IN THE NATION After USC s upset win over No. 15-ranked rival UCLA on Jan. 10, the omen of Troy had risen to rank No. 25 in the nation in the AP poll on Jan. 11 USC s first national ranking since 2014. This week, however, USC has fallen out of the rankings, but is still receiving votes in the AP poll. USC also weighs in at No. 17 on the latest RPI list as of Jan. 19. Stanford ranks highest at No. 12 in this week s AP poll and is No. 14 in the USA Today Coaches poll. Cal is unranked. LAST EEK USC had a rough road trip through ashington last week, falling 73-61 at SU and dropping a 69-60 loss at ashington. USC was without the services of two starters for the trip, with Jordan Adams and Brianna Barrett both currently sidelined with eligibility issues. On Friday in Pullman, a cold second half was the undoing of the Trojans in the 73-61 loss to host ashington State. USC had a strong first-half showing, but the depth of the Cougars helped the hosts pass up the Trojans more 2015-16 USC omen s BasketbalL Page 1

It was cold and snowy outside, but the omen of Troy managed to stay warm enough to stay out ahead of their hosts in the first half of action in Pullman. USC shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play to outpace the Cougars 42 percent and take a 38-31 lead into the locker room at the break. Things took a turn on the Trojans in the second half, however. Five minutes of ice-cold shooting from the floor by USC helped feed a Cougar run to the lead in the third. By the final buzzer, SU had nine players on the scoresheet to six Trojans. USC s shooting also had cooled to 30% in the last 20 minutes to finish out at 39% from the floor, while the Cougars finished at 49%. Twenty Trojan turnovers also fueled SU s comeback effort, though the teams finished up near even on the boards. USC had four players score in double figures, led by Kristen Simon s 19 points along with 10 apiece from Sadie Edwards, Aliyah Mazyck and Temi Fagbenle. Fagbenle also tore down 15 rebounds for the Trojans to notch her third consecutive double-double. Two days later in Seattle, USC was undone by a rough third quarter in an otherwise strong road showing at ashington. The Huskies capitalized on Trojan misses in the third to turn a 10-point USC halftime lead into seven-point U advantage on the way into the final frame. USC s Temi Fagbenle shouldered the load for the Trojans today, turning in an 11-of-12 effort from the floor to finish with a career-high 25 points while notching her fourth straight double-double with 14 rebounds. USC s Fagbenle had over half her team s points by the break, pumping in 19 first-half points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, to help USC lead 34-24 at halftime. After shooting 43 percent in the first half, USC wound up off-kilter in the third quarter. The Trojans managed only seven points while U forged ahead and stayed there. USC would get its feet back underneath it in the fourth, but U was well in control by then. USC finished out the game shooting 40% from the floor while the Huskies picked up the pace and finished at 49% after their 64% second-half effort. ashington also won out on the boards 34-26 and drained seven 3-pointers on 11 tries. USC, by comparison, hit five threes but misfired on 23 attempts. COOP S COUNT GROS USC s 74-67 comeback win over visiting Oregon on Jan. 4 not only got the Trojans first Pac-12 win on the board, it marked Cynthia Cooper-Dyke s 200th career victory as a head coach. Cooper-Dyke got all hands on deck in the landmark victory, with eight Trojans in on the scoring action, including double-digit efforts from her own hand-picked additions Temi Fagbenle and Aliyah Mazyck. Cooper-Dyke now holds a 201-138 career record as a head coach. Now in her third season at USC, Cooper-Dyke is 51-32 at Troy. STRONG START USC posted a powerful 12-0 start to the 2015-16 season, doubling up on its most recent best season start of 6-0, last hit in 1993-94 with Cheryl Miller as head coach. That year also was the last time USC finished in first place in the Pac-10 conference. The 12-0 start also bettered another USC benchmark, last achieved in 1984-85 when Linda Sharp s omen of Troy opened up the season 10-0. USC s best-ever start was set in 1981-82 with an 18-0 mark to start Cynthia Cooper s freshman season at USC. USC s previous significant undefeated starts came in 1993-94 (6-0), 1985-86 (6-0), 1984-85 (10-0), 1983-84 (10-0), 1982-83 (13-0) and 1981-82 (18-0). hen USC hit 9-0 this season, the Trojans were named the NCAA.com Team of the eek on Dec. 14. NATIONAL ATTENTION The numbers the Trojans are pinning up are registering in the national stat sheets. Now 14-4 overall, USC s defense ranks No. 39 in the nation, having held opponents to just 56.1 points per game. USC s average margin of victory of 15.8 points is 19th best in the land. The Trojans are averaging 10.3 steals per game to rank No. 35 in the nation in that category. Individually, senior Brianna Barrett ranks highest at No. 23 in the nation with her 5.8 assists per game. USC BY THE NUMBERS Led by Temi Fagbenle s team-high 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, the omen of Troy are putting up some big numbers in 2015-16. USC has beaten six teams by at least 30 points and went a season-best 50 percent from the floor in another big win over visiting UNLV. In all, USC has three players averaging double digits, and three with at least 7.5 rebounds per game. The tightly knit group of scoring leaders has Fagbenle on top with 14.1 ppg followed closely by Kristen Simon and Jordan Adams. Sidelined for six games this season to date, Adams is averaging 12.8 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Simon is No. 3 on the scoring sharts with 12.6 ppg and is USC s second leading rebounder at 8.5 rpg. Aliyah Mazyck, Sadie Edwards and Courtney Jaco are just outside the double-digit scoring zone. Mazyck and Edwards are putting up 8.9 ppg apiece, and Jaco is ay 8.7 ppg. Sharpshooter Jaco had her 14-game 3-point scoring streak come to a close on Jan. 2 but still leads the Trojans with 40 threes nailed this season. USC s top distributor is easily Brianna Barrett, who had been serving up 5.8 assists per game before missing the first game of her USC career on Jan. 15 due to eligibility issues. As a team, USC is averaging 71.9 points per game, shooting.422 from the floor and.706 from the free-throw line. USC is outrebounding opponents 700-601 and defensively has held opponents to just 56.1 points per game. TEMI TAKES THE STAGE Post player Temi Fagbenle picked up honors as the Pac-12 Player of the eek on Jan. 11 after a particularly powerful performance in two big conference victories in the previous week. Fagbenle is the first Trojan to win the award in almost two years, when Cassie Harberts earned the honor on Jan. 20, 2014. Fagbenle, a grad student in her first season at USC, tacked up back-to-back double-doubles in USC s two Pac-12 wins. Her dominance on the boards and offensive power in the paint were key in notching a 75-67 win over Oregon and a 71-68 victory over rival UCLA. Against the Ducks, Page 2 2015-16 USC omen s BasketbalL

USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC Fagbenle delivered 19 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. In the rivalry clash against the Bruins, Fagbenle went bigger. She set the tone for the Trojans in snagging 12 of her final 15 rebounds during the first half of action. Later, in the fourth quarter, Fagbenle provided the offensive spark that the Trojans needed in scoring USC s first eight points of the quarter to build a strong lead for the Trojan cause. Fagbenle would finish out the win with 20 points to go with her 15 boards. Fagbenle currently leads USC in scoring and rebounding with 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. In Pac-12 play to date, Fagbenle also is averaging a team-best 17.2 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. SIMON STEPS UP Sophomore Kristen Simon has made this season her time to shine as she has come up big in her role down low. Increased minutes and increased confidence has seen the sophomore almost double her production from her freshman season. Simon has bumped up her scoring numbers from 6.7 points per game as a freshman to stand as USC s third leading scorer this season with 12.6 ppg. On the boards, Simon has upgraded her tally from 5.5 rebounds per game to stand at No. 2 on the boards for the Trojans with 8.5 rpg this season to date. A full-time starter now, Simon is putting in 29.2 minutes per game to overmatch last season s 17.3 average minutes played. She s also recorded her first career double-doubles in her sophomore campaign, holding five so far and boasting a total of 13 games in which she s scored in double figures. THREE-POINT THREATS Junior Courtney Jaco USC s returning top gun from 3-point range has