AGENDA ITEM #: 11.4 Town of Coaldale Sport and Recreation Needs Assessment Survey Draft summary of outcomes November 2018 SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES Participants 1310 visitors with visitors being defined as all unique visits to the survey page 863 participants with participants being defined as those who completed the survey Notes Based on a review of network ID data and IP addresses, two measures of whether multiple responses were logged from the same device, there appears to be a small portion of the 863 responses that may have entered multiple responses from the same device. Some of this can be accounted for by recognizing that multiple people in the same household could enter responses on one device. However, there is still a portion of the multiple responses that may be considered duplicate entries. The percentage of potential duplicate entries appears to be less than 5 percent of the total of all respondents. PAGE 1 OF 15

This is demonstrated by the fact that the third most popular answer to how do you recreate is ice arena sports but the areas respondents wish to spend money is primarily on a field house and indoor swimming pool. SUMMARY OF WRITTEN RESPONSES Sport and Recreation Needs Assessment Survey Comments from Screen 2 (How do you recreate?) 1 The town doesnt have enough man power to maintain the green spaces it has, take care of that problem and hire more staff! 2 An indoor pool with lane swim times would be amazing! 3 Fishing 4 we need a complex with a second sheet of ice, an indoor sports house an indoor pool for year round use. having to drive to Lethbridge to use the pool facilities is inconvenient and we would utilize it more if it were here in Coaldale. 5 This pool would be used year round if it were indoors and tied in with the other facilities. 6 Do whatever keeps these people-kind off the Highway. 7 Ride my bicycle around my neighborhood, Walk around my neighborhood, walk on my treadmill in my garage 8 GO public skating with my grandchildren at the Coaldale Arena 9 My grandchildren enjoy the swimming lessons and swimming at the Coaldale Pool in the summer. 10 It would be great if the pool got upgraded. A hot tub are would be great and upgraded change rooms 11 Fields are maintained decently but is frustrating when kids games like football get cancelled because the town closes the field with a little rain. Unfortunately this is a sport that is played in all weather conditions and is frustrating when you lose games due to those decisions. 12 In a town whos population is rapidly approaching 10 thousand residents, it doesn't make sense to continue to pour tax payer dollars into a pool that is over 40 years old and is only open 4 months a year and has no shelter from the sun or rain. While building and maintaining an indoor pool is expensive, if done right you could incorporate many options in the building, allowing senior's activities, physio use, aqua exercise, swimming lessons, birthday parties, perhaps a tot play area, racquetball and squash courts, fitness equipment and other such ideas and be able to generate income and utilization 365 days a year. In fact if enough thought was put into it, this could be a place where people from other towns including Lethbridge may want to visit and enjoy. 13 spray park parks 14 to many sports allow drinking and then the town is unsafe for the residents. smashed beer bottles theft etc 15 Get better seats/heat 16 Fish pond 17 Better food with low cost to us not them 18 Walking with dog off leash. 19 I have been a supporter of the Coaldale Copperheads for 9 years & seen the organization & support by the local community grow year on year, after traveling to away games, it is noticeably clear that Coaldale has the best supporters in the league but also requires a larger more up to date arena 20 Myself & my family often go swimming, but usually travel to Taber for this due to them having a covered pool which we are able to take advantage of year round 21 Is there any possibility of getting a tennis court back in Coaldale? It is kind of annoying just to have to drive to Lethbridge to play for an hour. PAGE 8 OF 15

