START RAMP

VOLKSWAGEN MOTORSPORT: RALLYING S HOTTEST PROPERTY Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Pictures: Volkswagen Motorsport AG The world of rallying witnessed history in the making when Andreas Mikkelsen took his Skoda Fabai S2000 to third place in the Power Stage to score a bonus point. Norwegian Mikkelsen set the third quickest stage time through the Circus Maximus speed test in Trier, the final stage of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, despite his car dishing up less power than the headlining World Rally Cars. It was a good way to end the rally, I really enjoyed that stage, said Mikkelsen, who finished seventh overall on the all-asphalt event, one place behind Volkswagen Motorsport team-mate Sebastien Ogier. My first stage victory in a World Rally Car was on this stage in 2008, so it s good fun to come back and get a [bonus] point. It s been a fantastic weekend for our team - sixth and seventh on home soil - and I am so happy to be here with them. We struggled a bit with the set-up, but I am happy with my performance. Ogier, who is combining a programme of WRC events in a Skoda Fabia S2000 alongside developing Volkswagen s Polo R World Rally Car ahead of its competition debut next season, marked his best result of the year to date in sixth. This is one of the most difficult tarmac events on the calendar, but I found an almost perfect rhythm, said the

Frenchman. A bit more power would have been nice, that s why I can t wait to return here next year with the Polo. An exceptional effort from our entire team and the three crews [including Sepp Wiegand who ran under Skoda Motorsport colours on his home event] all the boys have performed very well this weekend, said a very satisfied Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. We may have profited from the retirement of some prominent competitors in the WRC field, but that doesn t take anything away from our performance. Ogier and Mikkelsen drove at a consistently high pace, and Sepp Wiegand also did a great job up until his retirement, after all you have to keep in mind the high expectations on a German driver at his home event. At the wheel of his Škoda Fabia, Sébastien Ogier once again dominated the less powerful S2000 class over the 15 special stages covering 1,110.25 kilometres in total. The Frenchman clinched eleven best times in the class and was ultimately quicker than many other more powerful World Rally Cars. Andreas Mikkelsen was also satisfied with his seventh place, marking his best result by now in an S2000 car in the World Rally Championship. A fantastic weekend for our team. I tried not to lose too much on Ogier and I think my pace was good this weekend. The Michelin tyres for the asphalt stages of the WRC were new for me, remarked the defending champion and points leader of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). Bad luck plagued the youngest member of the Volkswagen team, Sepp Wiegand. The 21-year-old local, who like Mikkelsen contests the IRC with Škoda, was out shortly after heading into SS13 Dhrontal (30.76 km) Suspension damage front right at kilometre six: We were running well up until a tight right-hander where suddenly we heard a big bang, said Wiegand. Obviously we re very disappointed. And his co-driver adds: Our start into the rally was already difficult, we jumped into cold water without the shakedown. But then we quickly found a good speed. The fans, however, helped the crew quickly overcome their disappointment. Crazy, I ve never experienced as much support as here. When we tackled the Panzerplatte I noticed all the flags and banners with slogans. That gave us goosebumps, admitted the young German driver, visibly moved. H&H

IN FOCUS Olympian Nasser Al-Attiyah has returned to the hot seat in his Qatar World Rally Team s Citroën DS3 WRC in Germany. The Dakar Rally winner looked impressively quick on the sealed surface stages, and should be moving higher up the leader board on the remaining four rounds of the World Rally Championship calendar. WRC RALLYE DEUTSCHLAND: LOEB SCORES 74th WIN Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Picture: Citroën Racing, WorldRallyPics There is something spectacular about seeing a rally car hugging the tarmac as it flicks around a hairpin with its tyres puffing white smoke... Witnessing the very best and most skilled in this sport racing against their rivals and the stopwatch at the WRC ADAC Rallye Deutschland this past weekend, we can report that this was the most enthralling story of speed. Sebastien Loeb (Citroën Total World Rally Team) marked the tenth anniversary of ADAC Rallye Deutschland s elevation to the FIA World Rally Championship by winning the asphalt event for a ninth time in his Citroën DS3 WRC with co-driver Daniel Elena.

