FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEB. 1, 2017 CONTACT: Ryan Koslen (513.497.3132/ryan.koslen@uc.edu) Fickell Announces 2017 Football Signing Class CINCINNATI University of Cincinnati Football Head Coach Luke Fickell announced the Bearcats 2017 signing class Wednesday, the beginning of the NCAA initial signing period for football. UC s football signing day is presented by Nissan. The class features 23 student-athletes, with 11 on defense, 11 on offense and one kicker. Breaking down the class by position, there were six defensive backs, four offensive linemen, three linebackers, two defensive tackles, two quarterbacks, two running backs, two wide receivers, one kicker and one tight end. Rivals.com and Scout.com list the class atop the American Athletic Conference. The Bearcats national class rankings are its highest since 2015. "We were able to sign a great mix of young men from some of the top programs in the state," Fickell said. "We had to get out there and do some work hanging on to the guys we had and finding new ones. If you don't have the types of guys other people are coming after, you're probably not on the right ones. Players from great programs and winning programs bring the culture and attitude we're looking for, which will make our team and program better." Four local recruits headline the class, including LB Kyle Bolden (Colerain), OL Cody Lamb (Miamisburg), K Cole Smith (Middletown) and DB Jarell White (LaSalle). The overall class had an Ohio flavor with 10 signees hailing from the state, including Ohio s 2016 Mr. Football Award winner, RB Michael Warren II (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Central Catholic). "There's an incredible amount of outstanding football players in the state of Ohio," Fickell said. "First and foremost we are going to look at the players in Ohio and see how they fit our needs. Sometimes it's not all about measurables. It's about what's inside that chest. Stars don't always make a great ballplayer." Some other highlights from the class include transfer QB Torrance Gibson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage/Cincinnati State), DB RJ Potts (Indianapolis, Ind./Fishers), DT Ben Hutch (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) and WR Javan Hawes (Atlanta, Ga./Sandy Creek). TE Wilson Huber's father Daryl played tight end for the Bearcats in the late 1980s and was a captain in 1988. Three members of the class, RB Jaelen Greene (Atlanta, Ga./Sandy Creek), Lamb and OL Blake Yager (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll/Iowa Western) are on campus already and will participate in spring football. Fickell was hired on Dec. 10, 2016 and in the span of less than eight weeks has hired a staff and put his first recruiting class together. "We had two objectives in our first few weeks here," Fickell said. "We had to make sure we got to know and take care of our current team on campus. They're the core of our team and who we will have success with. And we had to make sure recruiting was the next thing in line. The first recruiting phase is coming to a conclusion today. But it never ends. We have to continue to do our best work in Cincinnati, in Ohio and in that 500-mile radius around our campus. People need to know who we are and what we are all about." Look for exclusive coverage on GoBEARCATS.com/signingday and follow the football team on social media at twitter.com/gobearcatsfb, Instagram.com/gobearcatsfb and facebook.com/gobearcatsfootball. UC is tentatively scheduled to start spring practice on Monday, March 6, 2017. Details for the annual spring game will be announced once they are finalized. New season ticket deposits for the 2017 football campaign can be made online at GoBEARCATS.com/tickets or by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Season ticket renewals will go out in February with the opportunity for seat upgrades occurring later in the spring. -GoBEARCATS.com-