22 Yoga 23 Would love to see more walking/bike paths that are away from traffic 24 Walking paths 25 Better price food/drinks 26 Hockey 27 Soccer 28 Out Door Arena for Ball Hockey 29 fishing 30 Camping 31 Motocross 32 Coaldale Pool needs more areas of shade! 33 Fielshouse 34 Golf 35 Would be good to have some connecting cycling trails in town! 36 An indoor pool would mean a lot fewer trips to Lethbridge! 37 The pool is in awful shape. Needs: larger facilities, indoor?, kiddie pool area, hot tub, etc. It was open for one month less this summer and yet fees were higher! Sadly we chose not to purchase for this reason for the first in many years. Swimming lessons are also getting to expensive and we go elsewhere. 38 Skateboarding 39 Enough surveys bulid the kis of this town a new rink or 2. Not enough ice time for the kids to develop properly 40 Would love to see more bike paths in Coledale on the outskirts to ride around 41 Fishing 42 A facility where the court could be rented for volleyball, basketball, badminton etc. Would also love to see a convertible squash/racquetball court located within the Town for court time rental. 43 An indoor swimming pool similar to Taber that could be utilized year round. We used to drive out to Taber when the children were young to go to parent and tot swim during the day. We still drive out to Taber in the fall and winter to swim out there. A very far reaching wish list item would be a facility with a flow rider (see Great Falls Electric City Waterpark). 44 It would be nice to have a continuous wide paved path for these activities around the Town. 45 I think we have pretty good fields in Coaldale when they are properly maintained. It would be nice to see a beach volleyball court maintained for public use. 46 Soccer and baseball 47 Would love an indoor pool centre. Similar to the one in Merritt BC would be great 48 We use the arena weekly as family recreation, as well as for regularly slotted hockey practice and games. As a family we seek out additional ice time in lethbridge and taber because of the lack of availability in Coaldale. Ever thought of hosting public roller blade skate in the summer? I'm sure it'd be a hit in the community. 49 on waiting list for women`s ice in Coaldale for 3 years 50 we should get more classes during the day for stay home mom 51 I only walk and cycle. All others do not affect me. 52 Henderson pool family pass is $15 in Coaldale is $19 really? 53 every year you increase hockey fees and every year kids have less ice time 54 Tae Kwan do 55 indoor Basketball open gym areas are needed PAGE 9 OF 15

56 it does not matter what anybody says, you councilors and administrators will do what ever you want 57 Indoor swimming pool for all seasons with aquafit 58 this survey will not allow me to drag field sports above the line 59 We desperately need an indoor pool for Aquafit, senior physical therapy and student swim lessons. 60 Coaldale needs an Indoor Soccer facility. 61 an area to warm up in on cooler days such as a sauna or hot tub is recommended. We don't really need a new indoor pool: the yearly operational costs would be terribly expensive. 62 a bike path around the town would be amazing, and we are very excited about the proposed path from Coaldale to Lethbridge 63 would love the opportunity for there to be recreational badminton, for example 64 The people of Coaldale shouldn't have to go to(sometimes SMALLER )surrounding towns for year round swimming activities. Especially because swimming is an activity for all ages and abilities 65 We need more, easily affordable, fitness opportunities for seniors and people with disabilities and mobility issues. There are a lot of people who are not able to get out of town for their excersize 66 Countrydance 67 Countrydance, zumba, brakedance 68 We need a indoor swimming pool 69 Skateboarding 70 As Coaldale is full of young families and young seniors who would benifit from an indoor pool providing senior swims and family swim and would allow the town to rent out for parties and school all y at round and would allow to have swimming lessons go year round 71 More walking/ biking paths that connect the whole town. A path that goes around the perimeter of town would be awesome 72 For our younger people I d like to see a small mountainbike park. Also we do needs separate bike path system. 73 It would be nice to have some kind of indoor walking for winter and safe outdoor walking in summer. Our streets are in pretty rough shape when I had to walk after surgery...had to really watch as it was pretty unsafe 74 This should be new the old one is gross, not clean and smells bad 75 We need an indoor pool 76 I like to do a lot of walking, and running, but the paths that we have don t have any lighting! The path behind the health care centre and behind the arena are nice but no lighting what so ever. 77 The only thing really to do during winter here in town is hockey and skating. it would be great to see a sportsplex with an indoor pool so we could go swimming all year round. Put it all in one building, And make everyone happy 78 Sing in an organized chorus 79 Meet acquaintances for a meal or coffee 80 Get together with others for games or to watch a show 81 Photographing nature 82 Goechaching 83 Indoor pool 84 It would be nice to have more paved walking paths 85 We need an indoor pool PAGE 10 OF 15

86 Automotive / racing 87 Camping 88 Indoor pool would be great and swimming lessons for kids too. 89 Fishing 90 A squash court would be very well used, a bunch of guys from Coaldale travel to Lethbridge often to play squash. 91 An indoor swimming pool would be an amazing asset to Coaldale. We currently travel to Lethbridge or Taber to use their indoor pools and would love to be able to stay in Coaldale to take swimming lessons year round. 92 Indoor pool would be great to have. Please, please, please. PAGE 11 OF 15

