mean green storylines The Mean Green have seen two goalies in between the post this season. Sophomore Miranda Schoening has started and appeared in the most matches but junior Brooke Bradley started the Mean Green s most recent match versus Indiana. After being held scoreless in their first two home matches, the Mean Green scored a blistering five goals last Sunday versus Houston Baptist. Led by freshman Berklee Peters firstever hat trick, North Texas had its most goals scored since scoring six versus Lamar almost exactly two years ago. Freshman Berklee Peters scored her first career goal on Sunday versus Houston Baptist. She went on to score two more goals for the first hat trick she s ever scored at any level. Taylor Torres scored two goals on Sunday versus Houston Baptist, which gave her a season total of three. It ties her single-season career-high which she set her freshman season in 2015. Freshman Brooke Lampe is proving to be one of the most versatile players on the Mean Green team. She was recruited as a goalkeeper and came into camp as one of the four Mean Green goalkeepers. Once the coaches saw her playing the field, she started practicing with the field players. She came off the bench the first two games to play in the defense, started against Abilene Christian and scored as a forward and started against Texas at the defensive midfield position. She scored her second goal of the year versus Indiana The Mean Green soccer program opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 road victory against Incarnate Word. It took 40 minutes for North Texas to get the offense going but once it started, the goals kept coming. Tori Phillips scored the first Mean Green goal of the season with a penalty kick, the first of her career. All three of North Texas goals versus Indiana were either scored and/or assisted by a true freshman Natalie Newell recorded her fourth assist on Sunday versus Houston Baptist. She now leads the team in assists. Ariel Diaz scored her first career goal in the first game of the season. Until Diaz s goal, Olivia Bagby was the last freshman to score in the season-opening game (2015) and Rachel Holden was the freshman before that in 2013. Carissa Sanders was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team for the first time in her career after being named third-team all-conference following the 2016 season. She has started in the back her first two years and moved to the central defense in 2016, and was one of three Mean Green players last year to start all 21 games and was first in minutes played. She was part of a defensive unit that recorded seven shutouts, including three in conference play a year ago. The three-time defending Conference USA regular-season champion North Texas soccer team was picked to repeat as the leader in the conference. The Mean Green were voted No. 1 in the preseason poll by the league s coaches for the second time as a member of Conference USA. North Texas has won the regular-season league title the last three years. Charlotte, the 2016 C-USA tournament champion, was picked to finish second along with Rice, which finished second in the regular season last year. The Mean Green lost most off their offense to graduation last year. Rachel Holden, Marchelle Davis, Anna Flobeck and Hailey Sutton combined for 29 of NT s 42 goals last year. To bolster the offense, the coaching staff has added four forwards to the team to help out returners Taylor Torres and Cat Sebazco. Ariel Diaz, Natalie Newell, Aayliah Nolan and Berklee Peters have boosted the losses. Those four have combined for 22 of the Mean Green s 45 points this season. Four of the Mean Green s 12 newcomers are transfers. Natalie Newell and Caroline Paulette transfered to North Texas last spring and participated in spring ball. Natalie Mc- Donough is a junior transfer from Missouri and Aaliyah Nolan is a junior transfer from Navarro. The Mean Green have a pair of sisters on the team for the first time since Angela and Nikki Carter played together in 2000. Freshman Logan Bruffett has joined her sister, Lauryn, on the Mean Green soccer team. Lauryn is a junior, who played last year with North Texas after transfering from Mississippi State. Sophomore defender Madeline Guderian is the younger sister of Alison Guderian, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Mean Green from from 2010-13. The Mean Green have won 12 conference championships in program history, including the last three Conference USA regular-season titles. The three straight titles is a program record. The Mean Green won back-to-back titles three times in school history. With its 15-5-1 record, the 2016 Mean Green soccer program achieved their 22nd consecutive winning season. North Texas has never had a losing season in the history of the program. North Texas head coach John Hedlund has been at the helm of the Mean Green for all 22 seasons and his overall career record stands at 318-122-28. North Texas went 9-0 at home in 2016; the first time since 2003 that the Mean Green went undefeated with no ties at home. NT also went 5-0 at home against C-USA opponents and extended its home unbeaten streak against conference opponents to 39 games. The 39- game unbeaten streak is tied for first in the nation. The Mean Green have not lost a home conference game since Oct. 31 of 2008.The Mean Green s overall home record in program history is 169-26-13 (.844) and 91-13-7 (.853) in 10 years at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Since the program s birth in 1995, the Mean Green has never had a losing season. North Texas 22-year combined record stands at 318-122-28 - a.710 winning percentage. The ultimate goal of the program, North Texas has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times - 2004, 2005, 2012 and 2015. Only five Division I schools in the state of Texas (of 20) have more NCAA Tournament appearances. In C-USA, only Charlotte has more tourney bids. mean green quick shots North Texas is 4-0-1 all-time versus Marshall The Mean Green are outscoring their opponents by an average of 1.2 goals per match. After freshman Logan Bruffett scored versus Indiana, now nine different players have scored for the Mean Green this season. That matches last season total. Arkansas snapped the Mean Green s 17-game home winning streak on August 20. They have rebounded and North Texas has added 12 newcomers to its roster: eight freshmen and four transfers. Three of the four transfers are from Power 5 schools: Natalie McDonough (Missouri), Natalie Newell (Arkansas) and Caroline Paulette (Texas Tech). All three grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Only two members of the North Texas soccer team are from outside of Texas. Miranda Schoening is from Oxford, Alabama and Aaliyah Nolan hails from Warwick, Bermuda. Schoning was the first player ever to play for North Texas who was from out of Texas.
