Bats vs. Red Sox Overall: 3-2 Home: 3-1 Road: 0-1 LOU went 2-6 vs. PAW in 2014, 1-3 at McCoy Stadium. LOU is 83-78 all-time vs. the PawSox (first met in 1988), 35-42 at McCoy Stadium. LOU and PAW meet just seven times in 2015, all before the end of May, and the fewest since LOU joined the IL in 1998. LOU took three-of-four at LSF earlier this month. LOU last won a series at PAW in 2012, sweeping a four-game set. LOU needs one win to secure the season series. LOU s only baserunner came with one out in the top of the 8th inning when IF Eugenio Suárez lined a ball to left for a single to break up PAW s combined perfect game. Suárez moved to second on a wild pitch, but a strikeout and groundout ended the Bats only threat in the contest. PAW LHP Brian Johnson (W, 6-3, 2.60) tossed six perfect innings with 9k. RHP Miguel Celestino worked a perfect 1.1ip before allowing the single to Suárez, and being pulled in favor of RHP Heath Hembree (S, 6). Hembree earned his sixth save of the season working a perfect 1.2ip, with 1k, to secure the 1-0 PAW victory. RHP Josh Smith (L, 1-2, 3.81) allowed 1er on 6h and 2bb with 4k in his second loss of the season. RHP Sam LeCure worked a perfect 1.0ip in relief. PAW scored the only of the contest in the second inning, as they opened the frame with a walk and three straight singles. SS Devin Marrero capped the trio of singles with an RBI groundball single to left to score Allen Craig. ONE-HIT BLUNDER: LOU s one hit in last night s game was the lowest hit total of the season for the Bats. LOU had twice previously been held to two hits in a game (13-0 loss 4/9 vs. TOL and 1-0 win 4/14g1 vs. COL, 1-0). The last time LOU recorded one or fewer hits was on 7/30/14 when COL RHP Tyler Cloyd threw a no-hitter vs. LOU. IF Eugenio Suárez single in the 8th inning yesterday accounted for LOU s only baserunner of the game. TOUGH LUCK: RHP Josh Smith (L, 1-2, 3.81) is 1-1 against PAW this season, but has allowed just 2er on 10h and 3bb with 11k over 13.0ip in his two starts against them. Last night s start was his second straight start against PAW. Smith allowed just 1er on 4h with 1bb and 7k 5/23 vs. PAW. He is just the second LOU pitcher this season to take the loss in a game in which the LOU starter allowed just one run. Previously LHP David Holmberg, today s starter, suffered a 1-0 loss 4/14g2 vs. COL, allowing 1er on 3h and 2bb with 5k in 6.0ip. QUALITY TIME: RHP Josh Smith s outing last night was LOU s 20 th quality start of 2015. LOU is now 14-6 when getting a quality start, and Smith is now just the second LOU starting pitcher to take the loss in a quality start this season. The other was today s starter, LHP David Holmberg, who took the loss on 4/14g2 vs. COL in a 1-0 seven-inning game, allowing 1er on 3h and 2bb with 5k in 6.0ip. TWIN KILLINGS: LOU leads the IL with 61 DPs turned in 2015. Last night PAW grounded into three double plays, the third time PAW has done that in five games against LOU this season. LOU has turned three double plays in a game on nine occasions this season, five of which have come against IL North teams (PAW 5/21, 5/22 and 5/29; ROC 5/10 and 5/8). IF Eugenio Suárez leads all IL shortstops with 32 DPs, and RHP Dylan Axelrod leads all IL pitchers with 4 DPs. IF Ivan De Jesús is tied for the league-lead in DPs turned by third baseman (9), and C Ramon Cabrera is tied for the league-lead in DPs turned by catchers (3). All three of last night s DPs involved Suárez, De Jesús and IF Hernán Iribarren. CAN T WALK A MILE IN MY SOX: In the five meetings between LOU and PAW this season, PAW has issued just three free passes to the Bats. LOU walked just once in the 10-inning game on 5/21 and twice in the contest on 5/22. But PAW pitchers have not walked a LOU batter in three consecutive meetings, and have gone 26.0ip without walking a LOU batter. Two of the three walks PAW has issued to LOU have been to OF Steve Selsky and the other to IF Hernán Iribarren. WALK THIS WAY: LOU walked a season-high eight times in Wednesday s 10-2 win vs. TOL (previous high 7 at CHA on 5/14, 5-4 W). LOU pitchers issued just 1bb to TOL as well, marking the 15 th game of the season in which LOU batters walked more times than opposing batters. LOU is just 7-8 when drawing more walks than their opponents. BASE BROTHERS: Either IF Iván De Jesús or Eugenio Suárez has reached base in every game this season in which they have both played. The only games neither of them reached were 4/9 vs. TOL when Suárez went 0-for-4 and De Jesús did not appear and 5/2 at BUF when De Jesús went 0-for-4 and Suárez did not