The Gamecocks, who received the No. 4 seed, will play against 12 teams at the par-71, 7,286-yard Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club. Five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be held on May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta, Ga. The Regional Lineup The Gamecocks came up just short of winning the program s first-ever SEC title, finishing runner-up to second-ranked Alabama at the 2013 SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga. South Carolina head coach Bill McDonald will look to keep that momentum going with the same lineup from that week. Senior Dykes Harbin will occupy the No. 1 position and will be joined by sophomore Caleb Sturgeon, freshman Matt NeSmith, sophomore Sean Kelly and freshman Will Starke. What They ve Done So Far Senior Dykes Harbin: Second-team All-SEC selection...making 11th straight appearance...leads the team and ranks 16th in the SEC with a scoring average of 72.73...Tied for second on the team with six top-20 finishes... Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon: Making 11th straight appearance...third on the team with a stroke average of 73.30, which ranks 30th in the SEC...Tied for second on the team with six top-20 finishes...also tied for the team lead with two top-five showings, including a win at the Wendy s Kiawah Classic and a runner-up finish at the SEC Championship. History at the NCAA Regionals The Gamecocks are making their 21st NCAA Regional appearance, including their 16th in the last 17 years. Carolina has advanced to the NCAA Championship 16 times, with the last being in 2009. that year. George Bryan IV (T-10th), Mark Anderson (T-18th) and Florian Fritsch (T-18th) all finished in the top 20 to lead the way. The Gamecocks have also finished runner-up in 1999 and 2009. Individually, Kyle Thompson finished first outright in 1999 and tied for first in 2001. A Look Back at the 2012 NCAA Southwest Regional South Carolina finished in eighth place with a 54-hole total of 895 (+31) at the 2012 NCAA Southwest Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla. Wesley Bryan led the way, finishing tied for 18th with rounds of 69-75-77=221 (+5). Breaking Down the Field The 20th-ranked Gamecocks are in a 13-team field that features eight teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50. Fifth-ranked New Mexico received the top seed in the regional and will be joined by No. 8 Stanford, No. 18 Auburn, No. 29 Missouri, No. 32 UNLV, No. 41 Texas Tech and No. 44 Chattanooga. Georgia Southern, San Francisco, Virginia, Charlotte and Valparaiso round out the field. Four teams in the field - New Mexico, Chattanooga, Charlotte and Valparaiso - earned automatic bids after winning their respective conference championships. The Gamecocks faced six teams from the field during the regular season and compiled a 9-5 head-to-head record against those teams. NeSmith, Harbin Earn SEC Accolades Freshman Matt NeSmith was named the Co-SEC Freshman of the Year, and senior Dykes Harbin earned Second-Team All- SEC honors as selected by the league s 14 coaches. NeSmith also earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. He becomes the third Gamecock to receive the SEC Freshman of the Year award, joining former Gamecocks Brent Roof (1997) and Mark Anderson (2005). A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith played in all 10 tournaments this season. He ranks second on the team and 20th in the SEC with a scoring average of 73.00, which is tied for the fourth-best stroke average for a freshman in school history. He recorded a team-high eight top-20 finishes, including six top-10 showings. He closed out the regular season in strong fashion with four-straight top-10 finishes and was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times during that stretch. He tied for 20th at the SEC Championship to help lead the Gamecocks to a runner-up finish. Harbin, a native of Augusta, Ga., is having a stellar run during his final season in Garnet and Black. He leads the team and ranks 16th in the conference with a stroke average of 72.73. He is tied for second on the squad with six top-20 finishes, including a win at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic in the fall. He finished tied for seventh at the SEC Championship to lead the Gamecocks to a second-place finish. Tournament Recaps Gamecocks Knock Off No. 8 Georgia Tech The Gamecocks closed out the regular season in strong fashion, defeating eighth-ranked Georgia Tech in a dual match, 3.5-2.5, at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. The Gamecocks held a 3-2 advantage with sophomore Sean Kelly left on the course in his match with Georgia Tech junior Bo Andrews, as the pair headed to the 18th tee box all square. Both golfers made par to halve the hole, giving Carolina the win. Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon s match with Georgia Tech sophomore Anders Albertson went to the 17th hole with Sturgeon leading 1 up. Sturgeon won the hole to win the match 2 and 1 and secure a point for the Gamecocks. Freshman Matt NeSmith claimed a 2 and 1 victory over Georgia Tech freshman Shun Yat Hak. Freshman Will Starke cruised to a 5 and 4 victory in his match with Georgia Tech s Michael Hines. Senior Dykes Harbin fell in his match with Ollie Schniederjans, 4 and 3, and junior Caulder Moore dropped his match with Tech s Seth Reeves, 7 and 6. Insperity Augusta State Invitational South Carolina posted a final-round 289 (+1) to capture fifth place at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club. The Gamecocks, who now have six top-five finishes this season, wrapped up the weekend with a 54- hole total of 872 (+8) as they finished nine shots back of tournament champion Texas (863). Competing against one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf this season, Carolina placed ahead of eight teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50, including rival Clemson for the third straight tournament. Freshman Matt NeSmith continued his stellar play this weekend as he tied for eighth place for his fourth straight top- 10 finish. Freshman Will Starke delivered the low round of the day for the Gamecocks as he shot a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for 45th with a total of 225 (+9). Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon and senior Dykes Harbin each shot an even-par 72 on Sunday. Sturgeon finished the event in a tie for 28th with a total of 221 (+5), and Harbin tied for 33rd with a total of 222 (+6). Rounding out the lineup for the Gamecocks, sophomore Sean Kelly turned in a final-round 76 (+4) to close out the weekend in a tie for 40th with a total of 223 (+7). Hootie at Bulls Bay The Gamecocks claimed ninth place at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate after wrapping up the tournament with 54- hole total of 905 (+41) at Bulls Bay Golf Club. The Gamecocks finished three strokes ahead of rival Clemson (908). South Carolina freshman Matt NeSmith earned his third straight top-10 finish as he finished his second round with a 72 (E) and fired a final-round 70 (-2) to tie for seventh with a total of 219 (+3). Senior Dykes Harbin came up two strokes shy of a top-20 finish. tie for 27th with a total of 225 (+9). Junior Caulder Moore was the next Gamecock on the leaderboard. Moore closed out the tournament with rounds of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3) to tie for 43rd with a total of 229 (+13). Palmetto Intercollegiate The South Carolina men s golf team was in contention throughout the final round at the Palmetto Intercollegiate but it came up just short down the stretch to finish runnerup for the second straight week with a total of 863 (+23). Coming off a tie for 10th finish a week ago at the USF Invitational, Gamecock freshman Matt NeSmith continued his solid play as he shot a final-round 72 (+2) to finish in a tie for third with a career-low 54-hole total of 209 (-1), which matches the sixth-best total for a freshman alltime at South Carolina. Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon also played solid golf all three rounds as he posted a 72 (+2) to finish 10th with a total of 213 (+3). Junior Caulder Moore recorded his best finish at a team event this season as he tied for 27th with a total of 222 (+12) after shooting a finalround 76 (+6).Sophomore Will Murphy and senior Dykes Harbin both finished in a tie for 36th with a total of 224 (+14). Murphy carded the third best round of the day for the Gamecocks, shooting a 73 (+3), while Harbin turned in a 77 (+7). USF Invitational The South Carolina men s golf team erased a three-shot third-round deficit to tie North Carolina State in the final few holes at the USF Invitational, but it wasn t enough as a late birdie pushed the Wolfpack past the Gamecocks to claim the title at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. South Carolina was tied with North Carolina State at 3-under par with just one player each left on the golf course. Gamecock senior Dykes Harbin, who was 2-under on the back nine through six holes, recorded par on his final three holes to finish the day with a solid 1-under 71. The Wolfpack s Albin Choi made par on the 16th and 18th holes, but it was his birdie at the par-4 17th that lifted North Carolina State to victory. The Gamecocks closed out the tournament in second place with a three-round total of 861 (-3), while the Wolfpack finished with a total of 860 (-4). Four Gamecocks wrapped up the week in the top 20 led by Harbin, who finished tied for second with a total of 211 (-5). Matt NeSmith earned his third top-10 finish of the season with a final-round 71 (-1). NeSmith closed out the week with a career-best total of 216 (E). Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon posted a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish the event in a tie for 14th with a total of 217. Sophomore Will Murphy earned his second straight top-20 finish in a team event by tying for 19th with a total of 219 (+3) after shooting a final-round 76 (+4). Bayou City Collegiate Championships The South Carolina men s golf team made one last charge up the leaderboard, posting a final-round 291 (+3) on its way to claiming third place at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships at Redstone Golf Club. The Gamecocks wrapped up the weekend with a total of 871 (+7). Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Gamecocks move up the leaderboard. Sturgeon earned his second straight top-10 finish as he moved 19 spots up the standings to tie for eighth with a total of 214 (-2). Sophomore Will Murphy came close to carding his third straight round of par or better on the weekend but he fell one stroke short, turning in a 1-over 73. Murphy finished the weekend in a tie for eighth along with Sturgeon with a total of 214 (-2), which is his best collegiate finish when competing at a team event. Senior Dykes Harbin and freshman Matt NeSmith tied for 31st and 39th, respectively. Harbin turned in a 4-over 76 in the final round to close out the weekend with a total of 221 (+5), while NeSmith shot a 1-over 73 to take his final total to 222 (+6). Wendy s Kiawah Classic With its first tournament title in three years on the line, the South Carolina men s golf team left no doubt about which team was going to come out on top as it posted a final-round 284 (E) to cruise to a 20-stroke victory in the Wendy s Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club. The Gamecocks, who had four golfers finish in the top 20, wrapped up the tournament with a three-round total of 859 (+7) to capture their first title since winning the Rees Jones Invitational on Oct. 6, 2009. South Carolina was also represented in the medalist trophy presentation, as sophomore Caleb Sturgeon claimed his first career tournament title following his second round of 68 (-3) of the week. A native of Laurens, S.C., Sturgeon finished the tournament with a career-low 54-hole total of 210 (-3). His closest competitor happened to be wearing garnet and black as well, with freshman Will Starke finishing two strokes back in second place after carding a career-low 69 (-2). Freshman Matt NeSmith and Harbin joined Sturgeon and Starke in the top 20. NeSmith turned in a 4-over 75 to finish tied for sixth with a total of 217 (+4), while Harbin placed 17th with a total of 220 (+7) after shooting a 1-over 72 in the final round. Junior Caulder Moore also had a solid week as he turned in a 76 (+5) to finish in a tie for 49th with a total of 229 (+16). AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic South Carolina senior Dykes Harbin continued to play the best golf of his career as he shot a final-round 72 (+1) to win the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at Berkeley Hills Country Club. Harbin claimed a two-stroke victory over Chattanooga s Steven Fox, Winthrop s Kamito Hirai and Georgia Southern s Scott Wolfes with a three-round total of 210 (-3), which ties a career low. As a team, the Gamecocks posted the sixth best score of the day with a 10-over 294 on their way to finishing in a tie for seventh place with a total of 889 (+37). Sophomore Caleb Sturgeon was the next highest finisher for the Gamecocks as he tied for 31st with a total of 225 (+12). Sturgeon carded a final-round 74 (+3), which included two birdies, five bogeys and 11 pars. Sophomore Will Murphy posted the second lowest score of the day for South Carolina with a 2-over 73. His round consisted of three birdies, five bogeys and 10 pars. Murphy finished the tournament in a tie for 35th with a score of 226 (+13). Rees Jones Invitational The South Carolina men s golf team carded a finalround 305 (+17) on Tuesday to finish in third place at the Rees Jones Invitational at Haig Point Club. The Gamecocks wrapped up the event with a three-round total of 896 (+32), finishing two strokes behind second-place East Carolina (894). Senior Dykes Harbin led the way for South Carolina as he recorded a final-round 77 (+5) to finish sixth with a total of 221 (+5). Freshman Matt NeSmith bounced back from his second-round 78 to post a solid round of even-par 72 on Tuesday. A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith earned his first career top-10 finish as he tied for seventh place with a total of 223 (+7). Senior Dean Hester, who played as an individual, finished in a tie for 13th with a score of 226 (+10) after shooting a final-round 73 (+1). Sophomores Will Murphy and Caleb Sturgeon tied for 15th with totals of 227 (+11). Murphy closed out the tournament with a 76 (+4), and Sturgeon carded an 80 (+8). Sophomore Sean Kelly shot an 82 (+10) on the afternoon to finish 42nd with a score of 235 (+19). Carpet Capital Collegiate The South Carolina men s golf team carded a finalround 294 (+6) to wrap up the Carpet Capital Collegiate in a tie for 11th place on Sunday at The Farm Golf Club. The Gamecocks finished the weekend with a threeround total of 886 (+22). Senior Dykes Harbin and freshman Matt NeSmith both finished in the top 20 to lead Carolina, tying for 14th and 19th place, respectively. Harbin posted the low round of the Gamecocks on Sunday, shooting an even-par 72 to take his three-round total to 216 (E). One of three newcomers on the South Carolina roster this season, NeSmith made a stellar debut as he closed out the weekend with a 3-over 75.
