He also moved into second in career receiving yards (2,173) and fourth in total receptions (137) and is third with 21 touchdowns, one shy of Corey Washington for second place. His 75-yard touchdown catch from Greg Ruff was the 12th-longest pass play in school history. Newberry opponents are 10 for their last 57 on third downs dating back to the fourth quarter at Florida Tech, a conversion rate of 17.5 percent. Newberry s defense has held its five non-division I opponents this season to 106 yards below their total offense average entering their game with the Wolves. The last three opponents have all been held at least 126 yards below their average. The Wolves defense is allowing an average of 239 yards per game over the last five games and is ranked 14th in total defense. Jamarcus Henderson leads Division II and ranks second across all three NCAA divisions in tackle for loss yards (260). He is second in Division II and third overall with 54.5 career tackles for loss, while his 26.5 sacks are third among active Division II players. Shea Rodgers has the third-highest career field goal percentage in Division II (.826-19-for-23). Joe Blue s 11.0 tackles per game lead the South Atlantic Conference and rank 15th nationally. His 20 tackles at Western Carolina are the second-most of any Division II player in 2018. Austin Barnes has 467 rushing yards this season, second in the SAC and 27 yards shy of matching his team-leading total from 2017. He needs 39 yards to top 1,000 for his career. Greg Ruff has 1,440 passing yards in his career, is 286 rushing yards from 1,000, and at 16 passing touchdowns is four away from cracking Newberry s top 10 of all time. Newberry s two losses to Tusculum this decade have come by a total of three points. Tusculum is playing a Saturday home game for the first time in 2018 (season-opening loss to North Greenville was on a Thursday; Limestone game moved to Friday and UNC Pembroke game canceled due to Hurricane Florence). Be the Wolves seventh win in nine meetings with the Pioneers this decade. Keep Newberry inside the top half of the SAC standings and keep the Wolves conference title hopes alive. Mark Newberry s third straight win inside the state of Tennessee. Snap a four-game Newberry losing streak in the month of October. A TUSCULUM WIN WOULD Give Tusculum an 11-10 edge in the all-time series. Allow the Pioneers to keep pace with Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman in the SAC standings with a Pioneers-Eagles showdown looming in two weeks. Give Tusculum its first winning streak over Newberry since the 2008 and 2009 seasons. A 37-34 loss in double overtime at Catawba was the only time this decade the Wolves have faltered in a SAC opener. Newberry has defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (2010), Catawba (2011, 2013), Carson-Newman (2012, 2017, 2018), and Tusculum (2015, 2016) in conference openers during that span. The Wolves have advanced to the playoffs in each year this decade they have won their SAC opener and finished the season with a winning record. THE SOUTH S LONGEST-RUNNING BROADCAST WKDK-AM 1240 in Newberry is in its 73rd year of broadcasting Newberry football dating back to the station s inception in October 1946. Play-by-play announcer Jimmie Coggins, a 1974 graduate of Newberry and a 2013 Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, is in his 37th season of broadcasting Wolves football. He is the SAC s longest-tenured broadcaster with 15 more years of experience than second-place Brian Stayton of Tusculum. Analyst Al de la Chica is an Assistant Professor of Communications and is in his fifth season with the Wolves. RETIRED JERSEY Newberry s only retired jersey is No. 74, which has been set aside in honor of former offensive lineman Heath Benedict, the most decorated player in school history. Projected as a likely third-round NFL Draft prospect, Benedict s impressive career accomplishments include: 2006 and 2007 First Team All-American (D2Football.com) 2006 and 2007 First Team Little All-American (AP) 2007 First Team All-American (Football Gazette) 2006 and 2007 Second Team All-American (Daktronics) 2006 Honorable Mention All-American (Football Gazette) 2006 and 2007 South Atlantic Conference Jacobs Blocking Trophy 2005, 2006, and 2007 First Team All-South Atlantic Conference 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl participant (first Division II player since 2004) Benedict passed away on March 23, 2008 from an enlarged heart that had gone previously undetected. He was inducted into the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2008, the only inductee for whom the requirement to be five years removed from graduation has been waived. 6