Is there anyone in the current crop of drivers who can beat Loeb? Yes. Is there anyone in the current crop of drivers who can beat Loeb on his favourite surface? Yes. Is there anyone in the current crop of drivers who has beaten Loeb on his favourite surface on an event he has dominated for nearly a decade? No. The evidence: Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford World Rally Team) was runner-up 02min 00.0sec behind. Sebastien Loeb s performance at this event was simply otherworldly... Loeb raced to set the fastest stage time in SS1, and his rivals struggled throughout the remaining stages to keep pace. He claimed nine of the event s 15 stages, and stamped his trademark style of authority on this event too. This marks his seventh win of 2012 - his fifth on the trot and he now enjoys a 54-point lead in the Driver Championship with four rounds remaining. If our mathematics serves us right, and it usually doesn t, if he wins in next month s Wales Rally GB and team-mate Mikko Hirvonen fails to finish (as he is running second in the Drivers standings), Loeb will have the Championship sewn up with three events left on the caldendar. It was a hard rally, the conditions were extremely difficult, which meant I had some very difficult tyre choices to make, said Loeb. We had a good drive, a perfect car and I made no mistake. Winning the Power Stage also meant this was a perfect weekend. I also had a lot of support from the fans. It was a supreme effort from the Frenchman, leaving his rivals scratching their heads for answers on their speed and cars. However, a brave drive from Latvala secured him his best result on asphalt in the WRC to date. He was pushed from behind by former team-mate Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën Total World Rally Team), who was not able to set the stage times to match his eight-times World Rally Champion team-mate. Yet another impressive drive from Mad Mads Ostberg (Adapta World Rally Team) saw him outpace the factory MINI JCW WRC of Chris Atkinson (WRC Team MINI Portugal) to claim fourth. The Norwegian was yet again the fastest privateer competitor in the WRC this past weekend! Stunning the sport s fans were the two Volkswagen Motorsport-entered Skoda Fabia S2000s piloted by Sebastien Ogier and Andreas Mikkelsen. Sixth and seventh overall, these two crews proved the potential of the S2000 cars once more. In fact, Mikkelsen made history when he set the third fastest time through the Power Stage and was the first S2000 car in the WRC history to do so. The event didn t run all too smoothly for Ott Tanak

and the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team. The Estonian ace set two fastest stage times on Day Two and was running fourth overall for much of the weekend, but this came to nought when he clipped a hinkelstein in the Panzerplatte stages to force his retirement from the event. He restarted the event under Rally 2 on Day Three, but withdrew from competition after the morning s first stage. Team-mate Evgeny Novikov was flying in the top ten overall and was learning the intricacies of this event from stand-in experienced co-driver Nicolas Klinger, but he retired in SS13 with a broken rear differential on his Ford Fiesta RS WRC. The other MINI driver, Prodrive s Dani Sordo, powered to ninth overall after he too restarted under Rally 2 rules on Day Three. Petter Solberg (Ford World Rally Team) crashed heavily in the famous Panzerplatte stages, ripping his right rear wheel off his Fiesta RS WRC. He was able to restart under Rally 2 on Day Three, and he recovered to 11th overall and was left to rue a rally that could have been. After the traditional gravel rally that is Wales Rally GB, the WRC circus once again tastes the tarmac in France and Spain with the Rally Italia Sardegna in between a return to gravel. Will this mean another two sure-bet wins for Loeb? It would be silly to not place your money on this Frenchman... We think even the House does. IRC CZECH RALLY ZLIN: THREE-WAY TARMAC TUSSLE Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Picture: IRC Series The thrilling race for the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) title will step up a gear in Czech Republic this weekend when three of the all-action series best drivers go head-to-head on the testing high-speed stages around the industrial city of Zlín. Defending IRC champion Andreas Mikkelsen, three-time runner-up Jan Kopecký and 2010 winner Juho Hänninen, who also holds the record for the most IRC victories, will all be in action on the Tarmac spectacular, which is set to attract more than 200,000 fans to savour the electrifying atmosphere. Kicking off with a superspecial stage through the heart of host city Zlín in south-east Czech Republic on Friday 31 August, Barum Czech Rally Zlín, a mainstay of the IRC since it began in 2007, will feature 15 stages. The bulk of the competition will take place on Saturday 2 September with four repeated stages. Sunday s route consists of three stages run twice. Each loop concludes with the Maják stage. Maják, which at 23.38km is the longest of the event, returned to the schedule for the first time in 20 years in 2011 although it will run in a reverse direction this season. Once again Otrokovice, a short distance from Zlín, will host the permanent service park and is a must for fans wanting to get close up to the cars and drivers. Barum Czech Rally Zlín is famed for its high-speed stages on bumpy and sometimes broken Tarmac through a mixture of urban areas and narrow woodland stretches where experience and commitment behind the wheel are essential. Although the stages on Saturday and Sunday will ultimately decide the outcome of the rally, Friday night s superspecial in Zlín can t be taken for granted. Run under the cover of darkness, the stage comprises three laps of Zlin s central area and crosses over a railway line at one point. With part of the stage on cobbled streets, grip is at a premium, particularly in the event of rain. Competitors tackle the stage in reverse order from 21h15 local time and crews are released from the start in regular intervals, which means there will be as many as seven cars on the concrete walllined course at any one time. After 1.2 seconds separated Jan Kopecký and Freddy Loix at the finish of last year s Barum Czech Rally Zlín, a similarly dramatic climax is expected to round nine of the IRC this weekend. H&H

