Please look inside this newsletter for more information about each event. The newsletter also includes information about the results of CVAC competition and an update on Junior sports. CVAC District Grass Golf championship September 17, Valleyview Golf Course, Delisle Sand Golf This was the last year for sand golf within the SHSAA so Waldheim decided to enter several golfers. At the local qualifying tournament, Joel Schultz captured the championship with a solid 86. He was followed by Hunter Bollinger and Ryan Enns. At sand provincials, CVAC s representatives were in tough, but Joel finished ninth and Hunter eighteenth, a nice send-off to the end of an era. Grass Golf On September 17, 31 senior golfers registered to take part in the CVAC grass golf championship, under less than ideal conditions. In the girls competition, it was a battle between the two golfers from Stobart. After 18 holes, they were tied with scores of 98. The championship was awarded to the golfer shooting a lower score on the second round, so, Kirsten Cameron captured the individual title over Maycie Gardypie, last year s champion. These individual scores also carried Stobart High to the girls team title. In the boys competition, experience showed its importance. Jax Gipman from Martensville High shot 78, defeating Ashton Cameron from Stobart by one stroke. Colton Lehne from Warman and Roderick Smallchild from CRCEC tied for third, shooting 82. Although their individual players did not place in the top three, Delisle High captured the team title, defeating Stobart 244 to 247 in another close battle. Jax Gipman, MHS Category Winner Boys Jax Gipman, Martensville Girls Kirsten Cameron, Stobart Delisle Composite High School boys golf team Boys Team Delisle Composite School Girls Team Stobart Community School Provincial Golf championship September 25 + 26, Deer Park Golf Course, Yorkton CVAC golfers stepped up to face tough competition at the SHSAA provincials held at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton. The CVAC girls did very well. Kirsten Cameron finished seventh and Maycie Gardypie finished twelfth in individual play, leading their team to a tie for second place in the team competition, our best finish ever! In the boys competition, although our top two finishers at the CVAC championship were unable to compete at provincials, the team from Warman High represented CVAC well. They finished eighth in the team competition, a solid finish for a young team. CVAC would like to congratulate all those who competed and coached this fall. As more coaches use the late spring as their training season, greater involvement and better finishes should result. We look forward to seeing how we do in 2016 at the Humboldt Golf and Country Club. CVAC Cross Country October 7, Delisle The CVAC cross country meet took place on Wednesday, October 7 in Delisle. The weather was perfect for cross country, as evidenced by the large turnout of runners and the excellent times from our top competitors. A special thank you to Delisle Composite for hosting this event for the last three years. At the midget girls level, Mirjam Kielstra from Asquith was the top CVAC finisher after 3 km at 60th out of 104 runners. At the midget boys level, Brayden Arnason from Osler placed ninth in a race featuring 105 competitors over 4 km. In the junior boys 5 km race, Zach Ananas was the top CVAC runner, finishing 54th out of 84 competitors. In the senior girls competition, Natalia Bidulka from Aberdeen led CVAC, placing 14th out of 107 runners after 4000 m. This year, CVAC had three competitors capture medals at provincials. In the junior girls 4 km race, Jasmine Fehr from VCA finished second, only 5 seconds behind the winner, capturing the silver medal for 2015. At the senior boys level, the twin Bill brothers from Stobart created SHSAA history as they finished one-two in the race. Provincial Soccer October 30 + 31 1A Girls Soccer The 2015 senior soccer playoffs began under sunny skies on the October 23 and 24 weekend. This year, CVAC had eight girls teams registered for 7v7 or 1A playoffs, a record level of involvement. At the regional playoff held at VCA, Aberdeen lost 3-1 to Maymont and RJC scored a bye victory over CRCEC Friday afternoon. On Saturday, top-seeded VCA defeated Maymont 7-0 while Stobart came back to defeat RJC 2-1. With both teams guaranteed a position at provincials the next weekend, an anticlimactic final had VCA defeat Stobart 9-0, making them the regional champions. At Davidson, three other