Oklahoma is 5-1 when facing ranked opponents this season. Its five wins over top-25 teams are the most in the nation. Oklahoma also leads the country in wins over top-10 teams (three). The Sooners own an impressive 11-1 record during the Kruger era when playing at home and both teams are ranked. The lone loss in such a game came to Kansas in 2016. The Sooners will enter Tuesday s matchup riding a 12-game home winning streak. The Sooners have not lost at home since Feb. 8, 2017. The streak is the longest for the Sooners since winning 19 home contests in a row from Jan. 17, 2015 to Feb. 8, 2016. Oklahoma is 9-0 at the LNC this season and is averaging 98.8 points per home game. PLAY FAST, SCORE BUCKETS Oklahoma is off to a 14-3 start behind the highest-scoring offense in the nation. The Sooners average 92.2 points per game and have scored at least 90 points in 11 of their 17 games - including six games in triple digits. Oklahoma, who ranked 331 (of 351 teams) in assists per game last season (10.6), is 19th in the country with 17.8 assists per contest this year. The Sooners also rank ninth in made 3-point field goals per game with 11.1 treys. The Sooners aren t just scoring in bunches - they re playing fast. Oklahoma is third in the nation and first among major conferences in KenPom.com s adjusted tempo rankings (possesions per 40 minutes adjusted to the opponenet) with 77.1. Oklahoma s average possession is 13.7 seconds long, the fastest among major conferences and third-fastest overall. Oklahoma is 7-0 when shooting above 50 percent and 7-0 when it hands out at least 20 assists. Oklahoma has scored 45 or more points in 18 of its 34 halves this season and has scored at least 40 points before halftime in all but three contests. GAME LEADERS OKLAHOMA KANSAS STATE Points Young, 20 Brown, 24 Doolittle, 8 Wade, 7 Assists Young, 6 Wade, 7 No. 4/6 Oklahoma (14-3, 4-2 Big 12) fell to Kansas State (13-5, 3-3 Big 12) inside Bramlage Coliseum, 87-69, on Tuesday in Manhattan, Kan. By scoring 20 points, Oklahoma freshman guard Trae Young surpassed 500 career points taking just 17 collegiate games to accumulate the scoring milestone. Young s 17 games are the fewest needed to reach 500 career points in OU program history. Sooner great Wayman Tisdale previously held the honor of fastest to 500 by reaching the mark in his 19th collegiate game. Young is the first NCAA Division I player to score over 500 points in his first 17 career games in at least 20 years. The fewest games to reach 500 career points in the past two decades was previously 18 by Jason Conley of VMI (2001-02). In the past 20 years, three other players have reached 500 points for a season in 17 or fewer games - most recently Trey Johnson of Jacksonville State in 2006-07 (17 games). Bubba Wells of Austin Peay reached 500 in 16 games (1996-97) and Charles Jones of Long Island University reached it in 17 games (1997-98). Junior guard Rashard Odomes collected a career-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding six boards and a pair of assists. Freshman forward Brady Manek scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds. WHERE OKLAHOMA RANKS... In 17 games, the Norman native has put together 10 double-doubles, 16 20-plus-point games, six 30-plus-point games and a pair of 40-plus-point games. Young is averaging 29.5 points, 9.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting.453 from the field and.395 from 3-point range. He leads the nation in scoring and averages over 10 points more than any other Big 12 player (Kansas Devonte Graham is second with 18.3). Young s 9.8 assists also lead the country. No player in recorded NCAA history has finished a season leading the country in both scoring and assists. Just 17 games into his collegiate career, Young already owns the program record for total assists in a freshman season with 166 dimes. The previous record was held by Tommy Mason- Griffin with 154 in 31 games during the 2009-10 season. Young ranks in the top 10 among all-time OU freshmen in numerous other categories for season totals. He is tied for first in 3-point field goals (70) and is sitting at fourth in points (501), fourth in foul shots (131) and seventh in steals (34). The scoring highlight of Young s collegiate career thus far has been scoring 43 points on two occasions. Young reached the career-high on Nov. 26 against Oregon and again on Jan. 13 versus TCU. He is the 15th Sooner to score 40 points in a game, but just the second to do so as a freshman. Wayman Tisdale is the only Sooner freshman to score more in a game with outings of 51, 46 and 44 points in the 1982-83 season. Young s 43 points are the second-highest by an OU player in the past 23 years - trailing only Buddy Hield s 46 points in triple overtime against Kansas on Jan. 3, 2016. He is also the fourth player in program history to score 40 points in a game multiple times, joining Wayman Tisdale (five), Stacey King (two), and Jeff Webster (two). Young isn t just breaking school records, he s also tied one of the most impressive single-game records in college hoops history. By dishing out 22 assists against Northwestern State on Dec. 19, he tied the NCAA record for most assists in a game (assists became official in 1983-84) while breaking both Oklahoma and Big 12 records (both were 18 assists). Young is the fourth player in recorded college basketball history to register 22 assists and the first since Sherman Douglas of Syracuse in 1989. Since the NCAA began recording assists in 1983, Young is the only freshman to dish out 20 or more assists in a game. Oklahoma s single-game assist record was previously held by Michael Johnson (1997) and Jan Pannell (1983). Johnson was tied with Oklahoma State s Doug Gotlieb (1998) for the previous Big 12 record. Oklahoma s freshman season scoring record is owned by Tisdale, who averaged 24.5 points per game in his rookie season. Tisdale s freshman year was so memorable (he also averaged 10.