From the President October 2010 It was so disappointing that we had to cancel the Championships competition. Mary and I umed and ahed a lot when we went out to the grounds on the Saturday morning (in the freezing wind) because we really wanted to believe the grounds were OK, but realistically they were just too wet, and it would not have been safe. Of course the Sunday was a beautiful day just to rub it in!! However, we have transferred the SCEC Horseland 2010 Dressage Championships to our next (and last for the year) competition date Sunday 28 November and as all the sponsors were happy for their support to be carried forward, all the same prizes (and there s lots of them, and they are good) will be on offer then. A number of people took us up on the offer to carry forward their championship entry to the new date if you haven t let us know, and you would like your entry to be carried forward, please contact either myself or Mary and let us know. Otherwise please send your entry in the usual way closing date is Friday 5 November. The other upcoming event will be the SCEC AGM and Horse of the Year Awards night. As we did last year, we are avoiding the busy pre Christmas time and will hold this event mid January and again we are hoping to book the Aviator Lounge at Albion Park Airport. Watch your email for a flyer with further details about this event a horsey (sans horses) social event that is always good fun!! The AGM is also when the committee for the upcoming year is decided. SCEC operates with quite a small committee and extra hands are always appreciated. Also, a number of our long October 2010 standing committee members have indicated that they will not be standing again this year (they have done their bit, and wish to retire gracefully). So please consider putting your hand up and joining the committee (no experience necessary) many people enjoy the events that SCEC puts on during the year, but it takes people to make those events happen. If you are at all interested I would encourage you to contact either myself or Mary, and we can give you further information on the role and responsibilities of the SCEC committee. Don t forget to get your entries in for the SCEC Horseland 2010 Dressage Championships entries close in just over a week. Hope to see you all there Frances President, SCEC

Next Competition SCEC CHAMPIONSHIPS 28th November, 2010 Entries close 5th November

Secretary s Report October 2010 Spring really turned the tables on our success rate for good competition weather this time round, a real disappointment with the Championships having to be cancelled. For those who felt slightly unprepared, you have until the end of November to get it all together. Then we hope for better conditions on the grounds. We have repaired damage to the last arena and spent quite a bit of effort making sure all arenas are hazard free no small task on occasion as the arena area seems to be popular for late night revellers who tend to leave the place littered with cans & bottles. We still have all those fantastic prizes for you to compete for so make sure your entries are in early. Championship competitions tend to attract a high number of competitors so it may be impossible to accept late entries, especially those that turn up a week before the comp!! On the subject of entries, PLEASE print your details clearly and make sure that you fill in all sections with current details. We cannot use information such as banking details from previous forms and if you are sending credit card details please note that we cannot process your details without your ccv number. At our last committee meeting it was decided that the HOTY presentation, combined with the AGM would once more be held in the new year. This takes the pressure off everyone involved in the mad pre Christmas rush and gives us all something to look forward to at the beginning of the year. We will advise you all of dates and the venue closer to the time. The championship competition will therefore be the last one to count toward points for 2010. Now is a good time for everyone to think about the direction in which they would like to see the club go next year. The majority of our financial members compete from Prep to Novice level so you have the greatest sway when it comes to deciding what kinds of activities and events you would like to see organised. Some food for thought we are an equestrian club in name so do not have to stick to the confines of dressage competitions only. It just depends upon who is willing to organise what. Finally I will not be standing for the position of secretary again next year. With more travel and some significant family events on the horizon I will not be around all the time. Although the associated duties are not difficult or excessively time consuming, it does not make for efficient management if the record keeper/mail collector etc is not around. It also puts unnecessary pressure on other committee members. So as I have been involved with the committee since 1997, I think its time to take a back seat. The club lap top will go to who ever takes the job on and I am more than happy to provide any support or explanation needed for a smooth transition. As has often been said, for your club to run to maximum efficiency, the efforts of more than a small handful of volunteers is needed, so please think about coming on board and let one of the current committee know you will be available. In the meantime, happy preparations for the Championships and see you in November. 2010 SCEC Secretary Mary

Judges Writer (penciller) Guidelines Each judge has a writer whose job it is to record the marks (scores) and comments given by the judge during a dressage test. Each judge has a writer with them for this purpose. The skills necessary to be a good writer include the following: writers should have good hearing, be able to write neatly and have a good understanding of written and spoken English. Judging usually takes place from a car, which means the job is not physically strenous but writers need to be able to get in and out of cars and walk to where the judges cars are parked. For this reason this job is not suitable for people in wheelchairs. The following information will assist writers in their task of writing: 1. Read through the test before the event so you are familiar with the movements and flow of test. 2. Be on time for your pencilling appointment - preferably arrive at least 15 minutes before the test is due to start and report to the organisers. 3. Take a pen along with you (check that it is working), always good to have 2 on hand. 4. Ask the judge how she/he operates, (eg, gives comments then mark) and inform the judge that you are new to writing if this is the case. - The judge will give you a mark out of 10 for every movement and usually makes a comment as well. It is important that you record every mark correctly and this must take precedence over the recording of the comments. 5. Make sure that all details such as : judgeing position (C, M, E etc), Riders Name, Horse Name and Bridle number, Official versus Associate are correctly noted on the top of the test paper. Also print the name of the judge in the space provided on the test paper. 6. Use the list of abbreviations and symbols to assist with recording the comments to save time when writing. Make other abbreviations as you see fit (as long as they will be understood). Sometimes a copy is included in the folder with judging sheets or if not ask the Club Secretary to provide you with one for easy reference. 7. Write neatly and be accurate in completing the test sheet. 8. Ensure there is a mark in every square for each movement. 9. Notify the judge when they miss a mark. 10. Mark all errors of course with an E/C or * in the right hand remarks column and circle the appropriate number of errors incurred during the test in the errors section at the bottom of the test paper. 11. Only return sheets to the scorers for competitors who competed. Do not mark papers with names of horse/riders who scratched (SCR) or did not apper (DNA). This is unnecessary waste of paper (help save trees). 12. Mark DNA on the draw sheet provided and tick each horse that competes to enable scorers to know there should be a test paper for that competitor. 13. If it is necessary to alter a mark, cross out the old one and re-write the new mark and make sure the judge initials the alteration. 14. Judges must sign every test paper before handing it over to a runner/official collecting papers. 15. Please take care when writing down numers to avoid confusion with scoring. Badly written numbers cause delays with the test paper having to be returned to the judge for checking.

Riders and coaches (who are not judges), may not fully appeciate what a judge is looking for when judgeing dressage copmetitions. Sometimes expressions used by judges are not fully understood by rides/coaches. Riders and coaches may have a different perspective on what a judge wants to see in a dressage test. You will become familliar with the terminology used by judges. Seeing a test from the judges position will help you when competing in dressage competitions. Witness first hand what the judge can see from various judgeing positions around the arena (short side versus long side). Writing for judges will give you a competitive edge.