CVAC teams vied for two more spots available at provincials. Martensville defeated Warman 3-0 to capture one of the openings, while Waldheim, although guaranteed a position as the provincial host, earned their way to the championship, defeating Herbert 7-0 and Martensville 5-2, and captured their regional championship. With four of the eight teams at the 1A girls provincials in Waldheim on October 30 and 31 from within CVAC, hopes were high for a multiple medal count. The competition started well with Waldheim defeating Cando 9-0. Other than that first round victory, CVAC teams struggled. VCA fell 6-3 to Humboldt; Martensville gave up a late goal to lose a heart-breaker 2-1 to Lake Lenore; and Stobart was defeated 8-0 by Lloydminster Holy Rosary. In their semi-final game, Waldheim outplayed Humboldt throughout the match, but could not beat their keeper, losing 1-0 and putting themselves into the bronze medal game. On the consolation side, VCA dominated Cando 9-2 and Martensville defeated Stobart 4-0, pitting them against each other in the final. In that game, VCA and Martensville played a tough, tight match with VCA pulling out a 1-0 victory. Waldheim School Girls Soccer team, with coach Trace Block (far left) In the bronze medal match, Waldheim rode two early goals to a 3-1 victory over Lloydminster, capturing their first ever provincial soccer medal. 1A Boys Soccer At the 1A 7v7 boys competition, CVAC registered six teams this fall, another record involvement. Although CRCEC had to withdraw from playoffs, the remaining CVAC schools played quite well. At Muenster, Allan was defeated by the host 6-0, a solid effort from a coed team. At North Battleford, Langham lost out to Chief Little Pine 8-5, eliminating them from advancing. Finally, at Ahtahkakoop, two CVAC teams advanced to provincials, as VCA defeated the hosts 3-2 while Stobart swept RJC 8-3. The regional final, played mainly for seeding purposes, was captured by VCA as they defeated their district rival 3-2, winning the regional championship. The two CVAC teams advancing to the 1A boys provincial championships in Lake Lenore went in with hopes to play in a medal game. VCA opened against the host squad from Lake Lenore. Unfortunately, they were unable to score, losing 2-0 to a solid opponent. Meanwhile, Stobart faced Middle Lake, last year s 2A gold medalists, in their first game. A tight battle ended with Middle Lake victorious, defeating Stobart 1-0. In their consolation side semi-finals, VCA defeated Meadow Lake 4-3 while Stobart fell 3-2 to Makwa Sahgaiencan. On Saturday, the two victors met in the consolation final with Makwa Sahgaiencan winning as they defeated VCA 5-0. In the boys 2A playoffs, a 11v11 format, Martensville High had their strongest showing in recent memory. After defeating Warman 8-3 in their regional semi-final, they lost a tight game to North Battleford Composite 5-4 in the regional final, but still advanced to the 2A provincials in Regina on Halloween weekend. At provincials, Martensville was up against Yorkton Sacred Heart, last year s silver medalists, in their first game. Unfortunately, they were unable to match Yorkton s extremely high skill level, losing 8-1. In their consolation semi-final, a close contest with Regina Christian resulted in a 4-3 loss, eliminating them from further play. Although the medal count may not reflect it, CVAC senior soccer had tremendous growth this year as the number of teams participating rose significantly. With the further development of skills and strategy in our players and coaches, the sky is the limit for these hard working teams. We thank these athletes and coaches for how they represented CVAC locally and provincially and look forward to hearing of their future success. Page 4

Provincial Football November, 2015 CVAC s 2015 football playoffs started off on a relatively warm late October afternoon. In the 1A 6-Man competition, Hague started the playoffs with a bye victory. On Halloween weekend, they hosted Southey, losing, unfortunately, 47-35. On the same date, Hanley travelled to Gull Lake for their quarter-final game, losing their game 69-43, leaving CVAC with no teams at this level. In the 2A 6-Man playoffs, Rosthern started well, defeating La Ronge 59-13. On a wet Halloween afternoon, they hosted Kamsack, defeating the visitors 62-24 in their quarter final game. Hafford, running a combined program with Blaine Lake, beat Assiniboia 40-36 to advance to the other semifinal. The following weekend, Rosthern hosted Watrous in a