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks), that the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named its national freshman of the year award after him in 2010. Tisdale also owns the overall Oklahoma single-season scoring record, averaging 27.0 points in 1983-84. From Dec. 16 to Jan. 3, Young assembled a double-double in five straight games - the ninth-longest double-double streak in program history. Young scored at least 25 points in all five games of the streak and is the first college player in at least 20 years to record five straight games of 25 points and 10 assists. Young has recorded 25 points and 10 assists in seven of his 15 games this season - the most in a college CAREER in the past 20 years. The only other college player to reach seven such games in the past two decades is J.J. Barea of Northeastern (2002-06) with seven in 113 career games. Through 10 weeks, Young has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors six times - tied with Blake Griffin (also of Oklahoma) for the most in a single season. Young has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Nov. 13, Nov. 27, Dec. 18, Dec. 27, Jan. 1 and Jan. 15. He has also earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 20 and Dec. 4. Young ended the month of November averaging 28.8 points, 8.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He is the first freshman to lead all Division I players in scoring in the month of November since Eric Gordon of Indiana in 2007. He is also the first freshman to average over 28.0 points in the opening month of the season since 2002 and the first player of any grade to finish November averaging over 28 points and 8 assists since 1997. Young joins Gordon and Michael Beasley (Kansas State) as the only freshmen in the last 20 years with three 30-point games in November. Young is the only one to do it in three straight games. GOING LOCAL Oklahoma has seen strong production from a pair of freshmen already known around the Norman area. Guard Trae Young (Norman) and forward Brady Manek (Harrah) are both local products with numerous high school accolades now in their first season as Sooners. The pair is combining to average 40.8 points per game the most by any freshman duo in the country. Attending high school less than three miles from the University of Oklahoma campus, Young is the first starter at OU to list Norman as his hometown since Steve Ayers in the 1967-68 season. Young has been named to numerous preseason honors lists - including the Preseason Top 50 for the John R. Wooden Award and the 20-person watch list for the 2018 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. Young is also a Preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention selection. Named a five-star recruit according to 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout, Young was named the second-best point guard in his national recruiting class by ESPN and third-best by 247Sports and Scout. Playing high school ball at Norman North HS, Young averaged 42.6 points, 4.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds during his senior year while shooting 48.9 percent from the field. He earned McDonald s All-America honors, becoming the fourth McDonald s All-American from Oklahoma to play for OU, joining Sooner legends Blake Griffin, Wayman Tisdale and Jeff Webster. @OU_MBBall 2017-18 DIVISION I LEADERS Points Per Game 1. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES After reaching the 2016 Final Four, Oklahoma s 2016-17 squad was in rebuilding mode after losing a trio of senior starters that included National Player of the Year Buddy Hield. The 16-17 squad finished 11-20, but showed glimpses of special talent among the young team comprised mostly of underclassmen. With an extra year of experience and the addition of impact freshmen Brady Manek and Trae Young, the Sooners have put together an impressive turnaround in 2017-18. OU has already surpassed its win total from last season and was the fastest team to match its previous year s win total (minimum of 11 wins) since Indiana started the 2011-12 season 12-0 after going 12-20 the year before. CONSISTENT KRUGER Lon Kruger has made his mark on the college basketball world as a master rebuilder. Throughout his career, he has inherited struggling programs and taken them as far as the Final Four in a short number of a years. While Kruger s turnarounds have traditionally occurred at new schools, the seventh-year head coach at Oklahoma now looks to continue his rebuilding success with his own program in Norman. Kruger s success at Oklahoma has been evident throughout the country, taking a Sooners team that went 27-36 (.429) in the two seasons prior to his arrival to reaching the Final Four just five years into the job. Since 2011, Kruger has racked up four NCAA Tournament appearances, coached three NBA Draft picks and a national player of the year (Buddy Hield) and was named the 2014 AP Big 12 Coach of the Year. Although a young Oklahoma team finished the 2016-17 season with an 11-20 record