UP AHEAD: The Miami University women s basketball team hits the road when it travels to Western Michigan Saturday. Tip time is at 2 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3 and an audio broadcast will air on Miami College Sports Live. 2. SMITH BRINGS DEFENSIVE EFFORT: Sophomore guard Jazz Smith made a major impact defensively off the bench on Wednesday against Toledo. She finished with a career-high five steals, including three in a minute long stretch that helped Miami get back into the contest. She also had five points, four rebounds and a block in 24 minutes on the court. Smith ranks fourth on the RedHawks with 11 steals this season. She has picked up her play during MAC games, averaging 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per conference contest. 3. DEFENSE PICKING UP PACE: Miami is allowing only 61.2 points per game in its four MAC contests this season. That ranks second among all league teams. Since giving up 97 points against Michigan on Dec. 19, no team has been able to reach 70 points against the RedHawks. During that six game stretch, opponents are only scoring 60.3 points per game against Miami and are hitting only 36.2 percent of all their shots (24.8 percent of all 3-point shots). MIAMI UNIVERSITY, PLEASE When referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Also, in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. It is one word with a capital H.

The RedHawks fall to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets improve to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the MAC. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis had one of the best games of her young career on Wednesday, finishing with a game-high 18 points. She was 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Purvis also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 29 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Jazz Smith made a major impact defensively off the bench. She finished with a career-high five steals, including three in a minute long stretch that helped Miami get back into the contest. She also had five points, four rebounds and a block in 24 minutes on the court. The RedHawks started the game with a 5-0 run, including a three-point jumper from Purvis as the shot clock expired for the first points of the game. After Toledo evened the score at five, layups from sophomore guard Ana Richter and Purvis put Miami back in front. Redshirt sophomore forward Megan Galloway hit a jumper to make it 11-10 at the 2:50 mark, but the Hawks were scoreless for the rest of the quarter as the Rockets took a 14-11 lead. Miami continued to go scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter, but allowed only two Toledo buckets. A lay-up by red shirt sophomore Megan Galloway stopped the bleeding and made it 18-13 with 4:54 to go. Toledo increased its advantage to eight before Purvis drained a triple to drop the lead down to five at 21-16 with 3:41 left. With the Rockets still up five late, freshman guard Nanci Hunter provided the highlight of the half when she pulled off a nice fake under the basket for the open layup to head into halftime only down 25-22. Neither team shot particularly well in the first half with Miami hitting 26.7 percent (8-for-30) of its shots. It held Toledo to a 34.5 percent (10-for-29) shooting percentage. Purvis led the way with eight points for the Hawks. After a quick two-pointer for the Rockets to start the third quarter, Purvis would show that she wanted to pick up where she left off. The next two baskets for Miami would be treys by the freshman point guard, cutting Toledo s lead to two at the 6:31 mark. After a turnover by the Rockets, sophomore forward Molly McDonagh and sophomore guard Baleigh Reid hit back-to-back layup to give the RedHawks the lead back at 32-30. Toledo answered with a 10-2 run to put them back in front at 40-34 with 1:44 left in the quarter. The RedHawks closed the period with four made free throws, two by freshman guard Kendall McCoy and two from Reid, to cut the lead to two with a score of 40-38 going into the fourth. The fourth quarter would start slow for both teams, as the Rockets had the only basket of the frame until the RedHawks countered with a three pointer from Smith Miami Women s Basketball Quick Facts Location... A 7-2 run by Toledo over the next three and a half minutes brought the lead to six at 49-43 with 3:02 left in the contest. The teams traded layups until a three pointer by McCoy made it a three-point game at 51-48 with 52 seconds to go. Toledo answered with a layup with 29 seconds remaining, but Purvis answered back with a drive to the hoop that got called for a foul. She converted both of her free throws to make it 53-50 with 10 seconds to go. Miami went for the steal but was forced to commit the foul. The Rockets drained both of their free throws to secure the 55-50 win. Reid and Galloway finished with six points apiece for the Hawks. Miami s strong defense held Toledo to 36.2 percent (21-for-58) shooting, including a 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) performance from behind the arc. The Rockets held a 43-36 advantage on the boards for the game. ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN: The Broncos are 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. They have alternated wins and losses so far this year in conference play, and are coming off a 73-52 win over Kent State on Wednesday. After averaging less than five 3-pointers a game in non-conference play, WMU has been on fire from behind the arc in MAC games, averaging 8.0 triples per contest and hitting 43.5 percent of all their attempts. The Broncos are led by senior forward Miracle Woods. The All-MAC performer returned from an early season injury and is averaging 13.2 points per game. Another key player is senior forward Jessica Jessing. She is averaging 9.6 points and a teamleading 6.9 rebounds per game. SERIES WITH WESTERN MICHIGAN: Miami holds a 33-26 lead in the all-time series with Western Michigan. However the Broncos have won the last four meetings with the RedHawks. On Jan. 31, 2015, the lead changed back-and-forth 13 times, but WMU eventually used a 10-2 run in the final four minutes to close out a 61-53 victory. Courtney Larson led Miami with 16 points. UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Miami returns to Millett for two home games next week. On Wednesday, Jan. 20 Miami hosts Central Michigan at 7 p.m. for another Dollar Days contest. Admission is only $1 with select concession items only $2! The Red and White will then host Buffalo on Alumni Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. Both games will air live on ESPN3. IMPROVEMENT SHOWING: Last season, Miami made history by having freshmen play 53.5 percent of all available minutes. That was more than any of the other 348 Division I teams. While the team is still very young with 11 of its 14 players either sophomores or freshmen, the experience gained last season has proved valuable. With their victory on Jan. 6 over Northern Illinois, the RedHawks have already matched their win total from 2015. Miami is scoring almost nine points per game more this year and has improved its shooting percentage by over six percent (.415 compared to.354). MIAMI ALL-TIME IN THE MAC: With a much more experienced team this season, the RedHawks are looking to significantly improve on last year s 4-14 MAC record. Miami has been very successful historically in league play over the years, currently holding an all-time MAC record of 321-248. That is a winning percentage of 56.5 percent. The Red and White have won regular season championships in the 1981-82, 1982-83, 1989-90 and 2003-04 seasons. They won the MAC Tournament title in 2008. PLUS-MINUS RATING: As statistics gathering has gotten more advanced over the years, one of the new ways of analyzing a player s performance is their plus-minus

4 2 0 15-16 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L rating. The plus-minus rating measures how many points are scored while they are on the court, as well as how many are given up. It is not a perfect way of analyzing performance, as it does not take into account any opponent factors (i.e., were the starters or the bench in for the opposition; it might be easier for a player to score when the other team s best player is sitting on the bench). It does give a very general look as to how effective a team is in both scoring and defense when that particular player is on the floor, as well as which lineup combinations are best at scoring and which hold the opposition down. So far this season Miami has been most successful when Kristen Levering has been on the court. During the 324:30 that she has played, the RedHawks have scored 523 points, while they have given up 496. That gives her a plus-minus rating of +27. The lineup combination that has been the most effective for the longest period of time has been the lineup that features Levering, Ana Richter, Leah Purvis, Baleigh Reid and Molly McDonagh. That combination has been on the floor for a period of 131:01. During that time they have scored 213 points, while giving up 201. That gives that lineup combination a plus-minus rating of +12. REID PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hot off making the All-MAC Freshman team last season, sophomore guard Baleigh Reid continued to show that she ll be among Miami s leading scorers in 2015-16. She has scored in double figures in 12 of Miami s 15 games this year. That includes a career-high 29 points in the RedHawks double overtime win over Evansville on Nov. 16, 19 at Michigan on Dec. 19 and again at FAU on Dec. 30. She earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the FAU Holiday Tournament after averaging 18.0 points per game in two contests. In her last game against Ball State (Jan. 9) she led the Hawks with 16 points. Reid is now averaging a teamleading 16.4 points per game. In 45 career games over two seasons at Miami, Reid has scored 555 total points and has finished in double figures 27 times. She has been the Hawks leading scorer in 24 of those games. BROWN RETURNS FROM INJURY: Sophomore guard Kayla Brown missed the first nine games of the season with an injury. She returned for the FAU Holiday Tournament, Dec. 29-30 and has immediately made her presence felt. In six games this season, she has averaged 6.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Brown was a key factor as a freshman last year, appearing in all 30 games, while starting 26. She was Miami s second leading scorer at 9.1 points per contest. RICHTER CONTRIBUTING IN ALL PHASES: Sophomore forward/guard Ana Richter has contributed in all phases during Miami s first 15 games this season. She is averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. In the RedHawks win over Morehead State (Nov. 29), Richter scored a career-high 20 points and brought in seven rebounds in leading the team to a victory. In Miami s double-overtime win over Evansville (Nov. 16), Richter scored 19 points, and also had nine rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal in 38 minutes of action. Against EKU (Nov. 24) Richter recorded a career-high 10 rebounds. In the RedHawks game against Bowling Green (Jan. 2), she had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 29 minutes of action. 