PRIME DISPATCH Edition 60 07/04/2015 Compiled by Joe o Neill Husson Eagle scores brilliant win at Caulfield running last 600m in 32.68 seconds Last Saturday was a day of real ups and downs. My first call on the mobile was Kris Lees to tell me Savoureux had caste herself and sustained a cut on the leg and would have to be treated and couldn t run in the PJ Bell Stakes at Randwick. I must say this took the wind out of my sails but I ve had this happen before and she will be fine to run in a couple of weeks. I headed to Caulfield full of optimism that Husson Eagle would do the job and return to the winner s list. When Steve Arnold spoke to me before the race he was concerned the track may have been leader biased but said he felt it best to ride the horse back with cover and keep him for one final crack at them. He didn t want to change the horse s pattern of racing and confuse him. I didn t expect the horse to be last after they straightened and giving some very smart three year olds eight lengths start. The turn of foot Husson Eagle displayed was wonderful and his closing sectionals were exceptional. Page 1
I left Caulfield a happy man and thrilled with the job Patrick Payne had done for us with the horse. Patrick s efforts with Husson eagle and Atalanta Miss have been first class and confirmed my decision to send him some athletic two year old types. For the past two years I have been selling the virtues of Husson as a sire to my clients. The win of our fellow follows the amazing finish Lucky Hussler displayed to win the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley 10 days ago. Husson has only had 190 runners in his five crops of racing age in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Husson is a remarkable sire. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS I felt sorry for the Committee and Staff of the Australian Turf Club when Saturday s meeting at Randwick had to be cancelled. An enormous amount of work goes into preparing for these meetings. I must say, the grand old lady she is raced in superb fashion on Monday given the drenching she had received over the previous week. I m looking forward to attending Saturday s meeting. It should be a lot of fun. Kris Lees deserves a special mention. He lines up 12 runners at Randwick on Saturday and some important ones at that. VISIT TO KILDALTON PARK HAWKESBURY I have arranged a visit to Tony McEvoy s training complex for this Sunday at 11am. His stables are at the rear of Hawkesbury racecourse at 121 Racecourse Road Clarenden and we should have Bridie s Brook, Lomazzo and Miss De Vega in work at Hawkesbury and available for inspection. I will be at the stables but have to leave at about 1230pm to head to the airport to catch a flight back to Melbourne. I m looking forward to catching up with our clients who can get to Hawkesbury. I m sure you will be impressed with Tony s facilities. ON THE TRACK Our runners this week include Go Arrivederci at Newcastle on Saturday, Annaman at Doomben and perhaps The Deestructor and Maraska at the Gold or Sunshine Coast depending on tracks!!! Page 2
YEARLINGS I have included information on the Hinchinbrook filly out of Velasco for David Hayes and Tom Dabernig as well as the Husson filly which will be trained for us by Tony Gollan. These are both beautiful fillies and passed our selection criteria. Hinchinbrook filly out of Velasco Hinchinbrook filly out of Velasco 2013 $9,000 per 10% share with $4,500 per 5% share David Hayes and Tom Dabernig to train at Lindsay Park Euroa The Filly Pictured above is a high class filly by Hinchinbrook out of the stakes winning Flying Spur mare Velasco which was Group 1 placed. Velasco has had three to race for as many winners including the Stakes winner Devoirs. I expect this filly will race as a two year old but that she will be a really good three years old as she develops. This female line is heading in the right direction with Velasco being the dam of the Anabaa mare, Reve de Victoire. Reve de Victoire is the dam of the Smart Missile filly I purchased at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale in January for Charlie Goggin and Leuella Meaburn to train. I am thrilled to have more exposure to the family and regard this Hinchinbrook filly as one of the very best buys at the Premier Sale. Page 3
