NORTHEAST FLORIDA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION February 2010 USDF Region 3 NFDA is a Group Member Organization and our members are automatically USDF Group Members From the President February 2010 Extended Remarks January was a great month for NFDA. We had our first show of the year and a fun and well attended banquet. Kudos go to our show manager, Brenda Lewis- Lipscomb for having the foresight to rent the indoor ring at Jacksonville Equestrian Center, once it became apparent that our show was going to be wet. Our May show will also use the indoor ring so if you have never ridden inside, here is your chance. In addition, Brenda has proposed adding prix caprilli (a test which includes jumps) and/or dressage tests for gaited horses to our shows, so please email her (BrendaNFDA@aol.com) so that we can gauge interest. More thanks and a job well done to Jill Morris and Shantel Brooks, who coordinated our year end awards program and banquet. We had many great raffle prizes and beautiful awards for the series winners and volunteers, including painted coffee mug trophies, ribbons, jackets, coolers and directors chairs. Our next show is on February 27, 2010 and the closing date is February 13 th. Don t forget to send in your entries and offer to volunteer. The winter weather has been cooler than in recent years so get in some riding time before the heat and humidity of summer (and spring and fall, too) set in. Give you horse(s) some extra love on the 14 th and have a wonderful month! NEWS AND CLUB UPDATES Dressage on the First Coast News It is time to start thinking about the April DOFC recognized show. The DOFC show will be held on April 10 th and 11 th, 2010 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Our recognized shows are the biggest income producers for the NFDA, and help to support many programs that benefit the NFDA Membership. Without the success of the DOFC shows, the NFDA would not be able to offer the membership, clinics, educational events, scholarships and our many Awards programs. The success of the Dressage on the First Coast show depends on your support. We have many members who volunteer and many who help financially with their sponsorship. Enclosed in this newsletter, you will find a Sponsorship/ Advertising form. Please review the form. Please consider the idea of becoming a Class sponsor. Another way to support the show would be to become an advertiser. You might consider advertising your business in the Dressage on the First Coast program. Sponsors are entitled to a tax deduction. Let s make the April show a financial success for our club. Please send your form and check made payable to the NFDA to: Denise Dale, 369 Perthshire Drive, Orange Park, FL 32073 Thank you in advance, Denise Dale NFDA SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE TO COLLEGE EQUESTRIAN TEAMS The board of directors for NFDA has recently received several sponsorship requests from former junior members who now ride for a collegiate equestrian team. We have discussed this matter over several meetings and have devised the following guidelines: $ A maximum of five $100 sponsorships will be awarded per year. $ NFDA will award one scholarship per team not per rider $ At least one member of the team must be a member of NFDA $ The college does not have to be in the state of Florida but the request must be for a dressage team or a team which competes in dressage (e.g. eventing /combined training) $ The requesting member of the team must have two volunteer points in the current show year $ Each request will be reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors; along with the request, the member should provide a letter from their coach, on collegiate letterhead, affirming their participation on the equestrian team. $ Students are still eligible to apply for the quarterly NFDA scholarship in addition to the request for team sponsorship Letters can be emailed to our president, Martha Moore, at planboss@comcast.net or mailed to Martha at 12581 Sawpit Road, Jacksonville, FL 32226

NEWS AND CLUB UPDATES NFDA 2009 Year End Banquet WOW! What a fun day we had celebrating all of our Year End winners and recognizing those who go above and beyond for the NFDA. The food was yummy and we had a beautiful room overlooking the St. John s River at the River City Brewing Company. We also had a HUGE door prize give-away/raffle that was made possible by a generous donation ($500 gift certificate to Horse and Kennel) from Deborah Hart. It seems that just about everyone walked out the door with either an award or a door prize! If you missed out on the fun, please try to attend next January. I would love to hear back from those that attended as to the location and time of the banquet. I think most everyone liked having the banquet in the early afternoon. Since many of us have our own farms, it gave us all plenty of time to do morning chores, get spiffed up for the banquet and then you were back home in time for evening chores. I am looking forward to next year s banquet already!! A special thanks to Shantel Brooks (Awards Co-Chair) for organizing the banquet, designing our invitations and putting together the program. I think her laser printer deserves a special thanks too! Thanks for not breaking during