HARDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2nd grade teacher LeeAnn Hawley performed the Heimlich maneuver recently on a student who was choking on a lifesaver during lunch. She noticed the student crying and gasping for air and she quickly jumped to her rescue. The student coughed up the candy and was very grateful. Her quick response and ongoing student monitoring made all the difference in this situation. ABCD 3 rd Quarter Employee Each quarter Isle of Wight County Schools recognizes a support staff member who has gone Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. Anyone throughout the division is invited to submit nominations. A panel reviews the nominees and selects the quarterly winners. Our 2016-2017 3 rd quarter winner is Jennifer Baker, an Instructional Assistant at Georgie Tyler Middle School. Her nominations stated the following: Alisha Taylor, a teacher at GTMS, stated: Ms. Baker is an attentive, dedicated and compassionate worker who is ready to assist children based on their needs, even before being asked. She works with students on a 1 to 1 or group level and works with patience and grace. She always presents a positive professional demeanor and cares very much for those around her. In working with her for 5 years, I have never heard her complain. Another GTMS teacher, Kyle Barnes, stated, In all of my years of teaching, I have never met anyone as energetic and caring for all students. Ms. Baker helps all students that are in need of any assistance. She offers information and researches information as needed on the spot. She displays enjoyment when she is in the classroom and enjoys learning new things as much as the children. As part of her award, Mrs. Baker will receive a $50 Visa gift card thanks to the generous support of The Woman s Club of Smithfield. Mrs. Baker also receives a framed certificate and a personalized plaque created in the WHS MakerSpace.