tough semi-final match. When the dust had settled, Rosthern had emerged victorious, defeating Watrous 30-24. Meanwhile, Hafford travelled to Birch Hills, losing 44-22 in their semi-final. The provincial final took place in Rosthern on November 14 with two football programs very familiar with each other. The combined Rosthern/RJC squad started strong, building up a 30-22 half time lead. Both defences continued... Provincial football continued. tightened up in the second half, allowing no third quarter points, but two fourth quarter touchdowns and a stingy defence led the Rosthern Longhorns to a 46-28 win over the Birch Hills Marauders, giving Rosthern a long-awaited provincial title. Clavet and Delisle represented CVAC in 2A 9-Man playoffs this year. On Halloween afternoon, Clavet hosted Lumsden in their quarter final game, defeating the visitors 48-25. Similarly, in their quarter-final game, Delisle hosted Foam Lake, defeating their visitors 76-32. The result was that the following Saturday, CVAC s two teams met in a semi-final in Clavet. In a bit of an upset, Delisle defeated Clavet 36-33, dashing Clavet s hope to defend the title won last year. The Rebels then went on the road for the provincial final, travelling to face top-ranked Shaunavon. The Shadows, playing on their home field, were just too much for Delisle, winning 42-28 and sending the Rebels home with the silver medal. Finally, in 3A 9-Man quarter-final playoffs on October 31, Warman hosted Broadview, while Martensville travelled to Humboldt. In Warman, the top-seeded Wolverines manhandled their opponents 69-7. Unfortunately, Martensville fell 15-3 to Humboldt in a defensive struggle, setting Humboldt up for a semi-final against the power of Warman s offensive. Played in Humboldt the following weekend, Warman rolled to a 42-22 victory on a beautiful fall day. Warman s opponent in the provincial final would be Melfort, for the third consecutive year! The Wolverines were eager to take their show on the road, hoping to revenge their losses in the two previous finals. And they did, as Warman rolled to a 65-23 victory, capturing their first SHSAA football title. Within CVAC, we always enjoy seeing our football teams reach the playoff round. Once there, they are known for playing to the best of their ability in a tough, competitive environment. To have them capture the championships they are pursuing is a bonus in the overall development of these young men. Congratulations to all our coaches and athletes taking part in chasing the dream! Provincial volleyball November, 2015 Senior volleyball playoffs began on November 7 with CVAC teams attempting to challenge their unprecedented seven medal win total from 2014. Girls volleyball In 1A conference play, things did not go well in Allan as neither Colonsay (the defending provincial champion), Allan, or Vonda was able to advance to regionals. In Dinsmore, Perdue went 4-0, winning their conference and advancing to the north regional. Borden also advanced to the north regional as they went 3-1 in their conference playoff; unfortunately, Blaine Lake did not. At the 2A conference level, the all-cvac conference in Asquith had an amazingly tight finish. Following the completion of the round robin which pushed Rosthern and Leask to the sidelines, Asquith, Hepburn, and Langham had identical 4-1 records. It came down to a one point difference in total points for and against, resulting in Asquith, the conference champion, and Langham advancing to the west regional. Meanwhile, Hanley overcame their low seeding, finishing second in their conference and advancing to the south regional. In 3A competition, another all-cvac conference held at CRCEC finished with Waldheim, the conference champion, and RJC advancing to the west regional with CRCEC and Stobart eliminated. They would be joined by Hague who finished second in the conference playoff they hosted, defeating Aberdeen 2 sets to 1 in their qualifying match. The following weekend was a busy one with playoffs in girls regionals and boys conferences. In 1A Girls play, neither Borden nor Perdue was able to move on to the provincial championship. In 2A Girls competition, Hanley, competing in the south regional, was also denied the opportunity to compete at provincials. Meanwhile, at the west regional, Langham and Asquith both advanced to provincials, finishing second and third, respectively. At the 3A regional in Waldheim, it was a very tough competition that contained four of the top ranked 3A teams in the province. Following