some new backup beyond the arc in sophomore Sadie Edwards and freshman Aliyah Mazyck. Jaco already is well on her way to beating out her season-best mark of 48 threes nailed last season. She s hit 40 to date and continues to climb in the USC career charts. Now with 113 career 3-pointers hit, Jaco stands alone at No. 8 all-time in that category, and her sharpshooting also has her No. 4 all-time in career 3-point percentage at 36.3%. Jaco, Edwards and Mazyck have proven a potent tandem for the Trojans this season. Edwards, who became eligible for action on Dec. 18 after coming to Troy last season as a midyear transfer from UConn, has stepped into her role and nailed nine threes in her seven games played to date. Mazyck, meanwhile, hit her first career three in her second game as a Trojans and never looked back. The freshman has hit 17 threes so far, averaging one a game for the Trojans to date. Not to be counted out from 3-point land is redshirt junior Jordan Adams, who has found her scoring touch from distance and has hit 13 threes in 12 appearances this season. That count is a significant upgrade from past seasons. Adams hit six as a redshirt freshman and a total of nine last season. TROJANS AT A GLANCE Cynthia Cooper-Dyke and her returning staff of associate head coach Beth Burns and assistants Jualeah oods and Taja Edwards have constructed a 2015-16 group of omen of Troy with great potential to improve on last year s 15-15 finish. USC graduated its top scorers and rebounders Kaneisha Horn and Alexyz Vaioletama -- who provided 12.0 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, along with 6.9 rebounds per game apiece from last year s squad. Replacing those veterans may not be easy, but Cooper-Dyke is happy with her new roster of players and expects to fill the statistical void that the departed players have left. In fact, she sees this group of Trojans as decidedly capable of making a strong run in the Pac-12 and beyond. Five omen of Troy return from last year s roster, with Jordan Adams, Brianna Barrett and Courtney Jaco standing out as the only players with at least two seasons of work under their belts at Troy, but they also boast winning experience as members of the 2014 Pac-12 Tournament Championship team. Returners Alexis Lloyd and Kristen Simon played their first seasons as Trojans last year. As the veterans of the bunch, that group is joined by a solid seven new Trojans two transfers, three international additions, one California product and one North Carolina native. ORLDLY OMEN OF TROY The international flavor coming to Troy this season adds a new element to the USC gameplan. In the recent past, no more than one international player has been on a USC roster at a time. This year, USC welcomes Candela Abejón from Spain, Dani Milisic from Australia and Khaedin Taito from New Zealand. Milisic has recently joined the Trojans as a Spring 2016 enrollee. Two more Trojan newcomers also have strong ties overseas. A 2012 Olympian for Great Britain, Temi Fagbenle was raised in London and her family now lives in Nigeria. She joins the Trojan Family with one year of eligibility left after finishing her degree at Harvard. True freshman Marguerite Effa, meanwhile, also has roots in Africa, having lived in Cameroon before moving to California, where she attended high school. STICKING STATESIDE USC s two homegrown newcomers are true freshman Aliyah Mazyck from Charlotte, N.C. and Connecticut transfer Sadie Edwards, who joined the omen of Troy in January 2015 and became eligible for competition on Dec. 17. COMMITTED! The USC women s basketball program will grow four players stronger with the signing of a solid set of new omen of Troy set to come to campus in 2016. ith national letters of intent signed and delivered on Nov. 11, USC head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke and her coaching staff are proud to announce the addition of Valerie Higgins, Asiah Jones, Minyon Moore and Ja Tavia Tapley to the USC program next season. In all, the stellar new class weighs in at No. 7 in the nation according to Blue Star and No. 10 according to espn HoopGurlz. A 6-0 guard, Higgins is a Southern California product who has a laundry list of accolades from her prep career at Chaminade College Prep and with the Nike Cal Stars club team. Named to the All-CIF First Team, she also has been named SoCal Player of the Year and was ranked as an ESPN Top-10 ing. She s put up big