and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years, Kruger carries a track record of bouncing back throughout his career. Since 1986 (his first season as head coach at Kansas State), Kruger has never missed the postseason in consecutive seasons. Of the past six instances that Kruger failed to reach the postseason, five of his teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament the next year. The Sooners have finished as well or better in the conference standings than predicted in four of the six seasons under Kruger. Last season, Kruger became the 33rd head coach to win 600 NCAA Division I games. With 615 career wins, Kruger ranks ninth in victories among active Division I coaches and 32nd in all-time Division I wins. LATTIN S BUILDING BLOCKS Senior forward Khadeem Lattin has proven himself as one of the top shot blockers in Oklahoma program history. In 116 career games for the Sooners, Lattin ranks third in the OU record book in career blocks with 210. ASSOCIATED PRESS NAMES OKLAHOMA A TOP-20 ALL-TIME BASKETBALL PROGRAM The Associated Press announced its All-Time Top 100 last spring, a ranking system to determine the top programs in men s college basketball since the AP poll began in 1949. Oklahoma ranked 20th in the All-Time Top 100 the second highest of any team in the Big 12. To determine the all-time Top 100, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point each) to mark consistency and No. 1 rankings (two points each) to acknowledge elite programs. The AP doesn t release a poll after the NCAA Tournament, so eventual national champions are not factored into these rankings. Below are numbers breaking down Oklahoma s history in the AP poll and the Sooners place in the All-time Top 100. Oklahoma ranks second among Big 12 schools in the All-Time Top 100. Kansas (No. 5) is the only school in the conference ahead of the Sooners. Oklahoma s football program ranks second in the AP Football All-Time Top 100. OU is the only Big 12 school to finish in the top 20 of the All-Time Top 100 in both football and men s basketball. Since the mid-80s, the Sooners have appeared in a majority of all AP polls. Oklahoma has been voted a top-25 team in 55 percent of AP polls since the start of the 1984 season. The Sooners have gone nine seasons of being ranked in every AP poll of that season - most recently 2015-16 when Lon Kruger s squad was in the top 10 of every week s poll. Oklahoma has been ranked No. 1 in the country for a total of eight weeks, most recently claiming the top spot for three straight weeks in 2015-16. All eight No. 1 appearances have come since 1988. The Sooners have been ranked in 50 of the last 80 AP polls (62.5 percent), all under head coach Lon Kruger. Oklahoma has reached the Final Four on five occasions - 1939, 1947, 1988, 2002 and 2016. OU has seen two players earn National Player of the Year honors in the past 10 years (the most of any school in that span) - Blake Griffin (2008-09) and Buddy Hield (2015-16). BACKCOURT WORTH WATCHING Oklahoma guards Kameron McGusty and Trae Young were voted by the Big 12 Conference s head coaches as Preseason All-Big 12 Team honorable mention selections. The Sooners were one of only two Big 12 teams with two guards on the conference s preseason honors list. The Sooners also hope to see junior Christian James continue his solid start in the early season. The guard trio of James, McGusty and Young are combining to average 51.5 points per game. Coming off a summer that included shooting 12-of-13 (.923) from 3-point range during the team s trip to New Zealand and Australia, James is averaging 12.8 points through four games. James is working toward a bounce-back campaign after ending the 2016-17 season in a shooting slump. As a sophomore, James began the season averaging 11.3 points in his first 15 games, before scoring just 4.6 points per contest in the last 16 games. He has bounced back from the sophomore slump thus far in his junior year, averaging 12.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting.438 from 3-point range and.510 from the field. McGusty has scored in double digits in six games of the last nine games, including a career-high-tying 22 points against TCU on Dec. 30. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Oklahoma has gone 70-14 (.833) at Lloyd Noble Center over the past six season. Overall, the Sooners are 82-19 (.812) at the LNC in the Kruger era. The Sooners have won 450 of their last 523 encounters at Lloyd Noble Center, good for a remarkable.860 winning percentage. Included in the stretch was a school-record 51-game winning streak (ended in 1990-91). The Sooners also recorded a Big 12 Conference-record 37-game home court winning streak (ended in 2003). OU is 15-10 at home against AP Top 25 opponents in the Kruger era and has won 14 of the last 20 such contests. Oklahoma has won 132 of its last 139 non-conference games at LNC, including 66 of its last 70. The Sooners are 40-4 in Norman against non-conference opponents under Kruger. Overall, the Sooners own a 545-100 (.845) record in the LNC since the building opened in 1975. DOMINANCE DOWN UNDER Oklahoma s 2017-18 season started earlier and much farther south than normal as the Sooners headed to New Zealand and Australia for a foreign exhibition tour in August. The Sooners went 4-0 during their time Down Under, scoring 119.0 points per game and winning by an average margin of 40.0 points. The Sooners were led in scoring by Trae Young with 22.3 points per contest in 21.8 minutes. The