WOMEN S BASKETBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 3 2011-12 WOMEN S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK DEFENDING SOUTHLAND WEST DIVISION CO-CHAMPIONS Before last year, Sam Houston State women s basketball had not finished among the Southland Conference s top five teams since 2000. The 2011 Bearkats were predicted to finish sixth in the league s West Division in the preseason poll. But in a record-breaking season, Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols team rolled up an 11-5 league record to tie with UTSA as 2011 Southland Conference West Division co-champions. The title was the Bearkats first in 24 years of competition at the NCAA Division I level. The SHSU women s team was the No. 4 seed in the State Farm Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, the program s highest seed since 2000 when the Kats also were seeded fourth. ONE FOR THE BOOKS Sam Houston s 2010-11 women s basketball season was one for the record books. Compiling an overall season mark of 17-14, Sam Houston produced its first above.500 year since the 1995-96 Bearkat squad went 18-10. In 24 years at the NCAA Division I level, Sam Houston had posted winning season marks only twice before (18-10 in 1996 and 18-9 in 1988). Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols was the leading scorer for that 1988 squad. The Bearkats 11-5 Southland record marked the Sam Houston women s highest league victory total since 2000. The team s third place finish in the overall Southland standings equaled the 1996 team s performance as the program s highest ever conference finish. Sam Houston opened non-conference play last season with a 6-3 record, the best start for a Sam Houston women s season since 1991. ELEVEN RETURNING LETTER WINNERS Losing only three non-starting players from last year, the Bearkat women are poised to be a factor in the 12 Southland campaign. The Sam Houston women return 64.2 of the 69.3 points they averaged during the 2010-11 campaign and 38.7 of the 42.0 rebounds the Kats pulled down. All five starters return including two All-Southland Conference honorees. BRITNI MARTIN Britni Martin, a 6-0 junior forward from Conroe, Texas, was a firstteam All-Southland selection last year after ranking as the team s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder. She begins her junior year ranked No. 16 in Sam Houston women s basketball career scoring with 787 points for a 13.3 career average. A candidate for Southland Conference Player of the Year honors in 2012, Martin ranked second in the league in three-point field goals, fourth in scoring, sixth in three-point percentage, seventh in assists, eighth in steals, 12th in free throw percentage and 20th in rebounds. Martin is one of five players named to the 2012 preseason All- Southland Conference first team voted by the league s head coaches. SEQUEENA THOMAS Sequeena Thomas, a 6-0 junior forward from Allentown, Penn., was Sam Houston s co-most Valuable Player with Britni Martin last year. Thomas earned second team All-Southland honors. Her league statistical rankings included No. 2 in rebounds, No. 4 in blocked shots, No. 8 in scoring and No. 14 in field goal percentage. She is a 2012 preseason second team All-Southland selection OTHER STARTERS BACK Senior Khamra Echols and juniors Chanice Smith and Clarke Davis completed the Bearkat starting lineup in 2010-11. Echols, a 5-6 point guard from Dallas Skyline, is a three-year letter winner who has scored 508 points in 77 games as a Bearkat. She begins her senior season ranked No. 12 in Sam Houston career assists with 234. Last year she ranked No. 2 in the Southland in both assists per game (4.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.6). Smith, a 5-9 shooting guard from Mansfield Timberview, owns a career scoring average of 10.5 points and has scored in double figures in 36 games during her first two seasons in the Bearkat program. Davis, a 6-0 forward from Mansfield, is a skilled inside player who can score, defend and hit the boards. She averaged 19.1 minutes playing in 29 games as a sophomore and is a two-year starter. OFF THE BENCH Other returning letter winners for the Kats are sophomores Jasmine Johnson, Ashton Jones and Zoe Tucker and seniors Devin Wombles and Lathisa Morgan. The 5-7 Johnson and 5-6 Wombles bring depth on the perimeter while 6-1 Jones, 6-2 Morgan and 6-1 Tucker provide additional firepower under the rim. NEW TO THE BEARKATS The Bearkats have added five new players including three high school signings and two transfers. Angela Beadle, a 6-3 freshman from Austin Crockett, averaged 20.9 points and 14.6 rebounds per game as a senior to earn All-Central Texas and All-District. She brings a strong scoring and rebounding presence to the team. Kaysean Clavelle was the leading scorer for New Orleans large schools as a senior with 22.1 points per game in 2011. The 5-8 guard earned All-State selection in both basketball and volleyball. Jazmin Wiley, a 5-11 guard, averaged15.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists while leading Fort Worth Dunbar to the bi-district playoffs as a senior. She was an All-State, TAPPS 5A All-Tournament and TAPPS 1-5A Defensive Player of the Year for Nolan High School in Fort Worth as a junior. Tanishia Manson, a 6-2 transfer from Arizona Western Junior College will bring offensive punch and rebounding to Kats inside game. She was a twoyear starter, earning All-Conference and All-Region selection. Victoria Gonzalez, a 6-0 forward, joins the Bearkats as a transfer from Texas A&M-Kingsville where she led the Javelinas in shooting percentage and blocked shots.

FOOTBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 16 Alma Mater - Sam Houston State, 1989 Sixth Season at Sam Houston State University HEAD COACH BRENDA NICHOLS When Brenda Welch-Nichols returned to her alma mater as head women s basketball coach on August 23, 2006, there was no question team was a work in progress. Sam Houston had not finished higher than eighth place and had earned a Southland Conference tournament berth only once in the previous six seasons. But five seasons of rebuilding efforts have paid off as Nichols fifth season at Sam Houston in 2010-11 turned out to be a record-breaker. Rolling up a 17-14 overall record, Nichols Bearkats posted their first above.500 year since the 1995-96 squad went 18-10. The Bearkats raced to an 11-5 Southland Conference mark to tie with UTSA as 2011 Southland West Division co-champions. The title is the Bearkats first at the NCAA Division I level. The 11 wins marked the women s highest league victory total since 2000. In 24 years at the NCAA Division I level, Sam Houston had posted winning women s basketball records only twice before (18-9 in 1988 and 18-10 in 1996). Who better to lead the progress of a rebuilding program than Nichols, the leading scorer for the 18-9 squad in 1988. The Sam Houston graduate ranks as one of school s all-time top scorers with a 17.8 career scoring average. She earned All-Southland Conference honors in both 1987 and 1988 and The progress has been deliberate but the team has shown improvement each year. Sam Houston ranked as one of the top 15 most improved programs in NCAA women s basketball in 2008-09. The 2009-10 Bearkat squad just missed a Southland Conference postseason tournament berth placing fourth in the Southland West Division and ending as the odd team out in a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots. In 2010-11, went 8-8 in league action to earn a post-season tournament berth for the first time since 2004. Last year the Bearkats opened nonconference play with a 6-3 record, the best team start since 1991 and equaled its best Southland Conference start ever by winning its first five league games. Prior to returning to Huntsville, Nichols spent four seasons as the head coach at Mercer University in Macon, GA where she constructed a turnaround of the Bear program. In her final year in Macon, the Bears reached the Atlantic Sun conference semifinals, losing by five points in overtime after upsetting number three seed East Tennessee State in the first round. The Bears earned Atlantic Sun tournament berths in each of Nichols four seasons. Prior to her appointment at Mercer, Nichols served as an assistant coach at South Alabama and Memphis and was head coach at Okaloosa-Walton Community College and Western Texas Junior College. Nichols spent three seasons at Okaloosa-Walton Community College, finishing with a 63-27 record and two second-place finishes in the Panhandle Conference. Her 1998-99 squad earned a national ranking as high as fifth and a trip to the NJCAA Regional Tournament. Her first head coaching job was at the school where she began her college playing career, Western Texas. Nichols spent two seasons as head coach there before moving to Okaloosa-Walton. Nichols first collegiate assistant coaching job came at Pensacola Junior College where she served as an assistant for four seasons and helped lead the team to three conference titles in her four years there. As a player, beginning her career at Western Texas in 1985, Nichols lettered two seasons for the Dusters, was named an NJCAA All-American and led her team to a fourth-place national finish. FOOTBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 17 JAMENE CALDWELL As a member of head coach Brenda Nichols staff since she became Sam Houston State University s 10th women s basketball head coach, Jamene Caldwell has been a major factor in turning around a program that had not posted a winning record since 1996 into the squad that won the 2011 Southland Conference West Division championship. Caldwell serves as recruiting coordinator for the women s basketball program and is responsible for opponent scouting and video breakdown. Jamene Caldwell has proved herself as a coach, Nichols said. She is no stranger to me and this program and has helped us bring an extremely talented group of young ladies to Sam Houston State. She will help us continue to move this program in the right direction. In 2011, the Bearkats rolled up a 17-14 overall record to post their first above.500 year since the 1995-96 squad went 18-10. SHSU raced to an 11-5 Southland Conference mark to tie with UTSA as 2011 Southland West Division co-champions. Caldwell has worked with Nichols both as a coach and a player. Caldwell was a four-year letter winner at South Alabama where Nichols was an assistant coach. Later, Caldwell worked two