THE HELM Published for members of the USCGC Duane Association Duane Association s Florida Reunion another success story By Stan Barnes, President Our 2005 reunion at the Coronado Springs Resort at Disney World turned out to be a terrific time for the ones who decided to attend. Those attending were, Stan and Barbara Barnes, Tony and Maria Ragucci, Chris Williams, Russ and Noreen Sullivan, Jim Aronhalt and Linda Sauerbier, Jim and Kathy Lake, Jim and Eeva Molasso, Bob and Cathy Turnbull, Bill and Patty Swansburg, Roger and Val Bing, Chick Straub, Al Phaneuf and Lorraine McKenny, Jim Orrock, Tom Grabowski, Don MacEachern, Ben and Marilyn Yascavitch, Greg and Donna Murphy, Bob and Darlene Landry, Jim Mulligan and John Griswold (our guest speaker). Everything went well at the resort and our trip to the Coast Guard Base at Port Canaveral and lunch at Fishlips was very well received. The banquet went off without a hitch and the food (buffet) was delicious. I didn t think we were going to be able to get Jim Orrock away from the buffet table. The raffle had some great prizes. A group picture was taken and is posted in this issue. Our thanks go out to John Miller and all the crew of the Coronado Springs who made this reunion one to remember. The 2006 reunion will be held in Hull, Mass. (near Boston) on September 21 23, 2006. Bob Haviland is making final preparations, and a plan of the day will be posted in the spring edition of The Helm. October 5-8 2006, is the 70th anniversary celebration of the Secretary of the Treasury class (327s) cutters. This celebration will be held at Mt. Pleasant, Patriots Point, SC. If you plan to attend or would like more information, please contact Gordon Bell or myself. A registration form is included in this issue. It would be nice if the crew of the USCGC Duane had the largest turnout of all seven ships. There are seven new deep-water cutters being built and it is my goal to have one of them named the William J. Duane. Please contact your state delegations in Washington and convince them to push for this naming. If it happens, we could go to Mississippi for the commissioning ceremony. The USCGC Taney in Baltimore Harbor. 2006 USCGC Taney painting party The painting party on the Taney will be held April 19 23, 2006. Anyone wishing to take part, please contact me so that I can make arrangements. We will be staying onboard. The goal this year is to paint the ladders from the 03 (bridge) deck down to the 01 (main) deck, the radio room and the captain s cabin and pantry. For those of you that signed on at the reunion, please send me an e-mail so I can start a list and anyone else interested, please let me know ASAP. This will be a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. No chipping, just painting. Please be advised, if you plan on going, remember there is no free parking in the area and that can get somewhat expensive. I will see about setting up a shuttle from the airport. I wish you fair winds and a following sea.

Treasurer s Health Update As many of you are aware, our Treasurer Bob Haviland has been battling cancer and reacting to the chemo. Bob is now in a rehab facility for 4 6 weeks. He would love to hear from Duane shipmates. He is already stir crazy (not just regular crazy). Bob is at the Northeast Specialties Hospital, 2001 Washington St. Room 153, Braintree, MA 02184. You can give him a call at 781-848-2600 Ext. 553. Keep Bob and his wife Jeanne in your thoughts. Support the Ship s Store. Duane items make great gifts for yourself and for your family. USCGC Duane Association Newsletter Hurricane Katrina has affected some Coast Guard rescuers also Coast Guard personnel, many of whom are now homeless themselves and have lost everything, have rescued over 3,000 people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, working around the clock to bring as many people as possible to safety. As the service members worked non-stop, they could only hope that their own families were well and that someone was there to help them. The Coast Guard Foundation has established a Disaster Relief Fund that will be used to assist Coast Guard personnel and their families in the affected areas and bring relief to them as they worked hard to relieve the suffering of others. The Coast Guard conducted dramatic search-andrescue missions, assessed damage in the air and on the water and flew in badly needed supplies. Crews worked round-the-clock, despite knowing all they have left is the uniform on their back. Please help us support these brave men and women and their families. It s time to send in your Duane Association dues for 2006. See the back page for a renewal form. The Helm newsletter is published by the USCGC Duane Association. Jay Schmidt, Editor & Publisher 6 Goodwin Drive Norton, MA 02766 jay.schmidt@att.net You can contribute to the Coast Guard Foundation Disaster Relief Fund through their web site www. cgfdn.org or via fax at: (860) 535-0944 or by calling them at (860) 535-0786. or you may send a check to: Disaster Relief Fund Coast Guard Foundation 395 Taugwonk Road Stonington, CT 06378 The Coast Guard Foundation is a public nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit Coast Guard men and women.