numbers, too, averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals per game. A two-time Nike EYBL National Champion, Higgins also helped lead her Chaminade Prep squad to a 27-4 record while grabbing two wins over top-ranked Mater Dei last season. A 6-3 forward, South Carolina product Jones is coming off a junior season at oodmont High in which she averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds per game. She also has notched a career-high nine blocks in a single game, a testament to her size and skill that makes her a powerful addition to the Trojan gameplan. A Northern California product, 5-8 guard Moore comes to Troy from Salesian High in the Bay Area. A proven producer, Moore averaged 14 points, 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds per game and helped lead Salesian to the North Coast Section Division IV Championship. A 6-3 forward, Tapley joins the Trojan Family from Florida. The out-of-state import will be at home among the well-traveled omen of Troy, who will have nine different states and overseas nations represented when Tapley joins the crew along with fellow signee and South Carolina product Jones. Tapley ranks as the No. 39 overall prospect in the nation and stands as the No. 6 small forward in the land. An All-State First Team selection in 2015, Tapley is sure to bring a powerful presence to USC next season. LAST SEASON USC finished up the 2014-15 season with a 15-15 overall record in head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke s second season at Troy. The Trojans had posted a 7-11 record in Pac-12 play and were the No. 8 seeded team in the 2015 Pac-12 Tournament. USC would fall in the first round of the tourney, ending a tough season for the Trojans, who had entered the tournament as the defending champions. Seniors Alexyz Vaioletama and Kaneisha Horn wrapped up their Trojan careers with All-Pac-12 honors. Vaioletama landed a spot on the All-Pac-12 Team for the first time in her USC career, and Horn earned All-Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention. USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC head coach CYNTHIA COOPER-DYKE Basketball Hall of Famer Cynthia Cooper, who as a player helped lead USC to a pair of NCAA championships before winning an Olympic gold medal and four NBA titles and then as a head coach resurrected three collegiate programs, was named head coach of the USC women s basketball program, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced on April 11, 2013. Cooper now enters her third season as head coach at USC, holding a 37-28 record with the omen of Troy after two seasons of work. The impact she made in her return to Troy was immediate. In her first season, the Trojans got out to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1998. Soon after, USC posted its first win over a ranked opponent since 2011. And the historic efforts just kept coming for Cooper and her omen of Troy. The No. 5 seed in the 2014 Pac-12 Tournament, USC turned heads by not just becoming the first team to play four straight games in the tourney, the Trojans finished it out with four straight victories. Along the way, USC upset perennial champion Stanford in the semifinals before claiming its first-ever Pac-12 Tournament Championship with a win over Oregon State in the final. That effort secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. USC would ship off to Tennessee as a No. 9 seed, falling in the last seconds of the First Round to finish out a 22-13 overall record on the year. It was a powerful turnaround for the Trojan program, which went 11-20 overall and 7-11 in Pac-12 play the previous season. Cooper, 51, has 10-year collegiate head coaching record of 187-134 (.583), with eight post-season appearances and three league Coach of the Year honors. The run to the 2014 NCAA Tournament with the Trojans was Cooper s fourth visit as a head coach. Cooper was the head coach at Texas Southern in 2013 and guided the Lady Tigers--who were 5-26 the previous year--to their first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 16-2 league mark (14 more league wins than in 2012). TSU advanced to the SAC Tournament s semifinals (as the tourney s No. 1 seed, a first in program history) and earned its first-ever NIT berth. At 20-12 overall, the Lady Tigers set school records for season victories (20) and consecutive wins (15). She spent the previous two seasons (2011-12) as