LAST TIME OUT FOR TROY GAME 13» Despite hot shooting by Musa Abdul-Aleem and Wesley Person, the Troy men s basketball team fell to Georgia State, 77-72, at the GSU Sports Arena on Saturday. In the final minutes, the Trojans were unable to hold off the Panthers, as R.J. Hunter was able to shoot 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the last minute to secure the win.» In a game of back and forth play, it came down to the final minutes. Troy was shooting hot until Georgia State was able to hold the Trojans scoreless for 2 minutes and 52 seconds. Prior to the drought, Troy was up 68-67. Georgia State took advantage as it went on a 6-0 run to regain a 73-68 lead.» Abdul-Aleem gave the Trojans a chance as he scored two on a missed 3-pointer as Troy trailed GSU, 73-70. The Trojans fouled Hunter in attempts to get the ball back, but Hunter sunk all six attempts.» Abdul-Aleem paced the Trojans with a career-high 33 points as he shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the floor, including 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Abdul-Aleem and Person each tallied double-figure points at 12 and 11, respectively. The Trojans shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from the field, including six makes from 3-point range. Troy outrebounded Georgia State 14-7 in the first half.» Hunter led Georgia State (10-6, 3-2) as he narrowly missed a career-high with 37 points as he took 20 of the Panthers 44 shots. Hunter shot 9-of-20 on the night, and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.» Hunter made a career-high 15 free throws on 17 attempts while also dishing out a team-high five assists. Georgia State was without its second-leading scorer, Ryan Harrow, as he sat out with an injury. (23-41) The jewel of Sun Belt basketball facilities features seven luxury suites, seats 5,200 for basketball and features a state-of-the-art sound and video system. The state-of-the-art arena is equipped with two 767-square foot high-definition video boards, a continuous ribbon board around the arena and LED display scorer s tables. Trojan Arena also houses the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame which opened in August 2012 and now has 27 members. The facility also features a six-basket practice court, coaches offices for basketball, volleyball and track and field, film room and more. Design support for Trojan Arena was provided by Populous whose other projects include Yankee Stadium, the London Olympics and Wimbledon Tennis Club. The Trojans played their previous 37 seasons in Sartain Hall. STAFF PHIL CUNNINGHAM Head Coach Campbellsville, 1990 Enters his second season as Troy s head basketball coach. In the 2013-14 season, he led the Trojans to an 11-20 record including an appearance in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championships. Named the sixth head coach in Troy history in March 2013. Over the past 14 years, Cunningham s teams have played in the postseason 11 times, including seven trips to the NCAA tournament. Prior to being a head coach, he named one of the top 25 assistant coaches in the NCAA by Rivals.com and was recognized by The Hoop Scoop recruiting publication as one of the top NCAA Division I men s basketball assistant coaches. Cunningham s teams at Miss. State and WKU made 11 postseason appearances in 13 years, including seven NCAA Tournaments. The Bulldogs were SEC champions in 2004 and were SEC West Champs five years. SEC Tournament champions in 2002 and 2009. Played at Kentucky Wesleyan; won a NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987. Transferred to Campbellsville College, where he finished his career ranked among the school s all-time leaders in career assists. ON THE BENCH MARCUS GRANT Assistant Coach Mississippi State, 1995 Previously worked at Mississippi State. In his eight years at MSU, Grant was a part of six postseason appearances, including three NCAA Tournament appearances (two SEC Western Division championships and one SEC Tournament championship). Played for Mississippi State from 1991-95, helping lead the Bulldogs to the 1995 NCAA Sweet 16 in his senior season Played professionally overseas for eight years BEN FLETCHER Assistant Coach Troy, 2004 Played for Troy from 2001-03. Under Fletcher s guidance in 2013-14, Hunter Williams made 98 3-pointers, setting the Troy single-season record, which was previously held by Fletcher. Fletcher led the Trojans to a Sun Belt regular season championship in 2009-10 and a NIT berth. Finished his career with 160 made 3-pointers, the sixth most in Troy s Division I history. BILLY BEGLEY Assistant Coach Mississippi State, 2007 Played for four-years at Mississippi State under then-assistant coach Cunningham Previously was at East Mississippi CC; helped the Lions win three straight NJCAA Region XXIII championships, leading to appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament in all three seasons as well. MIKE WORLEY Director of Operations Denver, 1995 Previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kilgore College in Texas. Prior to his time in East Texas, Worley was an assistant coach to former NBA and collegiate stand-out Todd Day with the Arkansas Impact CHASE STIGALL Video Coordinator Butler, 2013 Played for Butler from 2008 to 2013 under now-boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens. Played on both of Butler s teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship game, and was also a member on three Horizon League Championship teams.