tough matches, Waldheim, as regional champion, and RJC, as provincial host, advanced to the championships. The 4A Girls regional for Dalmeny, Delisle, Clavet, and VCA truly was a road trip as they headed north to La Loche for an eight-team playoff from which only two teams would advance to provincials. Playing in two pools of four, Clavet won their pool 3-0 while Dalmeny advanced from the other pool with a 2-1 record. This matched the two CVAC schools against each other in a semi-final with Clavet emerging victorious, eliminating Dalmeny from further competition. The Cougars rode the momentum from this victory to the re- gional championship, winning 2-0 and advancing to provincials. Meanwhile, Warman hosted the 5A north regional for the first time. Unfortunately, they were unable to overcome an untimely injury and were eliminated from advancing. Martensville, although guaranteed a position as host, played hard, advancing to the semi-finals before falling to the eventual regional champion, P.A. Carlton. At the 2A girls provincials in Porcupine Plain/Kelvington, Langham and Asquith both made it into the playoff round, but neither was able to advance to the semi-finals. 3A Girls provincials were hosted within CVAC at Rosthern with RJC as the host, using the RJC and RHS gyms for play. Waldheim and RJC both advanced to the playoff round with Waldheim going 4-0, winning their pool. These playoff matches were amazingly tight. RJC was eliminated by Wynyard, the eventual silver medalist, 25-22, 25-23 in the first round of the playoffs. Waldheim advanced to the semi-finals, but was defeated 25-23, 25-21 by Wakaw, the eventual champion. The Raiders did bounce back to capture the bronze medal, defeating Oxbow 12-25, 25-16, 25-15. They were upset by Rosetown in the first round, losing 25-23, 19-25, 30-28 in a marathon match. The 4A title was eventually won by Caronport, coached by Derek Zacharias, a former CVAC coach and PSSD administrator. continued... Page 7

Provincial volleyball continued. Finally, for the first time, CVAC was the host for 5A Girls volleyball provincials. Held in Martensville, the event hosted the top 10 5A teams from across the province. While unable to win any of their matches, Martensville gained a great deal of experience for future reference at this level of competition. Boys volleyball In boys playoffs, CVAC had no teams competing in a 1A conference playoff. At the 2A level, Hepburn and Waldheim advanced to regionals, finishing second and third, respectively; Blaine Lake did not advance. In 3A competition, VCA advanced to regionals as the conference champion while Langham joined them as the third place finisher; Hague and Perdue did not advance. In boys volleyball playoffs, Colonsay and Borden advanced to the 1A provincial championship, finishing second and third, respectively, at their regional playoff in Cut Knife. At their 2A regional in Cudworth, Hepburn and Waldheim both finished second in their pool. After losing their semi-finals, the two schools were pitted against each other for the final position at the 2A provincial championship. Hepburn came out swinging, winning 2-0 and moving on. In 3A regional play in Wilkie, Langham and VCA finished first and second, respectively, in their pool following round robin play. VCA was eliminated in their semi-final, losing 25-22, 14-25, 25-21 to Island Lake, the regional champion. Langham advanced to provincials, winning their semi-final 25-22, 25-19 before losing the regional final 25-17, 25-23. At another 3A regional playoff in Wakaw, RJC went 3-0 to win their pool while CRCEC did not advance to the playoff round. In the playoffs, RJC defeated Senator Myles Venne 2-0 in their semi-final, guaranteeing their position at the provincial championship before losing the regional final 2-0 to Bellevue. At the 4A level, Dalmeny did not advance to the playoff round at their regional playoff. Boys provincials took place the last weekend of November. At the 1A competition held in Annaheim/Lake Lenore, Colonsay and Borden both advanced to the playoff round. Although Borden was eliminated in a tough quarter final match, Colonsay defeated Gladmar 25-23, 25-18 in the first playoff round, advancing to face Annaheim in the semifinals. Playing in front of a raucous setting, Colonsay took the host school Annaheim to three sets, losing 25-18, 19-25, 25-15, putting them in the bronze medal match against Pierceland. Unfortunately, they were not able to match the challenge, losing 25-19, 26-24 and finishing