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 39 minutes of play before a crowd of 9,246 at Thompson-Boling Arena. King, who sustained a concussion in practice last week, did not practice with the team until Dec. 16. She is second in scoring (11.6 points) for the 5-2 Cardinal and paces the team with 5.43 assists per game (2nd Pac-10). This is King's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Stanford's 39th Player of the Week honor all-time. ALSO NOMINATED: Veranda James, ARIZ; Aisha Hollins, USC; Jill Pimley, WASH; Brittney Hawks, WSU. 2000-01 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: N. 27 Melody Johnson, ASU D. 4 Nicole Funn, OSU D. 11 Elizabeth Pickney, ARIZ D. 18 Susan King, STAN PAC-10 NOTES ARIZONA Riding a six-game win streak, the Wildcats are in the midst of a stretch that will see them play four games in five days. Arizona opens the Puerto Rico Tournament against No. 9 Auburn. UA shot season-best 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the field against Louisville. For the first time in school history, the Cats have put together a string of four straight games scoring 90 points or more. Senior guard Reshea Bristol moved up to the No. 5 spot on Arizona's career steals chart (189), and needs just two thefts to reach the No. 4 spot. She flirted with a triple-double last week versus Louisville (14 pts/8 reb/9 ast). ARIZONA STATE With two contests remaining before the Dec. 27 AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic against Tennessee, ASU is looking for its third road victory of the season at Denver Dec. 18. That number would equal ASU's total from 1999-2000. The Sun Devils rank second in the Conference in scoring defense (53.4 ppg), the eighth-best mark nationwide a week ago. Arizona State paces the Pac-10 in three-point field goal percentage defense (.196) and rebounding defense (32.9 rpg). CALIFORNIA Following a 12-day break for finals, California visit San Diego State Dec. 22, its first meeting with the Aztecs since 1995-96. The Golden Bears are playing.500 basketball over their last six games. Three of their five losses have been by a combined 11 points, including a 77-73 loss at home to Santa Clara in their last outing (Dec. 10). The Bears, who play seven of 10 nonconference games away from Haas Pavilion, do not return home until Jan. 4 for their Pac-10 opener against Arizona. OREGON The 23rd-ranked Ducks return to the friendly confines of McArthur Court to host UC Santa Barbara following a tough 0-3 road trip that included two losses last week. The Ducks have lost three in a row just three times in seven-plus seasons under Jody Runge. Undefeated Utah held Oregon leading scorer Angelina Wolvert to zero points while holding the Ducks to a season-low 35.0 percent shooting from the field. UO has not dropped four in a row since the 1995-96 season. OREGON STATE The undefeated Beavers will try their hand at No. 25 Utah before traveling to Portland for a Dec. 21 matchup. The game against the Utes will feature two of the nation's stingiest defenses, as Utah led the nation in scoring defense (48.8 ppg) and Oregon State ranked fourth (52.7 ppg/1st Pac-10) last week. Guards Felicia Ragland (19.0 ppg) and Nicole Funn (18.0 ppg) rank second and third, respectively, among Pac-10 scorers, while Funn is second in rebounding (8.0 rpg).

Stanford, coming off a loss at No. 2 Tennessee, will then prepare for a Dec. 27 contest at No. 20 Oklahoma. The three-game stretch marks the first time since the conclusion of the 1995-96 season that Stanford has played three straight ranked opponents. The Cardinal has won five of the last seven meetings with the Boilermakers, including the 73-72 upset of eventual national champion and then-no. 1 Purdue on Nov. 21, 1998, at Maples Pavilion. UCLA The Bruins head East this week for a pre-christmas trip at Old Dominion and Ohio State. Junior guard Michelle Greco (20.1 ppg) took over the Pac-10 scoring lead following her 34-point performance against Long Beach State Dec. 10. She is tied for second in Pac-10 free throw percentage (.864) and ranked 27th nationally in scoring last week. USC The Women of Troy hit the road with games at Baylor and No. 11 Texas Tech this week. USC is riding a five-game win streak, its longest since a five-game streak during the 1996-97 season. USC's last three victories have come by an average of 19.3 points. After missing the team's first six games due to back injuries, freshman Aisha Hollans played against Pepperdine, contributing 14 points and a team-high six rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Two other freshmen reached doubles figures against the Waves, as Jessica Cheeks notched 10 points and Ebony Hoffman posted 11 rebounds. WASHINGTON The Huskies conclude their seven-game homestand by hosting the Seattle Times Classic this week. UW has posted four straight victories heading into the Loyola Marymount contest. Senior guard Jill Pimley scored a career-high 14 points, going 7- for-9 from the free throw line, in Washington's win over St. Mary's. Pimley, who scored 11 second-half points, notched a 3- pointer in the win. Senior guard Megan Franza leads the Huskies in scoring (15.1 ppg), while freshman guard Giuliana Mendiola paces UW on the glass (7.4 rpg). UW is averaging a Pac-10-best 6.14 treys and 28.14 defensive rebounds. WASHINGTON STATE The Cougars take an 11-day break before they meet Samford in the Lady Griz Holiday Classic hosed by Montana (Dec. 29). WSU evened its record at 4-4 and equaled last year's win total with the victory over Gonzaga. With 298 career assists, senior Katie Nyseth moved to seventh place on the Cougar all-time list. Nyseth needs nine assists to move to the No. 6 spot, and is currently third in the Pac-10 with 5.12 assists per game. Junior guard Brittney Hawks scored a season-high 19 points in the win over Gonzaga, and now leads the Cougars in scoring (9.9ppg).