This pedigree has a number of well-bred young mares at the top of the page with Devoirs first foal Edge away being placed 2nd at her only two starts including one behind the highly touted Darley colt Inner Circle (Street Cry out of Camarilla). Hinchinbrook I made a prediction before the start of this season that Hinchinbrook would be the best of the first season sires of his year. There were about 50 contenders and as I write this he is in 2 nd place and I am still hopeful he will finish on top as we move into the later part of the season. I have received good reports on Hinchinbrook s progeny from Kris Lees, David Hayes, Tony McEvoy and Tony Gollan. He was a top class juvenile winning the Group III AJC Skyline Stakes and Listed Canonbury Stakes before being the first colt home when fourth to Crystal Lily in the Group I STC Golden Slipper and was then third in the Group I AJC Sires Produce Stakes. He then trained on at three for Group I placings in the AJC All Aged Stakes, MRC Oakleigh Plate and MVRC William Reid Stakes, before being injured in the UK while preparing for Royal Ascot and retiring with earnings in excess of $590,000. He is a three-quarter brother to leading young sire Snitzel and Group III winner Viennese by champion sire Fastnet Rock from stakes-winning sprinter Snippets Lass. Snippet s Lass was the best mare trained by Bill Mitchell while I was with him and had one of the very best pedigrees in Australia. While she was only small in stature she was big on quality and had a heart as big as herself. Velasco Velasco is by the great broodmare sire Flying Spur out of the Listed placed mare Vital Curves out of another Listed stakes mare Career Girl. This is a great family and as I wrote earlier there are a lot of good mares in foal to the right stallions at the top of the pedigree page. I am pleased I am in a position to influence the future of this page by purchasing two good fillies from this highly promising family. As I have written many times in the past winning families tend to keep on getting winners. Velasco has been recently purchased by Yarraman Park Stud which is a strong pointer to how they view her and will continue to be well bred. The filly has been well received and I expect she will be quickly snapped up. Page 4
Husson filly out of Head Over Heels 2013 10% shares $11,900 (5% shares $5,950) The filly This is an outstanding type of filly representing one of the very best crosses in Australia at present. The filly vetted out without any issues and was highly regarded as a type by both Bill Mitchell and our vet Tim Roberts. I am thrilled to have secured her and look forward to her getting to the races. She is a cracker of a filly and looks a two year old type to me. Husson The filly is by Hussonet s best son at stud in Husson and is a product of one the most potent crosses in Australia today. When Hussonet and now his sons are put over Danehill line mares the results have been amazing. Danehill line mares mated with Husson have the stakes horses Hussousa, Affable, Will Be Amazed, Sister Souss, Peron, Hi Son, Star Of Husson and Little Miss Smily. There is also a filly Go Again which held the 900m record at Sandown out of a Danehill Dancer mare. Husson's sire Hussonet also has similar success with the Group 1 winners Reaan, Eagle Falls, Gold Trail and Group and stakes winners Colorado Claire, Miss Darcey, Step it Up, Karacatis, Latin News, Members Joy, Rose Of Peace, Werd, Hussy By Choice, Walk With Attitude, Dirty and Moonlight Hussler coming out of Danehill or his son's daughters. Page 5
It should be remember Hussonet came to Australia as a relatively old horse with his first crop of yearlings in Australia being born in 2004. His first crop in Chile were dropped in 1995. He is a super stallion and was brought to Australia by John Messara to be used as a suitable cross with the large number of Danehill line mares in this country. Once again Messara was right on the money!!! I have a very good filly with Tony Gollan named Hijack Hussy by Hussonet out of a Redoute's Choice mare. She won the Listed Lexus Plate at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day. The only other Hussonet filly I purchased was the stakes winner Huiskes. Head Over Heels Head Over Heels is by the great sire Fastnet Rock which has worked so well with Husson with three of his twelve winners to date from this cross of Husson over Fastnet Rock mares. This includes the stakes filly Little Miss Smiley. Head Over Heels brings a lot to the table here being a half-sister to the very good sprinter Presently as well as Another Time which was placed in the Black Opal Stakes. It is very early days for Fastnet Rock as a broodmare sire. It is hard to imagine Fastnet Rock not being a successful broodmare sire. Her half-sister Gifted Lass is the dam of the Group 2 placed Serena Miss. Head Over Heels is out of the Centaine mare Centaine s Gift. It doesn t get much better than this.