Sooners collectively shot 50-of-117 (.427) from 3-point range, sinking an average of 12.5 treys a game. One of the keys to OU s 3-point barrage Down Under was guard Christian James. The junior was near unstoppable from behind the arc, shooting 12-of-13 (.923) during the trip and 10-for-10 in the final three games. Oklahoma pulled down 50.0 rebounds per game on the foreign tour - an average of 16.8 more boards than their opponents. Six players averaged at least four rebounds (while all playing under 21 minutes a game), led by Rashard Odomes with 7.3. Khadeem Lattin, Jamuni McNeace and Brady Manek all pulled down 5.3 boards per outing. THEM BOYS UP TO SOMETHING... Jordan Brand continues to expand both on the court and on the field. On Nov. 9, 2017, the brand welcomed the University of Oklahoma to the family, making it just the fifth collegiate basketball program and third football program to represent the Jumpman. The Sooners uniforms will begin to feature the Jumpman logo at the start of the 2018-19 season. The partnership will include the football team and the men s and women s basketball teams. Oklahoma will join Georgetown, Florida, Marquette, Michigan and North Carolina as the only schools to wear the Jumpman on its men s basketball uniforms. GRIFFIN GIVES BACK The University of Oklahoma s athletics performance center at Lloyd Noble Center, which is expected to be completed in early 2018, will be named after former OU basketball player Blake Griffin in recognition of his financial gift, the largest ever to OU by a former Sooner basketball player. The Griffin Family Performance Center will be an 18,400-gross-square foot training center located just south of the men s and women s basketball s two existing practice gyms. The performance center will help enhance strength training facilities for both men s and women s programs, as well other Sooner studentathletes. Griffin was the 2009 consensus national player of the year and the No. 1 overall pick in that year s NBA Draft. Griffin on the Griffin Family Performance Center: Being a Sooner is more than just what you do in competition. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to play OU basketball, which has a legacy of people that have made it great. College is such a critical time in an athlete s playing career and it s my honor to help give the men s and women s teams the resources and technology that will give them the best opportunity to succeed. Kruger, who has been leaving his trademark rebuilding stamp on college basketball programs throughout his career, is the first Division I coach to ever take five different schools to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015 he became the first coach since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985 to take four programs to the Sweet 16 or beyond. With a career record of 615-384, Kruger boasts the ninth most career wins among active coaches and 32nd in Division I history. He was the 33rd head coach to win 600 Division I games in the history of college basketball, claiming the milestone victory last season. Kruger owns a 20-17 record in NCAA Tournament games and has compiled 16 20-plus-win seasons, including nine in the last 12 years. In 2017, Kruger was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Metropolitan Award for long and outstanding service to men s college basketball. After inheriting a program that went 27-36 (.429) in the two seasons prior to his arrival, Kruger has coached the Sooners to a 136-80 (.630) record in his seven years in Norman. Kruger has guided the Sooners to the NCAA Tournament four times, including a trip to the 2016 Final Four. When Kruger took over the Florida job in 1990, the Gators were coming off of a 7-21 season. Four years into the role, Kruger guided UF to the 1994 Final Four. Kruger is one of just two head coaches (also Rick Pitino with Kentucky and Louisville) to inherit two teams coming off a sub-.500 year and take both to a Final Four within the first five seasons as head coach. A staple of the NCAA postseason, Kruger has taken five different schools to the Big Dance. His collegiate teams have made postseason appearances in 21 of the last 28 years. He has guided teams to 17 NCAA Tournaments, five Sweet 16s and two Final Fours. Kruger rebuilt the Sooners upon his arrival in Norman. His 111 wins in the first five seasons are the second most through the first five seasons of coaching at OU (Billy Tubbs went 115-49 from 1980-85). He was the first coach in OU history to win six NCAA tournament games within his first five seasons. Following the 2013-14 season, he was voted the AP Big 12 Coach of the Year. Under Kruger, Sooner players have earned First-Team All-Big 12 selections on three occasions and racked up 18 Academic All-Big 12 honors. Buddy Hield, who played four seasons for Kruger (2012-16), was named the winner of the 2016 Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy and the Oscar Robertson Trophy as the national player of the year (first consensus player of the year for OU since Blake Griffin in 2009). Hield was named Big 12 Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016 (second player in conference history to win the award twice) and exited OU as the Big 12 s all-time leading scorer. Three Sooners have been drafted into the NBA during Kruger s tenure. Hield was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft while Isaiah Cousins (2016) and Romero Osby (2013) were chosen in the second round of their respective drafts.