Comments from Screen 3 (Barriers to recreating) 1 Having an indoor swimming pool would keep Coaldale residents in Coaldale instead of driving into Lethbridge. 2 need a second sheet of ice, an indoor pool, and indoor sports house like a basketball court. Or just simply a place for the little ones to wear them self's out while being active. 3 having to drive to Lethbridge to use the facilities there is definitely a barrier 4 an after school program for the kids to play sports or go swimming would be a healthy and active alternative to what there is now. 5 I my self don't have an issue with this, but I know family members that do and would benefit from a program aimed at getting them active while keeping their abilities in mind. 6 I would get involved in more, if there were more programs to be involved in. 7 IT would be great to get a new indoor pool built with recreational facility such as gymnasium, ofr basketball, volleyball or floor hockey, a weight room, walking/running track. 8 The current arena is not big enough for our population. There is lots of interest for adult ice sports, such as woman s hockey, adult figure skating, men s hockey leagues, etc. But not enough hours In the day to facilitate. So residents have to go elsewhere. 9 Kids sports seem to be really expensive 10 No decent facilities in Coaldale 11 We would swim may more often if we didn't need to drive 20 minutes each way. As is, we make it out to Taber about weekly. 12 Travel time to the pool means less times swimming for our family. 13 We could use some more connected paths like the one by the hub/arena. Something for biking would be nice too. 14 work gets in the way. eg july 1 we all work and will miss out on the fun 15 to do it with,, friend,,,, 16 The town of Coaldale really needs to expand their arena. New seating, more ice. Would love to attend more copperheads games but they are so late because of minor hockey. 17 Indoor pool would be very stimulating year round! 18 Better heat with better seating not rock hard seating 19 We need more seating in the area and comfortable seats plus the heating system needs sorting out we support the copperheads and have done for 8 years. We have seen the number of supporters rise drastically and we need the council to get on board and support their local boys more. 20 Very limited yoga opportunities 21 Coaldale is falling behind as far as facilities go, old out dated and most of all VERY POORLY maintained. 22 More family things 23 More variety in sports such as lacrosse, or community basketball leagues in varying ages would be nice 24 The skatepark in town dilapidated, and dangerous due to this. Apart from this it is very small and doesn t have much available for someone looking to practice let alone compete. Updating or making a new skatepark offers more youth and young adults a form of outdoor recreation, and can brinncommerce to town with competitions through borderline and other skateboarding companies. Taber and lethbridge both have much better skate parks, but it can be hard for newer youth to the sports used there to get in and learn, let alone for parents to PAGE 12 OF 15

have the time to drive their kids out of town to use them. Something more safe and updated that is local would greatly benefit the youth in the area. Also some sort of outdoor walking path, indoor walking/running path that can be used in bad weather and winter, and an indoor pool where families can use it year round in town would all also be great facilities this town would benefit from. 25 It can be hard to make it to the facilities outside of town for recreation in the evenings after work. Having more local options that are open later would benefit many residents. 26 Offering free beginner classes in many things such as organized sports, yoga, dance, etc. Would help to motivate others by helping teach how to do these things without having to put too much money in only finding out after that itnisnt for you. Then offer classes or groups that cost for the next levels or anything after first class etc. 27 Every age in our community from infant to senior would benefit from an indoor pool. 28 Must travel to use an indoor pool 29 Cost prohibitive for many to travel to another community for an indoor pool 30 Can only do so much, time and money 31 I would love to see a place where we could dance in town! My fiance and I love to dance (jive and two-step) but opportunities are poor in Coaldale. 32 An Indoor pool would serve Coaldale well. 33 Not enough walking, biking, running trails around town. It would be nice to see a paved pathway near the canal on the south side of town, the canal bank is used by many. 34 Commute to an indoor soccer facility is extensive! 35 It would be great to offer adult programs! 36 No extra gym time in Coaldale for adult use! 37 Please think about the community needs (facilities) and not the agenda of one well connected developer/ business that says we need indoor soccer. All ages can swim. 38 Would like to see a nice indoor pool - Coaldale seems big enough to have one. Would be nice if it also had an indoor playground for little ones. More walking trails would be nice as well. 39 Would like to see a nice indoor pool - Coaldale seems big enough to have one. Would be nice if it also had an indoor playground for little ones. More walking trails would be nice as well. With all due respect, I would much rather my tax dollars go towards amenities that will make life in Coaldale more pleasant for my family, rather than wasted fighting cannabis (which I do not use and do not intend to). 40 Would like to see a nice indoor pool - Coaldale seems big enough to have one. Would be nice if it also had an indoor playground or small gym for little ones and perhaps an area with fitness equipment for adults. Would be nice to have a fitness facility the whole family could enjoy. Getting a memberships at Twisted Steel isn't very cost effective, and our 5 year old can't make use of it. More walking trails would be nice as well. With all due respect, I would much rather my tax dollars go towards amenities that will make life in Coaldale more pleasant for my family, rather than wasted fighting cannabis (which I do not use and do not intend to). 41 Aquatic programs in an indoor pool!! 42 Water fit classes year round! 43 Current Skate-park is designed horrible. It's mostly grass. You can't skate on grass. Most roads and sidewalks in town are either falling apart or covered in gravel. 44 Would be nice to have an indoor pool for year round fun. Also a gradual depth for parents with small children. 45 Some of the programs are a little pricey especially for beginner sports for kids. And if not available here which happens lots, the need to drive to lethbridge PAGE 13 OF 15