seasons as an assistant for Nichols at Mercer University before coming to Sam Houston State with Nichols in 2006. At South Alabama, Caldwell was a four-year letter winner, ranking as one of the Jaguars all-time leading shot blockers. She played in 102 games during her South Alabama career, scoring 595 points and pulling down 367 rebounds. Caldwell received her Bachelor s degree in political science from South Alabama in 2002. In May 2009, she earned her Masters of Education in Instruction Technology from Sam Houston State University. A native of Bowling Green, KY, Caldwell was an honorable mention All- State and All-District player for Warren Central High School. She played in the Kentucky High School All-Star game and also was an Academic All-State selection. While at South Alabama, she was one of 300 athletes across the nation to be selected to attended the NCAA Leadership Conference in 2000. Jamene is a very talented person with that extra spunk that makes a successful coach, Nichols said. She is has been great here in Huntsville working in the community and with the players and will be a great fit for our program. Caldwell and her husband, Mike, have a two sons, Jalen and Ty. Caldwell is originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky. The 11 wins marked the women s highest league victory total since 2000. In 24 years at the NCAA Division I level, Sam Houston had posted winning women s basketball records only twice before (18-9 in 1988 and 18-10 in 1996). Leslie has been such a great addition to our staff, head coach Brenda Nichols said. She is a quality young coach with experience both at the high school and college level. Her knowledge of Texas high school basketball has been a big plus for our program and bring us a great perspective in recruiting. Prior to joining the Sam Houston staff, Reinecker served as head coach at Prosper, Texas, for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. FOOTBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 18 STATE ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BOBBY WILLIAMS When Bobby Williams became the Bearkats director of athletics on April 29, 1998, he set a goal for the program - to win the Southland Conference Commissioner s Cup symbolic of the league s all-sports championship for both men s and women s sports combined. Sam Houston has won the Commissioner s Cup not once but three times (2005, 2006 and 2007). No other Southland university has won the Cup three years in a row. Williams, who had served Sam Houston as an athletic administrator and a coach since 1982, was interim director of athletics for the 1997-98 school year. He was assistant director of athletics for seven years and an assistant football coach for nine years. In May, 2005, Williams received the General Robert R. With new marketing strategies, Williams and his staff have increased both campus and community attendance at all Bearkat intercollegiate athletics events and increased revenue generated from outside university sources from $600,000 to $2.4 million. Under his direction, the Bearkat Learning Enhancement Center, located in the Bowers Stadium Field House, opened in the fall of 1997. The facility allows Bearkat student-athletes access both to modern computers and to assistance from academic tutors. During his seven years as assistant athletic director, Williams duties included NCAA compliance, game management for home athletic contests, scheduling, facilities, tickets, marketing and concessions. As an assistant football coach, he tutored five cornerbacks who played in the National Football League. Becoming a director of athletics was a lifetime goal. I have always been a goal oriented person, said Williams. As a secondary coach, we set and met important goals on teams that ranked among the nation s defensive leaders. As an administrator, we set goals such as raising our department grade point averages, which we accomplished. As director of athletics, we have set goals. We have strived to bring this department to the forefront in computer technology, to improve our athletes academic standing and retention rates and to increase our revenue through fund raising and monies generated from bigger crowds at games. Three times in recent years, we achieved our most important goal -- winning the Southland Commissioner s Cup All-Sports Trophy. Not only does this achievement prove that each of our sports teams is vital to our program, but also it demonstrates the importance and contributions of every student athlete. Our staff s efforts will continue to be directed toward higher goals as we strive to make the Sam Houston experience the best it can be for our students. Williams was a starter at wide receiver for the Rice Owls. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in 1981 and his Master of Arts from Rice a year later.