2015-16 Individual MAC Rankings (cont.) Blocked Shots... K. Against EKU on Nov. 24, she had her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. In Miami s win over Morehead State on Nov. 29 she once again scored 10 points. She followed that up with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the win over Oakland (Dec. 5). 2 0 15-16 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L 5 PURVIS HAVING STRONG FRESHMAN SEASON: Freshman point guard Leah Purvis has had a significant impact in several games for Miami during her rookie campaign. In the RedHawks contest against EKU (Nov. 24), she led the team with 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Purvis scored 15 points in her career debut against Northern Kentucky (Nov. 13), hitting 4-for-8 from behind the arc. She followed that up with 17 more points in the double overtime win over Evansville (Nov. 16), 19 points in the victory over Austin Peay (Nov. 19) and nine points and five assists in the RedHawks win over Oakland (Dec. 5). Against Toledo (Jan. 13), she was Miami s leading scorer with 18 points, including finishing 4-for-9 from three-point range. Purvis is now second on the RedHawks, averaging 9.3 points per game. PURVIS HITS THE OUTSIDE SHOTS: Freshman point guard Leah Purvis showed that she is always an offensive threat when she went off for 18 points against Toledo on Wednesday. That included finishing 4-for-9 from behind the arc. It was the second time this season she made four triples, the other coming in the season opener against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 13. Purvis leads Miami with 17 three-point makes on the season and is the RedHawks second leading scorer at 9.3 points per game. LEVERING WORKS WAY INTO LINEUP: Freshman forward Kristen Levering worked hard in the preseason and earned a spot in the starting rotation beginning with the second game this season. Often the one having to take on the opponent s biggest post player, she is fourth on the RedHawks averaging 6.8 points per game, and leads the team at 5.6 rebounds per game. She had her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in Miami s win over Oakland (Dec. 5). She also scored 12 points and brought in seven boards in the win over LIU Brooklyn (Dec. 29) Levering tied her career high and led the Hawks with 13 points against Bowling Green (Jan. 2). Already with a four-block game to her name earlier this season, she recorded five blocks in the win over NIU on Jan. 6. She was the first RedHawk with five blocks since Kirsten Olowinski had five against Kent State on Feb. 17, 2011. Levering leads Miami with 20 blocks on the season. BUILDING DEPTH FOR MAC SEASON: The RedHawks worked hard at building depth during non-conference play to prepare for the grind of the Mid-American Conference season. Miami had nine different players participate in all 11 games during nonconference matchups and each averaged over 11 minutes per contest. That did not include sophomore guard Kayla Brown, who missed the first nine games of the season due to injury and then averaged 25.0 minutes per game in the final two non-conference contests. Sophomore guard Baleigh Reid leads the way at 33.7 minutes per game. She is the only player averaging more then 30 minutes per contest. WORKING OVERTIME: During the non-conference season, Miami went to overtime three times. It defeated Evansville, 91-85, in double overtime on Nov. 16. It fell to EKU 77-72 on Nov. 24 and FAU 68-65 on Dec. 30. It s the first time they ve played three overtime games since the 2007-08 season when they fell to IPFW and Texas- San Antonio on the road and defeated Ohio at home. The 2002-03 team holds the Miami record for most overtime games in a single season with six. All-time, the Red and White have played 54 total overtime games and hold a 27-27 record in those contests. THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK: Miami had a three game winning streak from Nov. 29-Dec. 5. During the winning streak, the RedHawks hit 44.4 percent of their shots, while their strong defense held opponents to 36.6 percent shooting. One of the biggest reasons for the success was an increase in sharing the ball and a decrease in turnovers. In those three games, Miami had a 0.84 assist-to-turnover ratio. LOOKING BACK AT EVANSVILLE WIN: Miami s 91-85 double-overtime win over Evansville on Nov. 16 will not be forgotten anytime soon. It tied for the longest game in the Red and White s history. It was the first time Miami went to double overtime since an 86-81 loss to Butler on Dec. 13, 2008. The 91 points scored were the most for the RedHawks since they also scored 91 in a 91-80 victory over Cleveland State on Dec. 29, 2013. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis played 46 minutes in the victory. It was the longest a Miami basketball player was on the court since Jenna Schone went 47 minutes in that overtime game against Butler. NEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTE AGAINST NKU: Several of Miami s newcomers had strong debuts against NKU last Friday. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis finished in double-figures with 15 points and was a threat behind the arc, hitting 4-for-8 with her 3-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Megan Galloway came off the bench and contributed six points, while freshman guard Kendall McCoy had a team-high three blocks to go with her five points and two assists. WE WERE HOME FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF NOVEMBER: The RedHawks began the season with five straight games at home that spanned the entire month of November. Miami did not hit the road until game six until it traveled to Valparaiso on Dec. 2. The RedHawks went 3-2 on the season-opening stretch. It was the longest homestand the Hawks have had since they also hosted five in a row from Dec. 10-28, 2011. It is easily the longest season-opening homestand in team history. The 1994-95 team previously held the mark, hosting its first three games in Millett. WHAT RETURNS: The RedHawks return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year s team, which featured more minutes played by freshmen (53.45 percent of all minutes played), than any other Division I team in the nation (349 teams total).the bulk of Miami s statistical outputs from last year return as well. The Hawks have 85.1 percent of their scoring, 89.2 of their rebounding, 72.2 percent of their assists, 92.4 percent of their blocks and 84.3 percent of their steal output back from the previous season. RETURNERS WILL HELP: After having so many new faces last season, Miami will benefit from having seven student-athletes who saw action last season take the floor in 2015-16. It will be led by two seniors, forwards Jessica Rupright and Tamira Ford. Five sophomores also return after seeing extensive playing time as freshmen last season. Baleigh Reid earned a spot on the MAC All- Freshmen Team after averaging 10.7 points per game. She s joined by returning sophomore guards Kayla Brown and Jazz Smith, along with sophomore forwards Molly McDonagh and Ana Richter. MCCUE TO MISS SEASON: Senior forward Hannah McCue suffered an injury in the offseason that required surgery and will cause her to miss the 2015-16 season. The RedHawks will miss her performance on the court, she was the third on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game and led the team with 7.9 rebounds per game last year. She will be on the bench this season assisting the coaches to lead a still young team in which 11 of the 13 other student-athletes are freshmen or sophomores. SIX NEWCOMERS ADD DEPTH: Six newcomers will give Miami a deep roster to work with during the 2015-16 season. They are led by redshirt sophomore Megan Galloway, who becomes eligible after sitting out last season after transferring from Detroit. As a freshman for the Titans during the 2013-14 season, she recorded five double-doubles and was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. Galloway is joined by five freshmen, including fellow forward Kristen Levering, who led Miami with 13 points in its exhibition win over West Virginia State. Morgan Horvath, Kendall McCoy, Leah Purvis and Nanci Hunter will contribute to a deep guard position when they make their rookie debuts. MIAMI PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN EAST: In the annual preseason poll, the Miami University RedHawks were picked to finish fourth in the East Division after a vote by the league s 12 coaches. The defending MAC regular season and tournament champion Ohio Bobcats were picked to win the East Division by all 12 coaches. Akron finished second in the poll. Bowling Green followed in third, while Miami placed fourth. There was a tie for fifth place between Buffalo and Kent State. Eastern Michigan was pick to win the West Division, despite receiving only four first place votes. The coaches had diverging opinions on Ball State, as it received the other eight first place votes, but finished second in the poll by total points. They were followed in the poll by Western Michigan, Toledo, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

2 0 15-16 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L 9 Cleve Wright returns for his third season in charge of the Miami women s basketball program. Wright came to the RedHawks after a very successful 11-year run at Gannon that featured five NCAA Tournament appearances and two runs to the Elite Eight. Wright holds a career coaching record of 255-153. His Miami team last year went 7-23, but had the unique distinction of being the youngest team in NCAA Division I with freshmen responsible for 53.45 percent of all minutes played on the team. With all the experience they gained, combined with a powerful recruiting class joining them, Wright has the RedHawks ready to take the next step this season. Wright won 70 percent of his games at Gannon (233-100), turning the Lady Knights into a Division II powerhouse. In his final season there in 2013, he led Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the country. Wright brought the Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament in five of the his last seven seasons, with his best year coming in 2009-10 when he was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after guiding them to a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance. He coached seven All-Americans and 37 all-conference selections. Gannon s women s basketball program was extremely successful in the classroom as well under Wright. The Lady Knights were ranked among the top 25 teams in GPA in eight of his final nine years. In addition, 70 players earned allconference academic honors.