appear. Yesterday, De Jesús went 0-for-3 with 2k and Suárez went 1-for-3 with 1k and LOU s only hit of the game. Suárez is also currently riding an eight-game on-base streak, dating back to 5/21. He has recorded a hit in seven of those eight contests, and went 0-for-1 with 3bb and 2r Wednesday vs. TOL. HOMESTAND SWEET HOMESTAND: LOU s win on Monday was the seventh of the 10-gamehomestand. The last time LOU won seven games in a homestand was 5/26/11-6/4/11, when LOU also went 7-3 in a 10-game homestand. SERIES OUS BUSINESS: LOU s 10-2 win over TOL on Wednesday secured the Bats fourth straight series win. LOU s run of series wins began in GWN when the Bats swept the G-Braves from 5/15-5/17. LOU returned to LSF and went 2-1 vs. NOR, 5/18-5/20, and 3-1 vs. PAW, 5/21-5/24. LOU needs to win it s next two games at PAW to push the streak to five consecutive series. The last time LOU won five consecutive series was from 7/15/10-8/12/10 when they won seven consecutive series, going 24-3 in that span. STREAKING: Three LOU players had hitting streaks of four games or more snapped in yesterday s contest. IF Chris Dominguez was leading the way with a five-game streak, going 8-for-17 (.471) with 6r, 6rbi and 2hr. IF Hernán Iribarren and OF Yorman Rodríguez both had four-game streaks snapped, with Iribarren going 4-for-16 (.250) with 3r, 2rbi, 2 2b and 1 3b and Rodríguez going 7-for-17 (.412) with 4r, 4rbi, 1 2b, 1 3b and 1hr. RUN DIFFERENTIAL: LOU currently owns a -29 run differential, 4 th -worst in the IL (TOL is last at -60). LOU has the worst run differential of any IL team that is.500 or better, and is one of two teams in the IL with a record of.500 or better and a negative run differential (PAW with a -2 run differential). The Bats have not had a positive run differential at any point in the 2015 campaign. LOU was shutout 13-0 by TOL on Opening Night 4/9, but has reached a season-best -6 run differential twice this season, following the games on 4/16 and 4/18. LOU s worst run-differential in 2015 was -40, after LOU s 5-4 L at CHA on 5/13. Since then, LOU has gone 11-4 with a +11 run differential. PAWSOX AT A GLANCE: PAW (25-24) is third in the IL North, 2.0gb of division-leading ROC (27-22). LOU and PAW met in a four-game series at LSF from 5/21-5/24 with LOU taking 3-of-4 from PAW, outscoring them 22-16. PAW has the second worst AVG (.237) and OBP (.308) in the IL, and has struck out the second-most times (411). PAW s pitching has fared better, as the Red Sox staff has a 3.18era, the 5 th -best mark in the IL. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. leads PAW with a.339avg,.478slg and an.865ops. He is tied with OF Bryce Brentz for the team-lead in hits (39) and has struck out the fewest times (19) of any PAW player with 75 or more AB. Brentz leads PAW with 5hr and IF Travis Shaw leads PAW with 20rbi. Tonight s starter, LHP Henry Owens, has the second-lowest ERA of any PAW starter (2.98) and has given up the fewest hits of any PAW starter with five or more starts (30h). PAW also has three relievers who have appeared in 10 or more games with ERAs below 2.00 (RHP Heath Hembree [0.98era, 15g, 18.1ip], LHP Dana Eveland [1.61era, 15g, 22.1] and RHP Dalier Hinojosa [1.89era, 10g, 19.0ip]).

He went 6.2ip, allowed one run on five hits, walked one (season low) and struck out six (tying his season high). Free Falling: Since his ERA was a season-high 10.59 after his April 27 start it has now dropped to 5.13 over his last five appearances. He will look to allow one run or less for the sixth time this season in his start today. More Like It: Over his last five appearances, four starts, Holmberg has allowed just seven runs in 30.1ip, despite allowing 32 hits. He has stranded 71% of base runners this season. Home vs. Road: Opposing hitters are batting.271 against the southpaw at LSF, but are hitting.410 against him on the road. Holmberg has allowed 12er runs in 27.0ip at home, and 14er in 13.2ip on the road. Rough Outing: The 2.1 innings pitched on 4/21 at TOL was the fewest innings pitched for Holmberg since he pitched one-third of an inning on 4/13/2014, also against TOL. The 10 runs allowed were a career high for Holmberg. That surpassed his previous career high set in 2012 with the Visalia Rawhide when he allowed nine runs 5.1 innings against the High Desert Mavericks. 2014 Season Notes: Holmberg started the 2014 season 0-5 before getting his first win on July 28, his 14 th start of the season. His 4.66 ERA in 2014 was his highest since 2011, but Holmberg allowed just four homers last season, tying his career low.