PARC FERME

WRC S YOUNG GUNS: QUICK, QUICKER, QUICKEST Words: Handbrakes & Hairpins Pictures: WorldRallyPics, Citroën Racing The sport s next big thing is an all-too-familiar phrase nowadays. We ve all read the reports, seen the interviews and the exciting clips on YouTube, and maybe even bought the Fan Club t-shirts. Growing in confidence and skills on the world stage is a tough ask for any sport athlete, and when one involves as much behind-the-scenes financial backing and muscling as motorsport, driver managers and sponsors need to even more committed to their young guns than ever before. At the top tier of the sport, there is always a steady flow in and out of young talented drivers and co-drivers, but only a few manage to stick around long enough to make an impact on the sport. The reasons are as numerous as the different nationalities competing in the World Rally Championship, but after the most recent ADAC Rallye Deutschland we are able to see the emergence of two drivers who have the backing of the sport s powerhouses behind them. Enter to the boxing ring Mr Tanak, 25 years old and a jockey-sized driver from Estonia. In the other corner is Mr Neuville, 24 years old and hailing from Belgium. This makes for an interesting comparison, a Ford versus Citroën duel of epic proportions. Ott Tanak (M-Sport Ford World Rally Team) this weekend skipped to two stage wins in Germany, outpacing Sebastien Loeb (Citroën Total World Rally Team) on his favourite surface. The blonde driver has now claimed three

stage wins in his short WRC career, while Neuville has claimed two to date. Tanak was spotted by, and has been working with, Markko Martin to increase his skills levels and performance. Through Martin and his own speed and fearless approach to the special stages, M-Sport signed a five-year deal with the Estonian ace at the end of 2011. Thierry Neuville raised eyebrows with his pace in the Junior World Rally Championship in 2010 and developed his speed on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) events that same year and came fighting for the title in 2011 after winning two events. Citroën Racing picked up on this Belgian and has a close eye on his career the last few seasons. Both these rising stars seemingly have their careers plotted out for them into the factory seats at Ford and Citroën, and this is down to the sheer hard work and effort these drivers have put into their rally careers. In the WRC ADAC Rallye Deutschland, Tanak withdrew from the event on Day Two. Neuville too suffered from a crash at this event, but restarted Day Three under Rally 2 rules to bring his DS3 WRC to the finish. As both of these drivers made their debut into the WRC in 2009, it is difficult to not compare the two: this season, Neuville has outpaced Tanak in 5 of 9 events run thus far. However, with these two drivers working closely with the factory team, have the powers that be overlooked two other talents waiting in the wings? Evgeniy Novikov and Mads Ostberg have shown tremendous pace in 2012, with Mads Ostberg fourth overall in the Drviers Championship now only two points behind Ford World Rally Team s Petter Solberg. To boot, Ostberg didn t compete in two of the nine rounds thus far There is no doubting the speed of Tanak and Neuville, but Novikov and Ostberg have outpaced both in the Championship. With four events remaining on the calendar, will Tanak regain the lost ground to rival Neuville? All we know is that we re in for highly entertaining and enthralling rally seasons ahead! H&H
