Phoenix News November 2017 Edition Johannesburg, South Africa
Club News Welcome to our last Newsletter of the year. We are organising two social events before Christmas now that all our gala schedules are over: a club swim on November 12th (8-9am) and a family day on December 3rd. Open water swimming is in full swing with three swims in November. It would be great if some of our open water swimmers could join us for our December fun day with their families. We haven't seen you for ages. We have a new Facebook page. Check us out there. VERY IMPORTANT: Registration for next year s competitions Please take note of the date November 22, by which you need to register with the club to participate in all competitions in 2018. Note: Committee members' details at end of this newsletter. 2
Recruiting and Flyer We are going on a recruiting drive. Your committee has been very busy contacting every past member of the club to entice them back. But we do also need new blood in our club and have produced a flyer which we hope may entice some keen swimmers to join us. As you know in Gauteng you can become a masters swimmer when you are 19! We are thinking of young people you may know, who are leaving school or tertiary education or starting work where there is no organised swimming and would still like to train and swim competitively; or perhaps tri- athletes who would like to jack up their swimming skills - or past swimmers who don't realise how marvellous it is to be back in training again, not because you have to but because you want to. Quite a difference. There aren't many sports where you are still active and competitive in you 80s and even 90s and loving it. Kascha Kloos from Cape Town swam in the World's in Budapest in the 90-94 age group. Well done Kascha - What an inspiration. We will be distributing the flyers to you, our members, at galas and our social meets for you to please hand out. if you miss out there, please contact Lynne and she will arrange to get some flyers to you. 3
New Phoenix Kit and GREAT SALE of old stock Your committee has taken the decision to brighten up our kit a little. We have been using black, white and royal blue for a few years now, as in the pics below. The 'new' colour will be the 'old' aqua for t-shirts and peaks as well as swimming caps which will have our names on them. Socials Club Social Swim 12 Nov 8-9am Our next club swim will be on Sunday November 12th from 8-9am at Roedean.. As the junior pool is very warm your committee has decided it would be much more comfortable to swim in the main pool. Only problem is that the school has a water polo session scheduled so we will need to swim from 8am to 9am rather than the usual 10.30. Anne will be there to give us an interesting swimming programme and we ll have coffee and muffins afterwards. Sunday Funday, 3 Dec On December 3rd we are planning a real family party at the pool at Roedean. Families are invited so come and swim with your children and grandchildren where we'll have some special aces and play some games and then our usual braai afterwards. Again it will be bring your own basics and any extras you may feel like bringing. The committee will do the rest. We will need to do some pre-planning for this so please let Lara know by November 24th that you are coming and if you'll be bringing family and if so, the number of adults and ages of the children. You never know what surprises may be waiting for you. Please, open water swimmers, come join us for the party - even better come join us in the pool as well. 6