46 Most programs for younger children are scheduled during the day or right at 430,5pm. Some parents do work until 5 which limits what programs their children can attend. 47 Can you please fix the tennis courts! You cannot play tennis on them and we have to drive all the way to Lethbridge to play tennis! 48 The lack of indoor recreation for the winter months is a huge drawback. So only Facilities and Program availability apply to me here 49 Indoor soccer during off season, with lethbridge is usually very busy with booked times at their facilities. 50 I have family who live in bc in a town half the size of Coaldale and they have a great indoor community pool, that offers a full size pool along with a kiddie pool, and lazy river. Fantastic community resource. 51 To go swimming in an indoor pool always requires a drive to Lethbridge or Taber. I don't care to swim in the outdoor pool but my boys are there most days of summer. If they want to go swimming other than in summer it requires a lot more time, energy and money to go to another city. 52 A swimming pool with steps down into the pool is much easier to get into. 53 Lack of availability for ice time. 54 This can be difficult for a young family. I work 8-5 and many programs only offer 1 option in small community which is usually right after school for the younger kids. (More time slots or offer sessions that can be offered at different times) 55 We are an active family. Maybe I don't know about all the possibilities in the community. I am not on social media. Does the website provide links to all the recreational option available in our community? 56 Need more ice time for hockey and an indoor swimming pool 57 An indoor year-round open pool would be wonderful for the community. 58 we do all our sport activities in Lethbridge because is always cheaper and better 59 We live on the east side of Leth. Would be easier to travel to Coaldale than W.Leth. to swim & use exercise facilities 60 Must swim in an indoor facility and currently use pools in Lethbridge. It would be great if the handicapped subsidy available in Lethbridge for handicapped individuals applied to Coaldale resident. 61 The gymnasiun at the Southside Leth YMCA will be closing & the West side is too far to drive for open gym for basketball.lethbridge is always short on gyms for current basketball programs.it would be nice if Coaldale had an indoor soccer area like the Lethbridge orion sport center & if there was at least a half court and a basketball hoop for indoor basketball that would be nice(full court for basketball is even better.) 62 Would be nice to swim in the winter - indoor pool! 63 The regular public swim or lane swim times are too limited, and not available year round. 64 Need more sports for younger kids. Suvhvas basketball and volleyball before grade 6 65 Maybe you should say what would be included in a multi sports facility 66 There needs to be an indoor pool. The pool is busy all summer long, and would continue to be busy through the winter. 67 this survey is a joke. just like previous surveys the town will not listen anyhow. what a waste of everyones time. 68 Indoor swimming pool would allow for all season swimming 69 Some of the program times are too early during the week to participate in due to work 70 Yes 71 Yes 72 That could help PAGE 14 OF 15

73 Not available in Coaldale 74 Not available in Coaldale. Can't afford to go back and forth to Let bridge regularly 75 I would love an indoor swimming pool. Taber is the most kid-friendly one around here and while it is well worth the drive it sure would be nice to have one in coaldale one day! Especially if it were to offer swimming lessons and mom + tot swimming :) 76 An indoor pool and an indoor playground would be great for kids for in the winter. 77 Right now we drive to Taber to use the swimming pool because with younger children it s nice to have the indoor pool and a special kids pool, not just a shallower end of the deep pool. 78 Would love to see an indoor pool in Coaldale that offers lessons. 79 No campground 80 I like to get together with family in the summertime in a camping situation and there's no campground. 81 Work takes up most of my time and everything closes when I get home. 82 with gas prices so high and almost everything else hard to get into sports for me and my family. 83 The streets are too dark to walk in the dark 84 An indoor pool would be super beneficial and would be used greatly during the winter months. Lots of young families in Coaldale that would use it recreationally as well as for swimming lessons. 85 We take our bikes to Lethbridge to cycle. A path to Lethbridge would be great. 86 Need an indoor swimming pool! Having a swimming pool that is only open 2 months of the year is just not enough! 87 Need an indoor swimming pool! Having a swimming pool that is only open 2 months of the year is just not enough! A gym for kids to do gymnastics would also be a great asset to Coaldale. 88 Swimming lessons year round, gymnastics for kids 89 Time: pool needs more times for lane swimming or adults only swimming PAGE 15 OF 15
