TOL used an eight-run second inning to blow the game open. RHP A.J. Morris was charged with eight runs, but only two were earned. Five pitchers came on in relief, combining for one hit and two runs allowed. At the plate, 2B Carlos Triunfel and LF Jesse Winker each had two hits. C Ramon Cabrera had the lone extra-base hit, a double in the fifth inning. LOU is now 16-19 all-time on Opening Day. OPENING DAY FACTS: LOU is now 16-19 all-time on Opening Day following last night s defeat, incluidng a 5-8 mark away from home and a 2-2 in TOL. They have lost back-to-back games on Opening Day for the first time since 2008 and 2009 (4/3/08 at SYR, L, 2-0; 4/9/09 at COL, L, 12-4). Prior to last season s 13-0 loss vs. TOL, LOU had won three straight openers. APRIL 7 TH WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY: LOU played their fifth opener all-time on April 7 th and are now 2-3 on the day. Two of the three losses have come against TOL ( 16 and 11), with the other coming on Opening Day, 1994 at Iowa. They defeated Buffalo in 1988 and Ottawa in 2005. NEXT MAN UP: LHP Cody Reed makes his Triple-A debut this evening. Reed was one of three prospects that came over to the Reds when CIN traded RHP Johnny Cueto to KC last July. Reed played at two different levels for three different teams in 2015- High-A in the Carolina League with Wilmington (DE), and Double-A with NW Arkansas and Pensacola. Between those three teams, he combined for a 13-9 record and a 2.41 ERA. He is three strikeouts away from 230 in his career. NOT SO GREAT EIGHT: LOU surrendered eight runs in the second inning last night, the first eight-spot an opponent has put up since COL scored nine in the bottom of the eighth on 5/31/14 in game one of a double-header at Huntington Park. COL won that game, 19-3. DEBUTS ALL AROUND: Along with LHP Cody Reed making his Triple-A debut tonight, five of the six LOU pitchers from last night were making their Bats debut. RHP A.J. Morris, RHP Ryan Mattheus, RHP JC Ramirez, and RHP Steve Delabar made their first appearance in a Bats uniform, while RHP Stephen Johnson was also making his Triple-A debut in his first appearance for LOU. TRANSACTIONS: The Cincinnati Reds optioned RHP Robert Stephenson to Louisville after the game last night and purchased the contract of 1B Brandon Allen today as the corresponding move. This will be Allen s seventh stint with a Major League team. Stephenson will not be on LOU s active roster tonight. Also, Hernan Iribarren was transferred from Billings to Louisville and will be active. MORRIS GOES TWO INNINGS: RHP A.J. Morris got the start and lasted two innings last night, throwing 56 pitches. It was his shortest start since 8/4/13 when he pitched an inning and one-third for the Tennessee Smokies, an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. SIX PACK: LOU used six pitchers last night, the first time they have used that many in a nine inning game since 5/17/15 at GWN when six pitchers combined to lead LOU to a 7-4 win. In that game, RHP Donovan Hand threw five and two-thirds innings, with five pitchers coming out of the bullpen to get the win. FEEL THE BRRRRRRRR: Yesterday s game time temperature of 40 degrees was the coldest Opening Day since at least 2005. Opening Day in 2007 (4/5 vs. TOL) held the record previously at 41 degrees. The 40 degrees was LOU s coldest game since 4/26/14 at BUF when the game time temperature was 41 degrees. TOLLLLLEDO: LOU lost their fifth game in a row to TOL, dating back to last season. LOU s last win against TOL came on 8/2 at Louisville Slugger Field, a 4-3, extra inning triumph. The five game slide is the longest against TOL since LOU lost six in a row (including five at TOL) from 7/9-20, 2014. POWER OUTAGE: For the second straight game, the Bats had just one extra base hit. In last year s season finale (9/7 vs. IND), PH Brennan Boesch ended the game and the season with a walk-off double, the only extra base knock for the Bats that day. NO MOYA HITS: TOL RF Steven Moya collected three hits, including two home runs, in yesterday s TOL win. The last opposing batter to hit two home runs in a game was COL s INF Zach Walters, who hit a two run shot and a solo homer on 9/5/15, leading to a COL 7-4 win at LOU. Moya s second home run came off of LOU RHP Stephen Johnson, who was making his Triple-A debut. I D LIKE TO BUY A VOWEL. AN E PLEASE: LOU committed two errors yesterday, with INF Seth Mejias-Brean and OF Kyle Waldrop each having a fielding blunder. Last season, LOU committed multiple errors in 25 games. That translates to a multi-error game 17 percent of the season total, or multiple errors just less than once every six games (5.76).