all that printing! NFDA 2010 ships off to a GREAT start!! I am thrilled to see so many riders who already have one score towards the 2010 ships! Better yet we already have 2 riders that are completely qualified! Way to go! So how do you get qualified? Well all you have to do is enter a NFDA ships Qualifying Class offered at any of our schooling shows. The qualifying classes are the highest test of the level, i.e. Intro B, Training 4, First 4, Second 4 etc. You also need to pay a $5 qualifying fee at the time of entry. Next you need to score a 60% or higher in order to earn a qualifying score. You need a total of 2 scores of 60% or higher from two different judges at two different shows in order to be qualified for the ship show in November. Once you have your 2 scores of 60% or higher, you are now qualified and do not need to keep entering qualifying classes. Once you re in, you re in! So venture out of your comfort zone and try it! I want everyone who enters the highest test of their level to also ride it as a qualifier because you know what happens if you don t? You will get a 60% or higher and won t be able to use the score! (Happens to me ALL the time!) I will keep an updated list of qualified rides published in the newsletter each month. Here is the first list of the year!! ****NOTE! If you rode 2 of the same qualifying tests at the January show, you can only use one of those scores towards ships. You must have 2 scores from 2 DIFFERENT judges. **** One score earned: Intro Junior: Shannon Groff Casey Knowles Tricia Murphy Landyn Williams Intro Adult: Ashley Hughes Lisa Kaatz Intro Open: Kathy Daly Mary Teter Training Junior: Shannon Groff Lizzy Hudson Training Adult: Abigail Capone Lisa Kaatz Martha Moore First Junior: Aubrey McCall First Adult: Gwen Kirk 2 scores earned, qualified for ships: Training Adult: Michelle Martin First Open: Kathy Daly -- NFDA 2010 Spring Series is under way! The Spring Series is now under way. The prize list was incorrect in the number of scores you need. You must ride in 2 of the 3 shows. 3 scores are needed (not 4) and one of those scores must be from the highest test of your level (Intro B, Training 4, First 4 etc.) Good Luck!! NFDA 2010 Year End Awards I can t believe I am already mentioning Year End Awards BUT now is the time to be aware of the requirements. The program requirements are rather lengthy so you need to either dig out your membership directory or visit the website to read what you need to do in order to qualify. (I hope to have the entire NFDA Awards programs added to the website soon.) Please remember: You MUST have a minimum of 2 volunteer credits in order to be eligible for Year End. Juniors need to have 1 volunteer credit. Please be sure to keep all your score sheets too. They are your only real proof of the scores you earned. That is all the news for now regarding awards. If you have ANY questions about the different programs, please feel free to e-mail me! onthebit@morrisholdings.com Thank you and Good Luck this coming year! Jill Morris Awards Chairman NEWS AND CLUB UPDATES

Hello Everyone: Despite the weather we had a wonderful schooling show in January. The Jacksonville Equestrian Center and their staff are First Class. As we anticipated sever weather conditions and did not want to cancel the show, JEC was able to accommodate us with the indoor arena allowing those who participated to show their horses in a new environment. Also, many thanks to our Judge, Julie Scott, who is always a pleasure and gives our members constructive remarks. A big thank you to Janet Royce and all of the volunteers without whom we could not hold these shows, and to Kate Grimsley who organized a scribe clinic during the lunch break. Please take the time to thank those who make these shows a great learning experience for all. There were 16 qualifying rides for our ship Show in November. Great work everyone. Congratulations to the High Point Grand and Reserve Winners. We will have your Ribbons at the February Show. We are very pleased to have Jennifer Aurilio back this year as our Judge for this show. Since last year, Jennifer has achieved her "r" rating so please congratulate her on this accomplishment. I encourage you to send your entries in early as I anticipate the need to hire a second judge for this show. We will be returning to the outdoor arenas and Barn D at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. As a side note, we will be sharing the facility with a Recreational Vehicle Show that is being held the same weekend. Attached is the February Entry Form which has only a minor change to the Camping Fee. We would like to get some feedback from you regarding additional classes that are being considered. They are: 1. Walk Only Test for Greenies to encourage the young ones to get in the arena (this will be offered at a reduce class fee of $10) 2. Prix Caprilli which combines a dressage test with some minor jumps 3. Dressage for Gaited Horses We have the tests for those of you who are interested in reviewing them and will post them to our website or email them to you upon request. Thank you again to all of you who support NFDA and I would like to encourage any constructive suggestions that will make these shows a more pleasurable experience for all. Happy Trails, Brenda