fourth. At the 2A championships in College Mathieu/Gravelbourg, Hepburn was in tough as they looked to repeat their championship title from last year. After finishing third in their pool, they upset Fox Valley 29-27, 25-19 in an exciting match, advancing to the semi-final against their nemesis Medstead. Rising to the occasion, Hepburn swept Medstead 25-23, 25-21, creating a rematch of last year s 2A final against top-ranked Edam. This year turned out to be Edam s year as they defeated the Hawks 25-14, 25-22 to claim the 2A championship. Langham did advance, but lost 25-20, 25-15 to Island Lake in the quarter finals, eliminating them from further play. While not as successful results-wise as last year, this was a great season overall for CVAC volleyball. Our senior teams continue to be very competitive at every level, fed by quality junior programs with rising numbers. We again hosted provincial championships with excellent feedback from players, coaches, officials and fans. CVAC wants to thank everyone involved at every level and looks forward to hearing about your successes next year. Page 8

CVAC Junior results Junior Golf September 16, Valleyview Golf Club, Delisle Junior Golf continues to grow within CVAC The 2015/16 CVAC season started off on September 16 with the Junior Golf Championship held at the Valleyview Country Club in Delisle. On a cloudy day, 51 golfers showed up to play. Carlie Meikle from Venture Heights scored 63 over 9 holes to capture the Junior Girls title. In the noncompetitive boys category, Ethan Leitch from VCA shot a solid 53 to win this grouping. In the ever-competitive boys category, Jarzy Orchard from Delisle High fired a solid 41/45, scoring 86 and winning by five strokes over Colby Stoesz from VCA and Ryder Gereneaux from Stobart. Congratulations to all competitors. CVAC is pleased to see the number of junior golfers approaching the 54 maximum. We hope to reach that number next year as interest continues to grow. Junior Volleyball October 31, Dalmeny + Langham CVAC junior volleyball playoffs took place over the final weekend in October, finishing on Halloween night. Eighteen boys and 25 girls teams entered the playoffs, our largest number of entries to date. The boys and girls teams initially played off at eight sites to determine the eight conference finalists. In boys matches, Osler defeated Martensville High School to win Conference 1 while VCA slipped by Blaine Lake to capture Conference 2. Conference 3 had Delisle defeat Perdue to advance to the district finals for the first time in recent memory, while in Conference 4, Waldheim defeated Colonsay in five exciting sets. The girls conference finals featured generally solid matches at every site. In Conference 1, Waldheim proved too strong for Hanley, advancing to Saturday s finals. In Conference 2, MHS swept Aberdeen with strong team play. Conference 3 had Dalmeny post a minor upset over Warman, while in Conference 4, Asquith won its battle with a stubborn VCA team. Meanwhile, at the girls finals in Langham, a similar round robin format advanced four strong competitors to the semifinals. In the first playoff match, Dalmeny upset Waldheim, winning 15-25, 25-9, and 25-22. In the second semi-final, Langham started strong against Martensville High School and held on for a 25-8, 25-20 victory, matching two very competitive programs against each other. Walter W. Brown s gym was rocking as Langham captured the first set 28-26 in a tightly contested game against Dalmeny. Dalmeny roared back to handily capture the second set 25-16. The third and final set was a tough one as both teams pushed to gain the upper hand. Using the home court crowd to their advantage, the Vikings broke through, opening up some breathing room on their way to a 25-20 victory. These eight boys and girls teams advanced to their district finals in Dalmeny and Langham, respectively, to play in the five team finals tournament hosted, ironically, by the top ranked teams in the district. The challenge was on! In the boys finals at Dalmeny, five teams battled through a round robin after which four of the teams moved into the playoff round. In the first semi-final, Dalmeny faced Waldheim. The host school came out hard, winning handily 25-6, 25-17. In the second semi-final featuring VCA and Delisle, the VCA Lions played consistent ball, winning 25-18, 25-20. In the championship match between Dalmeny and VCA, the experience of Dalmeny s team and coach showed through, leading them to a 25-21, 25-16 victory. W. W.
