A Word From The Publisher June is rushing by and Skeet shoots are in full swing everywhere. In parts of Zone VI, we are still having a lot more precipitation than we need. There are floods all over. Since many gun clubs are located near rivers, there are a number of clubs that have had flooding. I have seen video of flood waters at the Dallas Gun Club and at Blue Rock Sportsman Club in North Little Rock. Although Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club is located on property designated by the Army Corp of Engineers as subject to flooding once in 100 years, we have not had any problems. That is very interesting considering the Red River crested at 37.10 feet, exceeding flood stage by 7.10 feet and has not affected our home club. We are counting our blessings! Paul Williamson, Manager of Outdoor Recreation at Barksdale, AFB has literally kept his powder dry. We have several shoot reports for you in this issue. Debbie and I returned from the Louisiana Open at David and Mary Hebert s Farm last weekend. Yes it rained a bunch, but we had fun. We will share photos from that shoot with you in our next issue. With some luck, we will get that issue out before we go to the Louisiana State Skeet Championships in July. In our last issue, we asked you to take time Memorial Day weekend to remember those who gave their all so that we can enjoy the freedoms that make our country the envy of many. We also asked you to then thank a Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Airman for serving to keep those freedoms bought with blood and treasure. As many of our long time readers know, our son has had the honor of serving in the United States Marines for the last five years. Debbie and I are excited that Corporal Michael Frey is coming home to start a new life as a civilian. He and his bride Hanna will be here by Father s Day and I can t think of a better gift. My sweet daughter, her husband and both my grandsons will be joining us for lunch. We are so blessed! I hope your Father s Day is as good as mine. Until I see you on the Skeet field or in these pages, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

The Gertrude Hurlbutt Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale Air Force Base hosted the Gertrude Hurlbutt Open May 30, 2015. This shoot was Red Chute s 28 Gauge Marathon and a participating shoot in the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. There were 21 shooters taking the field this day. Of those, all but two shot 28 gauge. Two shot the 20 gauge. Once again Mother Nature sent some rain our way. Shooters in the second rotation did get wet. The rain moved on and the delay s were not a big factor. The 28 Gauge Champion title was claimed by Mike O Keefe of Baton Rouge who posted a 192. Doug Frey slipped in for Runner-Up with 188. The three way tie for 3rd between Ken Wright, Randi Corley and Jared Gay was settled by a shootoff. Ken won that one. Kacie Clanton and Todd Corley chose to shoot 20 gauge. Kacie did well posting a 190 taking Champion honors. Todd shot a respectable 186 and his first 25 straight. Yes we did shoot his hat! See page 6 of this issue. Lloyd Webb cooked up a mess of catfish and all the trimmings for lunch. Tommie Clanton provided several desserts. It was all delicious! Page 16

SUMMER BREEZE OPEN Hurlburt Clay Target Sports Club hosted the Summer Breeze Open, May 22-24. There were 12 shooters competing over a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. We kicked things off Friday afternoon with five shooters in the doubles event. Jay Edwards, down from Alabama was taking a break from the beach and took Doubles Champion with a 93. Kent Lillie lost his hat after running his first straight doubles round to take Runner-Up with 91, and Wyatt Hampton finished in Third Place with 86. Dan Dean, one of our sporting clays shooters, decided to give skeet a shot and finished C1, while Sam Merlo took D1. Nine shooters competed in the 12 Gauge Event Saturday morning. Joe Levine won 12 Gauge Champion with a 96. Kent Lillie and Jay Edwards both turned in 95s, with Kent ending up Runner-Up. Kent Lillie, Brian Moore, Joe Levine, and Tommy Deweese Tommy Deweese, visiting from Arkansas, took C1, with Wyatt Hampton and Sam Merlo finishing D1 and E1 respectively. Wyatt Hampton, Ralph Aaron, Kent Lillie, Joe Levine, and Jim Butterworth Page 21

SUMMER BREEZE OPEN Seven shooters shot the 20 Gauge Event Saturday afternoon with Joe Levine taking 20 Gauge Champion with another 96. Tommy Deweese was Runner-Up with 92 and Dan Dean finished in Third Place with 90. Wyatt Hampton took B1, Bob Black, another sporting clays shooter, took C1, and junior shooter Daniel Kolb took D1. Mark Kolb, Daniel Kolb, Bob Black, and Dan Dean Sunday turned up with just enough overcast to keep the temperature pleasant and the kind of wind that makes shooting the little guns hazardous to your classification--it was more like the Summer Windstorm Open. Four shooters went after it with the 28 gauge. Kent Lillie won 28 Gauge Champion with a very respectable 94. Joe Levine took Runner-Up with 89 and Ralph Aaron, visiting from Ft. Rucker, finished in Third Place with 88. Wyatt Hampton took C1 with 78. Page 22

SUMMER BREEZE OPEN Dan Dean, Wyatt Hampton, Sam Merlo, Jay Edwards, and Kent Lillie Since that wasn't painful enough, the same four shooters, plus one more, went back to work with the 410. Ralph Aaron led the way to.410 Champion with a hard-earned 93. Wyatt Hampton came back and took Runner-Up with 88 and Jim Butterworth took Third Place with 82. Joe Levine and Kent Lillie both turned in 81s to take B1 and C1 respectively. In HOA it was Joe Levine for Champion with 362. Kent Lillie took Runner-Up with 354 and Wyatt Hampton finished in Third Place with 349. Although the turnout was a little light and the wind was tough on Sunday, we still had a good time turning clay targets into small pieces--for the most part. Thanks to Dan Dean and Bob Black for giving registered skeet a try; we hope you'll come back for more! Thanks also to Brian Moore for refereeing all squads on Saturday and Sunday, and to our out-of-town guests for making the trip to shoot with us. Y 'all come back every chance you get. Hurlburt's next shoot is the Hurricane Open, September 18-20, just in time for a good warmup for the World Championship and we hope you'll make plans to join us! Wyatt Hampton Skeet Chairman Page 23

Funnies The mother of a 4 year old boy relayed this true story. Tonight we were talking about my birthday and that I am almost halfway to dying [she just turned 32 and is in good health] and Bobby got very upset. He had tears in his eyes and told me how much he would miss me. He said two days before I died, he wants to give me lots of hugs and kisses. Robert said, "Are you going to give me lots of hugs and kisses too?" Bobby said "yes Daddy and I will even let you give me a kiss too. Hopefully they will have dried out by then." Then he was still sad and he was talking about all the snuggling and loving we were going to do before we go to heaven and he finally said (with tears in his eyes) "Mommy before you go to heaven, I have one big important thing to ask you to do for me." I said "yes, Bobby?" He said "I need you to teach me how to use the TV remote." Oh Lord that child. Page 36

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
