Thiem leads the head-to-head record over Zverev by 4-1, including a perfect 3-0 record on clay. 2nd-seeded Zverev has raced through the draw in Madrid: the 21-year-old German has not been broken in the event, and has had to fend off only one break point in his four matches. The #NextGenATP leader won two ATP Masters 1000 titles at age 20 last year, in Rome (def. Novak Djokovic in the final) and Montreal (def. Roger Federer in the final), and has a second chance this year to get a third career ATP Masters 1000 title, after falling to John Isner in the Miami final earlier in 2018. If he wins in Madrid, Zverev will become the fifth active player with at least three ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining Rafael Nadal (31), Djokovic (30), Federer (27) and Andy Murray (14). Thiem, on the other hand, will be searching for his first ATP Masters 1000 title. The 24-year-old Austrian has reached the final in Madrid for the second year in a row, avenging his loss to Nadal in last year s title match with aplomb by shocking the defending champion in the quarter-finals, 7-5, 6-3, and ending Nadal s 21-match and 50-set winning streaks on clay courts. If 5th-seeded Thiem can maintain his perfect record against Zverev on clay, he will become the first Austrian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title since former World No. 1 Thomas Muster emerged victorious at Miami in 1997. Also on Sunday, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan will attempt to win their 39th ATP Masters 1000 title as they battle Nikola Mektic of Croatia and Austria s Alexander Peya for the trophy. Moreover, if the Bryans win the doubles title in Madrid, they will become the oldest World No. 1s in ATP Doubles Rankings history on Monday, at 40 years and 15 days old, breaking Daniel Nestor s current record by 10 days. They face a stern challenge from Mektic and Peya, who teamed up for the first time at the start of this year, and have won one title and reached three other finals in 2018. Day 8 Sunday, 13 May 2018 Page 3 of 3 Nikola Mektic (CRO)/Alexander Peya (AUT) vs [2] Bob Bryan (USA)/Mike Bryan (USA) First Meeting Mektic and Peya teamed up at the start of 2018, and have since won 1 title (Marrakech) and made 3 other finals this year (Rio de Janeiro, Sofia, and Munich). They have a win-loss record of 18-11 as a team. Also this year, they made SF at Acapulco and QF at ATP Masters 1000 Miami. Fell in Australian Open 2R to eventual finalists Cabal/Farah. 29-year-old Mektic is ranked No. 30 in doubles (career-high No. 26 earlier this year) and has won 3 career doubles titles. This is his 1st ATP Masters 1000 final. 37-year-old Peya is ranked No. 35 in doubles (career-high No. 3 in 2013) and has won 16 career doubles titles. Peya has won 2 ATP Masters 1000 titles in his career: 2013 and 2014 Canada (both with Bruno Soares). This is his 6th ATP Masters 1000 final (including 2013 Madrid w/ Soares). Bryan and Bryan own a record 1,067 wins and 116 titles as a team, including a record 38 ATP Masters 1000 titles. This is the 58th ATP Masters 1000 final of the 40-year-old twins career. Suddenly, Shapovalov is the youngest quarter-finalist and semi-finalist in tournament history. If the 19-year-old beats Alexander Zverev on Saturday, he will be the youngest ATP Masters 1000 finalist since Richard Gasquet, 18, at 2005 Hamburg. A title would make Shapovalov the youngest ATP Masters 1000 champion since Rafael Nadal, 18, at 2005 Rome. Shapovalov already owns records as the youngest quarter-finalist and semi-finalist in ATP Masters 1000 history (since 1990). He reached the 2017 Montreal semi-finals as an 18-year-old wild card, defeating Nadal before falling to his fellow #NextGenATP player Zverev. If Shapovalov avenges his loss to Zverev, he will pass Milos Raonic in the ATP Rankings on Monday and become the No. 1 Canadian. Shapovalov defeated Raonic 6-4, 6-4 in the Madrid third round this past Thursday. Zverev will be a tough task, however. He is the only player to reach five ATP Masters 1000 semifinals in the last year, highlighted by titles at Rome and Montreal in 2017. If he adds the Madrid championship on Sunday, Zverev will become the fifth active player with at least three ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining Nadal (31), Novak Djokovic (30), Roger Federer (27) and Andy Murray (14). In the other semi-final, World No. 8 Kevin Anderson brings a 6-0 head-to-head advantage into his match with World No. 7 Dominic Thiem. All six of Anderson and Thiem s prior meetings took place on hard courts and before the quarter-finals. Anderson is in unfamiliar territory, appearing in his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final after snapping a 10-match losing streak in quarter-finals at this level. Thiem avenged his loss to Nadal in the 2017 Madrid final by stunning the World No. 1 on Friday. That last number could put Nadal in the record books Thursday when the five-time champion faces No. 13 seed Diego Schwartzman. If Nadal defeats Schwartzman in straight sets, he will pass John McEnroe for the longest set streak on any surface in the Open Era. McEnroe swept 49 straight sets on carpet in 1984, including 10 to win the Madrid Indoor Open title. Only one Spaniard, Nadal, is in the third round -- fewest in the 17-year history of the Mutua Madrid Open. Seven of the Top 8 seeds remain, including No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem, who will meet 21- year-old Borna Coric in Estadio 3. Thiem is the last man to win a set and a match against Nadal on clay. The Austrian avenged his loss in last year s Madrid final by beating Nadal 6-4, 6-3 in the Rome quarter-finals on 19 May 2017. Thiem and Nadal could clash again in Friday s quarter-finals. Top 2 Canadians Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov will meet for the first time. Shapovalov has reached a new career-high ranking seven times this season, but he s still looking up at Raonic, who returned to the Top 20 last week. Shapovalov is seeking the second ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career. As an 18-year-old, Shapovalov upset Nadal last August in Montreal and became the youngest ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist and semi-finalist since the series started in 1990.