the head coach at UNC ilmington. Inheriting a Seahawks team that was 12-19 the prior season (and just 6-12 in league play), her debut 2011 squad notched a school record for victories with a 24-9 overall mark (14-4 for second place in the Colonial Athletic Association), won 11 consecutive home games, got to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NIT in the school s first-ever post-season appearance. She was the 2011 CAA Coach of the Year. Then in 2012, UNC posted its second consecutive 20- win season (20-13) for the first time in school history, made it to the CAA tourney semis again after going 11-7 in the league and was a NIT participant. Cooper began her college coaching career at Prairie View A&M, a program that had never had a winning season. She posted an 86-72 record with four postseason appearances during her five-year (2006-10) tenure there. After going 7-21 overall (6-12 in the SAC) in 2006, she guided her second team in 2007 to the program s first winning campaign (19-14), its first SAC regular season title (at 14-4), its first SAC Tournament crown and its first NCAA Tournament berth, as she was named SAC Coach of the Year. The Lady Panthers repeated as SAC regular season champs in 2008 with a 15-3 league mark and finished at 22-12 with a trip to the NIT. The Lady Panthers were 15-14 in 2010 (12-6 in for second in league play) and were a NIT participant. Cooper was able to have success at Prairie View, a historically black college that faces financial and recruiting hurdles, despite having to endure NCAA sanctions her last two years that included scholarship reductions and probation. One of the world s greatest and most decorated women s basketball players, Cooper was the 1981 L.A. City Player of the Year at Locke High in Los Angeles while averaging 31 points a game and leading her team to the California State 4A championship. She also was on Locke s track team. She then starred as a 5-10 guard for USC s 1983 and 1984 NCAA Championship teams. A four-time letterwinner (1982-84, 86), as a senior in 1986 she was named an All-Conference first teamer and made the NCAA All-Tournament team as the omen of Troy made it to the NCAA Final. She averaged 12.9 points, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals during her career as USC won 114 of 129 games. She currently ranks ninth on USC s all-time scoring list (1,559 points), eighth in assists (381) and third in steals (256). Cooper began her pro career in Europe for Spain s Samoa Betera (1986-87) and Italy s Parma (1987-94) and Alcamo (1994-96) teams. She led the league in scoring once (36.7 average) with Samoa Betera and eight times in Italy. She was the MVP of the European All-Star team in 1987 and was named to the All-Star team of the Italian leagues in 1996 and 1997. During that time, Cooper collected five medals while representing the United States in international play. She won a gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games, a gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, golds at the 1986 and 1990 FIBA orld Championships and a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She returned to the USA in 1997 at the age of 34 to play with the Houston Comets of the newly-formed NBA. She was the league s MVP in 1997 and 1998 and was a two-time NBA All- Star (1999-2000) before retiring in 2000. She led the league in scoring three consecutive years and became the first NBA player to hit the 500-, 1,000-, 2,000- and 2,500-point career scoring plateaus. She moved into the coaching ranks in 2001 as the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury and spent that season and the first half of the 2002 season there, going 19-23 overall, before returning to the Comets 2003 playing roster until an early injury curtailed her season and led to her retirement. She earned her third NBA All-Star honor in 2003 and, at 40, was the oldest player to play in a NBA game at that time. She finished as Houston s all-time leader in scoring (2,601 points), free throw percentage (.871) and assists (602). She averaged 21.2 points per game in her career. She was the omen s Sports Foundation s 1998 Sportswoman of the Year. In 2011, she was voted by fans as one of the Top 15 players in NBA history. Cooper was born on April 14, 1963, in Chicago, Ill., but grew up in Los Angeles as one of eight children. She speaks Italian fluently. She earned her bachelor s degree from Prairie View A&M.
